Chapter 6 - Trial by FireThe courtroom of the Suffolk County Superior Court was packed to absolute capacity. Media vans lined Cambridge Street, satellite dishes pointed toward the stone steps, and every single seat inside the gallery was filled with reporters, legal experts, and curious onlookers eager to witness the fall of the Vance dynasty.

At the defense table sat David Vance—out of his custom suit, dressed in a standard orange inmate jumpsuit, his wrists still cuffed. His face was gaunt, his hair disheveled, and the arrogant smirk that had defined him was completely gone, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated terror.

Beside him sat Marcus Sterling, sweating profusely as he whispered frantic legal strategies to a team of junior associates.

Across the aisle sat Maya. She wore a sharp, crisp charcoal blazer, her hair tied back in a polished professional knot. Her posture was erect, her gaze calm and unwavering. Right beside her sat Elena, serving not just as a mother, but as a certified expert consultant to the prosecution team.

Judge Harrison, a notoriously strict and incorruptible jurist, banged his gavel once. The courtroom fell instantly silent.

“We are here for Case Number 8842: The Commonwealth versus David Vance, alongside related federal asset forfeiture motions,” Judge Harrison announced, his sharp eyes scanning the room. “Mr. Sterling, your motion to dismiss all charges on the grounds of ‘domestic privacy and mental instability of the plaintiff’ has been thoroughly reviewed. Do you care to present oral arguments?”

Marcus stood up, buttoning his jacket with trembling fingers. “Yes, Your Honor. The defense maintains that this entire proceeding is a malicious, coordinated conspiracy orchestrated by the defendant’s mother-in-law, Elena Brooks, to extort the Vance family and sabotage a legitimate corporate structure. The domestic incident at The Copper Lantern was nothing more than a private marital dispute blown entirely out of proportion by an unstable, disgruntled spouse.”

A collective murmur rippled through the gallery.

Judge Harrison held up a single hand, cutting the chatter off instantly. “Mr. Sterling, are you calling the sworn testimony of twelve eyewitnesses, the responding police officers, and the restaurant's security footage a conspiracy?”

“We submit that the footage has been manipulated, Your Honor,” Marcus argued desperately.

“Has it?” a smooth, cold voice rang out from the gallery.

Everyone turned. Standing near the back row was a federal prosecutor holding a secure drive. He walked down the center aisle, nodding respectfully to the judge.

“Your Honor, if I may submit Exhibit A into the permanent record,” the federal prosecutor said, stepping forward. “We have recovered deleted server logs, offshore transfer receipts, and recorded phone conversations from David Vance’s private office. They do not just prove domestic assault. They prove a multi-million-dollar wire fraud scheme executed using his wife’s forged identity without her knowledge.”

David turned pale as chalk, staring wildly at his own defense attorney. “Marcus... do something! Tell them it’s a lie!”

“Shut up, you fool,” Marcus hissed under his breath.

Judge Harrison reviewed the documents handed to him by the bailiff. As the judge read page after page, his expression grew darker and more severe.

“Mr. Sterling,” Judge Harrison said softly, his voice dropping an octave, sending a shiver through the courtroom. “Your client isn't just looking at aggravated assault charges anymore. We are looking at federal grand larceny, identity theft, and corporate fraud carrying a mandatory minimum of fifteen years in a federal penitentiary.”

The gavel came down with a thunderous crack that shook the entire courtroom.
