CHAPTER 5 — THE WOMAN AT THE DOOR HAD VALERIA'S FACE... BUT SHE CAME TO FINISH WHAT SOMEONE ELSE STARTED

Nobody moved.

The three knocks still echoed through the hospital room.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Detective Herrera slowly reached for his service weapon.

"Everyone stay where you are."

Outside the door, the woman's voice came again.

"I'm not armed."

"I'm here for Valeria."

"And if you don't let me in now..."

"...someone else will kill her before sunrise."

The room instantly filled with tension.

Herrera nodded to another detective.

"Open it."

Slowly."

The handle turned.

The door creaked open.

Every eye fixed on the hallway.

A young woman stepped inside.

For several long seconds...

No one breathed.

She looked almost exactly like Valeria.

The same dark eyes.

The same oval face.

The same small birthmark above her right eyebrow.

Even the way she held her shoulders was eerily familiar.

The only obvious difference was the long scar running across her left cheek.

Valeria stared at her in disbelief.

Tears welled in her eyes.

"...Isabella?"

The stranger didn't answer immediately.

She looked at Valeria's burns.

Then at the detectives.

Then at Arturo.

Finally, her eyes stopped on Andrés.

Hatred flashed across her face.

Pure.

Undeniable.

"You."

Andrés took an involuntary step backward.

"You should be dead."

The woman smiled bitterly.

"I've heard that before."

Arturo's knees nearly gave out.

"My God..."

"It really is you."

He tried to walk toward her.

She raised one hand.

"Don't."

"You lost the right to call yourself my father a long time ago."

His face collapsed with guilt.

"I searched for you."

"For twenty-six years."

"You searched too late."

Detective Herrera stepped between them.

"I need everyone to calm down."

He looked at the newcomer.

"State your name."

She hesitated.

"My legal name is Isabel Cruz."

"But I was born..."

She looked directly at Valeria.

"...Isabella Moreno."

Valeria began crying uncontrollably.

Her twin.

Alive.

Standing only a few feet away.

After twenty-six years.

She wanted to hug her.

Instead, she could only watch from the hospital bed.

Renata whispered,

"How did you find us?"

Isabella reached into her backpack.

She removed an old newspaper clipping.

It showed Arturo Moreno's funeral.

"I attended."

Everyone froze.

Arturo stared at her.

"You were there?"

"I stood behind the trees."

"I watched my own father bury an empty coffin."

"You saw me?"

"You never saw me."

Her voice carried no anger now.

Only exhaustion.

"I learned very young that invisible people survive longer."

Laura Castañeda frowned.

"Who raised you?"

Isabella slowly sat down.

"A man named Esteban Cruz."

"He wasn't my father."

"He bought me."

Silence swallowed the room.

"What do you mean?" Herrera asked.

"I mean exactly what I said."

"I was sold."

According to Isabella, the hospital fire twenty-six years earlier had been carefully planned.

During the chaos, several newborns disappeared.

Some were trafficked through an illegal adoption network.

Others...

Simply vanished.

She had been one of them.

Esteban Cruz eventually confessed everything while dying of liver cancer.

Before his death, he handed Isabella a locked metal box.

Inside were birth records...

Hospital bracelets...

Photographs...

And a list of names.

One name was circled in red.

Andrés Salazar.

Valeria looked at her husband in horror.

"How could your name be on documents from twenty-six years ago?"

Andrés remained silent.

Far too silent.

Isabella pulled another item from the box.

A faded photograph.

It showed four people standing outside an old maternity hospital.

Arturo recognized himself immediately.

Standing beside him was Valeria's late mother.

A young nurse smiled at the camera.

And next to her...

A teenage boy.

Maybe fifteen years old.

The room became eerily quiet.

Isabella handed the photo to Detective Herrera.

"Turn it over."

He did.

Written on the back were six handwritten words.

"Never trust the boy in blue."

Herrera flipped the photo over again.

The teenager wore a blue volunteer uniform.

He enlarged the image on his phone.

Then looked up at Andrés.

The resemblance was unmistakable.

Same jawline.

Same eyes.

Same crooked smile.

The detective frowned.

"Who is this?"

Arturo answered before Andrés could speak.

"I've seen him before."

"But that's impossible."

"Why?" Herrera asked.

Arturo's voice trembled.

"Because that boy..."

"...was Andrés's father."

Every head slowly turned toward Andrés.

His breathing became heavier.

His fists tightened.

Valeria whispered,

"You knew my family..."

"...before we ever met."

Andrés finally laughed.

A cold, defeated laugh.

"You still don't understand."

"No."

"My father didn't know your family."

"He owned your family's secrets."

The room fell silent.

Before anyone could question him further, a detective's radio crackled.

"Unit Seven to Detective Herrera."

"Go ahead."

"We've completed the emergency search of the Salazar residence."

Herrera listened carefully.

"What did you find?"

The officer's voice sounded shaken.

"Sir..."

"We found a hidden room behind the basement wall."

Everyone stared.

"What was inside?"

"A surveillance station."

"Dozens of hard drives."

"Hundreds of labeled video files."

Herrera frowned.

"Labeled how?"

The answer chilled everyone in the room.

"Each folder contains a woman's name."

He paused.

"There are at least eighteen different names."

Another pause.

"Every one of them appears to be a former wife... fiancée... or girlfriend connected to the Salazar family."

Valeria felt sick.

She wasn't the first.

She had never been the only target.

She was simply...

The latest.

The officer continued speaking through the radio.

"We also found something else."

Herrera closed his eyes.

"What now?"

"A wall covered with family photographs."

"Most have red X marks painted across the faces."

"And in the center..."

The officer hesitated.

"There is a picture of Mrs. Valeria Moreno."

"No X?"

Herrera asked.

The officer answered quietly.

"No, sir."

"Her photograph has today's date written underneath it."

"And one sentence."

Herrera's voice hardened.

"What sentence?"

The officer read it aloud.

'Final inheritance. Final victim.'

A wave of horror swept through the room.

Someone had planned Valeria's life for years.

Her marriage.

Her isolation.

The attack.

Perhaps even her death.

But before anyone could react—

Every light in the hospital suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the entire floor.

Emergency alarms began screaming through the building.

Red backup lights flickered weakly.

Then a terrified nurse shouted from the hallway—

"Someone just escaped custody!"

Detective Herrera grabbed his flashlight.

"Who escaped?"

The answer came through the darkness.

May you like

"...Andrés is gone."
