Chapter 6 - The Legal Storm
The next two weeks were a whirlwind of media attention, legal battles, and absolute chaos.
In their tight-knit Iztapalapa neighborhood, gossip spread like wildfire. Neighbors who had once looked down on Carmen for "abandoning" her family now watched in shock as police cars parked outside the house.
Leticia’s high-society facade crumbled instantly. Her wealthy ex-husband, upon learning of the criminal fraud charges, immediately filed for full emergency custody of Santi and Leo. He won. The boys were taken from the home in a tearful, chaotic scene that left Leticia screaming in the street, accusing Carmen of ruining her life.
Without her children to use as shields, Leticia was entirely vulnerable.
She was arrested and booked on charges of grand fraud and identity theft. Because the evidence of the bank transfers was undeniable, her lawyer advised her to plead guilty to avoid the maximum prison sentence of twelve years. She was currently awaiting sentencing, facing up to five years in a federal penitentiary.
Doña Rosa, due to her age and failing health, was not arrested, but she was named as a co-conspirator.
The shame was unbearable for the proud matriarch. She could no longer hold her head high in the neighborhood. Her friends stopped speaking to her, and the very church group she had used to boast about Leticia's "success" turned their backs on her.
Carmen, meanwhile, found an unexpected source of strength.
She did not back down. Despite the frantic, manipulative phone calls from distant relatives begging her to show mercy, Carmen remained resolute. She attended every court hearing, sat face-to-face with Leticia’s defense team, and refused to withdraw the charges.
"They didn't just steal my money, David," Carmen told her lawyer during a meeting. "They stole my youth. They stole my peace. They made me feel like I was a burden in my own father's house. I am not doing this out of revenge. I am doing this for justice."
"And justice is exactly what you're going to get," David assured her.
Through David’s aggressive negotiation, the bank agreed to freeze the foreclosure proceedings. Because Carmen had filed the police report and cooperated fully with the fraud investigation, the bank agreed to pursue Leticia’s seized assets—including her expensive car, her designer wardrobe, and her bank accounts—to recover the stolen funds, relieving Carmen of the bulk of the fraudulent debt.
