CHAPTER 3 — THE FATHER SHE BURIED WALKED INTO HER HOSPITAL ROOM

CHAPTER 3 — THE FATHER SHE BURIED WALKED INTO HER HOSPITAL ROOM

"No..."

Valeria's voice was barely a whisper.

The pain from her burns disappeared beneath a wave of disbelief.

Her father couldn't be alive.

She had stood beside his coffin.

She had watched it lowered into the ground.

She had thrown the first white rose onto the polished wood while crying so hard she nearly collapsed.

She had mourned him for six years.

Yet the man standing only a few feet away looked exactly like Arturo Moreno.

The same silver hair.

The same piercing blue eyes.

The small scar above his left eyebrow from the motorcycle accident he had survived when Valeria was twelve.

Even the old leather watch he had worn every day for nearly thirty years remained on his wrist.

Her breathing became erratic.

"Dad...?"

The elderly man took one slow step toward her hospital bed before detectives stopped him.

"Sir, don't move."

He immediately raised both hands.

"I understand."

"My name is Arturo Moreno."

"I know how impossible this looks."

Socorro suddenly laughed.

A nervous, desperate laugh.

"This is insane."

"That man is an impostor."

"My husband attended Arturo Moreno's funeral himself."

Andrés didn't say a word.

His eyes remained locked on the old man.

His face had turned ghostly white.

The detectives noticed.

One leaned closer.

"You know him."

It wasn't a question.

It was an observation.

Andrés swallowed hard.

"I..."

Before he could answer, Arturo quietly spoke.

"Yes."

"He knows exactly who I am."

The room fell silent.

Dr. Renata stared at the old man in shock.

"Uncle Arturo..."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I thought you were dead."

Arturo lowered his head.

"So did almost everyone."

Valeria could no longer hold back.

"Why?"

"Why would you let me believe you died?"

The old man's eyes filled with regret.

"Because someone was trying to kill me."

Every person in the room froze.

Six years earlier...

Arturo Moreno had owned one of the fastest-growing logistics companies in central Mexico.

His company handled government contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Success brought wealth.

Wealth attracted enemies.

At first, the threats were anonymous.

Then came acts of sabotage.

Brake lines cut.

Warehouse fires.

Employees bribed.

Finally...

Someone tried to poison him during a business dinner.

"I survived."

"But I realized they wouldn't stop."

The detectives listened carefully.

"So you disappeared?"

Arturo nodded.

"I worked with federal authorities."

"They convinced me that faking my death was the only way to expose everyone involved."

Valeria stared at him through tears.

"You let me suffer."

"I know."

"I've regretted that every single day."

"But if anyone knew I was alive..."

"They would have killed you too."

Detective Herrera crossed his arms.

"If that's true..."

"...who wanted you dead?"

Arturo slowly turned toward Andrés.

The room became so quiet that everyone could hear the heart monitor.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

Andrés immediately shook his head.

"No..."

"Don't look at me."

Arturo's expression hardened.

"I didn't say your name."

"But you answered anyway."

Socorro stepped between them.

"My son had nothing to do with any of this."

Arturo opened another envelope.

"I hoped that was true."

"It wasn't."

Inside were photographs.

Old surveillance images.

Bank transfers.

Hotel receipts.

Phone records.

The first picture showed Andrés entering Arturo's corporate headquarters seven years earlier.

The second showed him leaving with two men federal investigators had identified as members of an organized financial fraud network.

The third picture made Valeria's blood run cold.

It showed Andrés kissing another woman.

Not casually.

Intimately.

The timestamp read:

Eight months before he met Valeria.

Valeria stared at the image.

"Who is she?"

Arturo answered quietly.

"Her name was Diana Vargas."

"She wasn't Andrés' girlfriend."

"She was his partner."

"In every sense."

Another detective examined the file.

"Financial crimes?"

Arturo nodded.

"They specialized in targeting wealthy single women."

The room fell silent.

"They studied them."

"Befriended them."

Earned their trust.

Married them.

Then slowly isolated them until every asset belonged to someone else.

Valeria felt sick.

"So..."

"My marriage..."

Arturo looked away.

"...was planned long before Andrés ever introduced himself to you."

Renata covered her mouth.

"My God..."

Arturo continued.

"When Andrés learned you were my only heir..."

"...you became the target."

Valeria's hands began shaking.

"So none of it was real?"

"The first coffee?"

"The proposal?"

"The honeymoon?"

"The promises?"

Arturo couldn't answer.

He didn't need to.

The silence answered for him.

For the first time since entering the room...

Andrés laughed.

It wasn't a normal laugh.

It sounded broken.

Almost relieved.

"You finally figured it out."

Everyone stared at him.

He slowly loosened his tie.

"You know what?"

"I'm tired."

"So yes."

"I chose Valeria."

"I studied her."

"I knew exactly what she wanted to hear."

"I became the perfect man."

Valeria felt her world collapse.

"I loved you."

"I know."

"I even enjoyed pretending."

The words sliced deeper than the burns covering her body.

Detective Herrera immediately stepped forward.

"You are under arrest for fraud, financial abuse, attempted obstruction of justice—"

Andrés interrupted him.

"You still don't understand."

His smile returned.

"It was never about the money."

The detective frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Andrés looked directly at Arturo.

"It was about something you hid."

Arturo's expression changed.

For the first time...

He looked afraid.

Andrés slowly reached into his jacket pocket.

Every detective instantly reached for their weapons.

"Don't move!"

Instead of a weapon...

He pulled out a tiny silver key.

Valeria frowned.

She recognized it immediately.

It looked exactly like the key hanging from a necklace her mother had worn every day until she died.

Andrés held it up.

"You've spent six years protecting your fortune."

"But your fortune isn't what everyone has been searching for."

Arturo whispered,

"No..."

Andrés smiled.

"Oh yes."

He turned toward Valeria.

"Ask your father about the second vault."

"The one hidden beneath your childhood home."

"The one that doesn't contain money."

Valeria stared at her father.

"Dad..."

"What is he talking about?"

Arturo slowly closed his eyes.

When he opened them again...

He looked twenty years older.

"There was never supposed to be a second vault."

Andrés laughed louder.

"But there is."

"And inside it..."

He pointed directly at Valeria.

"...is the truth about who you really are."

The room fell into complete silence.

Valeria's heart pounded so hard she thought the monitors would explode.

She looked from Andrés...

...to her father...

...and then to the mysterious silver key still dangling from Andrés' fingers.

Neither man denied it.

Neither man spoke.

Because both of them knew...

The greatest secret in the Moreno family had nothing to do with money.

May you like

And everything to do with Valeria's real identity.
