Chapter 5 - The Gathering of Shadows

The protective custody wing, known as Block S, was where the prison kept high-profile informants, corrupt politicians, and former law enforcement officers. It was supposed to be the safest place in the state.
Marcus Vance, the former District Attorney, sat in his extra-large cell, watching a portable television. He was a fat, arrogant man who still wore silk pajamas inside his cell, courtesy of his brother, the Warden.
The television screen suddenly flickered and died. The lights in his cell went completely black.
"Hey!" Marcus shouted, standing up and banging on his desk. "Vance! Tell the guards the power's out! Get the generator on!"
No one answered.
Then, the electronic lock on his cell door clicked. The heavy steel door slid open with a slow, agonizing hiss.
Marcus smiled. "Ah, Arthur. Finally fixing it."
He stepped out into the dark corridor, expecting to see his brother or a guard with a flashlight. Instead, he saw a single figure standing under the emergency exit sign. The red glow cast long, demonic shadows across the man's face.
It was Roman Calder. And behind him stood Deacon Briggs and three of the largest inmates from Block C. They weren't attacking Roman. They were standing behind him like a private army, their faces grim, holding heavy iron pipes and makeshift shivs.
"Who... who are you?" Marcus stammered, backing up until his spine hit the concrete wall of his cell. "Guards! Guard!"
"They aren't coming, Marcus," Roman said, walking forward slowly, his boots clicking rhythmically against the floor. "The Warden gave them the night off. He felt it was important for us to have a private conversation about family values."
Marcus’s eyes widened as the red light caught Roman’s face clearly. The blood drained from the former DA's cheeks. "No... no, it can't be. You're dead. The Calderone family... the house fire..."
"My wife died in that fire, Marcus. My seven-year-old son suffocated in the closet because your corrupt cops locked the doors from the outside," Roman said. His voice was completely devoid of emotion, a terrifyingly flat monotone that was scarier than any scream. "You took everything I had, and then you hid behind a badge, and then you hid inside this prison."
"I was just following orders!" Marcus screamed, falling to his knees, tears streaming down his face. "The syndicate was getting too powerful! The politicians wanted you gone! It wasn't my idea!"
Roman stopped a foot away from the kneeling man. He looked down at him with utter disgust.

"I know it wasn't your idea," Roman said softly. "You don't have the brains for it. Which is why I needed you to open the final door for me."
Roman turned to Deacon. "Tie him up. We're going to the Warden's office."
