Inside my penthouse, the TV was off. Instead, the background noise was the soft clinking of Lego blocks and the low hum of a cartoon playing on the tablet.
Leo was sitting on the plush rug in the living room, carefully assembling a plastic spaceship with his one uninjured hand. His cast rested comfortably on a padded footstool. Maya was sitting cross-legged beside him, acting as the self-appointed chief inspector of the spacecraft.
I walked out of my private study holding a stack of legal documents and stopped at the edge of the rug.
“Captain Leo,” I said, lowering myself to one knee. “I have some paperwork for you to inspect.”
Leo looked up, his dark eyes wide with curiosity. “What kind of paperwork, Uncle Thomas?”
I handed him a single sheet bearing the official seal of the Travis County Family Court. “It means that as of ten minutes ago, a judge signed the permanent custody papers. You and Maya belong to me now. Legally, completely, and forever.”
Leo stared at the paper. A complex mixture of emotions crossed his young face—relief, disbelief, and finally, a profound sense of security. He dropped the Lego brick he was holding, threw his arms around my neck, and buried his face in my shoulder.
