Chapter 8 - THE ULTIMATE CHECKMATEBefore Viktor’s mercenaries could even squeeze their triggers, the heavy iron doors at the back of the basement blew inward with the force of a battering ram.

Dozens of federal agents in full tactical gear—backed by the full force of the Kane Syndicate—flooded the room, their assault rifles locked and loaded.

“Federal Bureau of Investigation! Drop your weapons!” a voice boomed over a loudspeaker.

Viktor froze, his gold-plated revolver shaking in his hand as lasers from a dozen sniper rifles painted his chest in glowing red dots. He looked from the federal agents to Vincent Kane, whose expression remained as cold and emotionless as carved marble.

“You... you set me up,” Viktor whispered, his voice cracking with utter disbelief. “You lured me here.”

“I didn't have to lure you anywhere, Viktor,” Vincent replied, stepping forward until he was mere inches away from the terrified syndicate boss. “Greed always brings a cornered rat out of its hole. And you were foolish enough to think a four-year-old girl wouldn't notice the digital footprint attached to your explosives.”

Marcus stepped forward, placing heavy titanium handcuffs around Viktor’s wrists while two federal agents slammed him against the concrete pillar.

“Read him his rights,” Vincent instructed the lead federal agent, before turning back toward us.

The chaos in the basement slowly subsided as the federal agents escorted Viktor and his men away in chains. The flashing red and blue lights of dozens of police cruisers illuminated the rainy Chicago streets outside, signaling the end of an era for the Iron Cross.

My mother sank onto a chair, burying her face in her hands as the immense weight of the past seventy-seven days—and the harrowing events of the night—finally caught up with her. She wasn't crying tears of fear anymore; she was crying tears of absolute, profound relief.

Vincent walked over, kneeling down beside her. He gently placed a warm, reassuring hand on her shoulder.

“It’s over, Ms. Carter,” Vincent said softly. “You and Rory are safe. No one will ever threaten you again.”

My mother looked up, her eyes shining with gratitude. “Mr. Kane... I don't know how we can ever repay you. For the wages, for the restaurant, for saving our lives...”

Vincent smiled—a warm, genuine smile that completely transformed his terrifying underworld persona. He then looked down at me, tapping the cover of my red hoodie.

“Just make sure Rory keeps coloring inside the lines,” Vincent said gently. “Chicago needs more people who aren't afraid to keep score.”
