Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master's Trap

Grant fled. The arrogance that had carried him into the penthouse had completely evaporated, leaving behind a terrified boy who realized he had just picked a fight with a god of the digital age.
The glass doors of the study slid open, and Eleanor rushed out. She didn't stop until she was on her knees beside Nathaniel's chair, her arms throwing themselves around his neck. She was shaking, but this time, it wasn't from fear. It was from the sheer, overwhelming rush of liberation.
"He's gone," she whispered against his skin. "He's really gone."
"He's done," Nathaniel corrected, his arms holding her tightly. "His family will be tied up in federal indictments for a decade. Their liquidity is gone. They can't touch you, your father, or the gallery."
For a few minutes, they stayed like that, holding onto each other in the quiet penthouse. But just as the tension began to drain from Eleanor's shoulders, the elevator pinged again.
This time, it wasn't an enemy. It was Harold Whitman, Eleanor’s father.
He stepped out of the elevator looking disheveled, his suit wrinkled, his eyes frantic. He didn't look like a man whose company had just been saved from a predatory shark. He looked like a man who had just realized his execution date had been moved up.
"Father?" Eleanor said, standing up and wiping her face. "Did you hear? Nathaniel stopped them! The Harlans are being investigated by the feds. We're safe!"
Harold didn't look at his daughter. He looked directly at Nathaniel, his lips trembling. "Nathaniel... what did you do with the forensic AI? Did you... did you look at all the routing numbers in the Harlan database?"
Nathaniel’s expression hardened, the warmth leaving his eyes in an instant. "I looked at all of them, Harold."
Eleanor looked between the two men, a sudden, cold dread settling in her stomach. "What's going on? Father, what is he talking about?"
Nathaniel turned his chair to face Harold completely. "Tell her, Harold. Or should I?"
"Please, Nathaniel," Harold begged, dropping to his knees right there by the elevator. "I did it to save the company years ago. I didn't know what they were going to do with it!"
"Tell me what?!" Eleanor screamed, her voice echoing off the glass walls.
Nathaniel looked at Eleanor, his eyes filled with a profound, solemn sorrow. "Five years ago, Eleanor. I was in an accident on an icy road outside Boston. A delivery truck crossed the median and crushed my car. The truck belonged to a logistics firm that was secretly owned by a joint venture between your father and the Harlans."
Eleanor felt the room tilt. "No... no, that was a tragic accident. It was weather-related."
"It wasn't an accident," Nathaniel said, his voice flat and precise. "The truck’s brakes had been deliberately sabotaged. The Harlans wanted to eliminate me because CrossEdge was about to launch a automated logistics platform that would have made their entire shipping empire obsolete. They used your father's company to lease the vehicle and hire the driver, framing it as a tragic corporate mishap."
Eleanor staggered backward, her back hitting the sofa. She stared at her father, who was weeping silently on the floor, his face buried in his hands.
"Father..." she whispered, her voice hollow. "You... you helped them paralyze him?"
"I didn't know!" Harold cried. "Grant told me they were just going to steal his source code! They told me they were just going to stage a minor accident to keep him out of the board meeting for a few weeks! I didn't know they were going to crush him! After it happened, Grant used that secret to blackmail me. He said if I didn't give him you, if I didn't let him integrate our companies, he would send the maintenance logs to the police and put me away for attempted murder!"

The revelation hung in the air like a poisonous smog. Eleanor looked at Nathaniel, the man she had married out of duty, the man who had just spent millions to protect her.
"You knew," she breathed, her heart breaking all over again. "You knew before you married me. You married the daughter of the man who took your legs."
