Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Twist

Nina awoke to the sharp, bitter smell of ozone and old dust.

She was tied securely to a heavy iron chair in what looked like an abandoned underground subway terminal. The cold was back, biting through her silk gown, making her teeth chatter violently. Cold light flickered from a single halogen bulb hanging from the ceiling.

"Ah, she's awake," a raspy, familiar voice echoed through the damp concrete room.

Nina blinked, forcing her vision to focus.

Standing in front of her, wrapped in a luxurious, fur-lined black coat, was the old man from the bench. Mikhail Kovac. Gone was the trembling, fragile posture. He stood tall, straight-backed, his eyes gleaming with a terrifying, razor-sharp intelligence. Beside him stood his brother, Viktor.

They weren't enemies. They were standing side-by-side.

"You... you lied," Nina breathed, her voice hoarse. "Viktor didn't overthrow you. You were working together."

Mikhail let out a dry, rattling laugh. "Of course we were, child. The 'coup' five years ago was a brilliant orchestration to fool the federal government and Dante Ricci's father, who was closing in on our assets. I needed to disappear, and Viktor needed to take the reins publicly."

"But the ledger..." Nina stammered.

"The ledger your father took was a fake," Viktor sneered, stepping forward. "Your father was a clever man, Nina. He discovered our little ruse twenty-five years ago. He created a real ledger—one that contained the actual routing numbers to the billions we hid from the Ricci family. And he hid it in that pathetic, eighteen-dollar coat he bought you."

Mikhail walked over, holding up the familiar navy peacoat. With a wicked smile, he drew a silver blade and sliced open the inner lining. A thick, tightly bound packet of encrypted micro-ledgers and documents fell onto the concrete floor.

"I knew your father passed it to you," Mikhail chuckled, stroking the fabric of the coat. "I waited on that bench for days, knowing you walked that route. I knew your pathetic, weak heart wouldn't be able to ignore a freezing old man. You handed me the keys to our kingdom, Nina. Voluntarily."

"And now," Viktor said, pulling a gun from his jacket and aiming it directly between her eyes, "you and the Ricci empire die together."

"I wouldn't be so sure about that," a calm, lethal voice echoed from the shadows of the tunnel.

Before the Kovac brothers could react, the concrete walls seemed to explode. Dante Ricci stormed into the room, flanked by a dozen heavily armed tactical security guards. A deafening volley of gunfire erupted.

Viktor swung his gun toward Dante, but Nina, utilizing every ounce of strength she had left, threw her weight sideways, tilting the iron chair and slamming it into Viktor’s knees. The shot went wide, shattering the halogen bulb above.

In the chaotic darkness, muzzle flashes illuminated the room like lightning. Nina fell to the floor, her heart hammering as concrete dust rained down on her.

Suddenly, a pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around her, lifting her easily from the floor. Dante.

"I've got you," he roared over the gunfire, shielding her body with his own as he carried her back into the safety of the tunnel.

When the lights finally came back on, the Kovac syndicate lay ruined. Viktor was disarmed and pinned to the ground by Silas, while Mikhail sat slumped against the wall, realization dawning on his old face that his empire was truly gone.

Dante knelt in front of Nina, slicing through the ropes binding her wrists. His hands were shaking—not from the cold, but from pure terror at the thought of losing her. He pulled her tightly against his chest, burying his face in her dark hair.

"You're safe," he whispered fiercely. "It's over."

Nina hugged him back, but as her eyes drifted to the floor, she noticed the dropped micro-ledgers. A sudden, brilliant realization struck her. She pulled back from Dante, a breathy laugh escaping her lips.

"Dante... look at the documents," she whispered.

Dante picked up the encrypted files, his eyes scanning the decrypted data on his portable scanner. His jaw dropped.

The files didn't just contain the Kovac assets. They contained a legal, ironclad deed of trust established by Thomas Walsh twenty-five years ago. Her father hadn't just stolen the ledger to hide it; he had legally transferred the ownership of the entire Kovac corporate shell to a blind trust under one sole beneficiary: Nina Walsh.

The Kovac brothers hadn't been running their empire for the past five years. Technically, legally, through her father's brilliant accounting maneuver, Nina Walsh owned everything. She was the rightful owner of the multibillion-dollar conglomerate.

Dante looked up from the screen, a brilliant, genuinely amazed smile spreading across his handsome face.

"Well, Ms. Walsh," Dante murmured, his grey eyes burning with an intense, undeniable warmth as he wrapped his luxurious charcoal coat around her shivering shoulders once again. "It looks like I'm no longer the only billionaire in this room. What do you say we go take care of your father's medical bills—and then we run this city together?"

Nina smiled, leaning into his warmth, the cold completely forgotten. "I think that’s a favor I’m finally ready to accept."
