Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Revenge

Six Months Later...The courtroom was packed. The media had dubbed it the "Collins Bloodline Trial," and it had captured the attention of the entire nation.

I sat in the front row, wearing a tailored black suit. I looked healthy, my physical wounds fully healed, though the scars on my abdomen would always remain—a badge of honor, a reminder of the night I fought to save my son.

On my lap sat Evan, now six months old, chubby-cheeked, laughing, and bursting with life. Next to me sat Noah, holding my hand tightly.

At the defense table sat Margaret, Daniel, and Claire.

They looked unrecognizable. Margaret's expensive blonde hair was streaked with gray, her designer clothes replaced by an orange jumpsuit. Claire sat beside her, a thick, ugly scar running down the side of her face from where the vase had struck her.

And Daniel... Daniel looked completely broken. He had spent the last six months begging for my forgiveness from his jail cell, sending letters that I burned without reading.

The judge banged his gavel.

"In the matter of the State versus Margaret Collins, Claire Collins, and Daniel Collins, the jury has reached a verdict."

I held my breath.

"On the charges of conspiracy to commit kidnapping, attempted murder of a minor, and first-degree murder of the infant known as Baby Doe... we find the defendant, Margaret Collins, GUILTY on all counts."

A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom. Margaret closed her eyes, her shoulders slumping.

"We find the defendant, Claire Collins, GUILTY of attempted murder, kidnapping, and assault with a deadly weapon."

Claire burst into hysterical tears, burying her face in her hands.

"And on the charges of child endangerment and conspiracy..." The judge looked directly at Daniel. "...we find the defendant, Daniel Collins, GUILTY."

Daniel looked over at me, his eyes pleading, tears streaming down his face. I didn't smile. I didn't cry. I just looked at him with absolute, cold indifference. He had chosen his mother’s toxic legacy over his own family. Now, he would pay the price with a fifteen-year prison sentence. Margaret and Claire would spend the rest of their lives behind bars without the possibility of parole.

As the bailiffs stepped forward to lead them away, Margaret suddenly turned around. She locked eyes with me one last time, her face twisting in bitter defeat.

"You think you won, Evelyn?" she spat, her voice echoing in the silent courtroom. "You’re still nothing! You’ll never be a Collins!"

I stood up, holding Evan tightly in one arm and placing my other hand on Noah's shoulder. I walked slowly toward the barrier, looking down at the woman who had tried to destroy my life.

"You're right, Margaret," I said, my voice calm, clear, and carrying to every corner of the room. "I’m not a Collins. And neither are my sons. Yesterday, the court legally changed their last names. They carry my name now. Your precious, sacred bloodline? It ends today. In an orange jumpsuit."

Margaret let out a strangled, breathless cry as the guards violently pulled her through the heavy metal doors.

I turned my back on them, walking out of the courtroom and into the bright, warm sunlight. For the first time in six months, I took a deep, free breath.

My bloodline wasn't weak. It was strong enough to survive them. And as I looked down at my two beautiful boys, I knew we were going to be just fine.
