Chapter 7 - The Mastermind UnmaskedThree days after Christmas, I sat in the glass-walled conference room of Evelyn Cross, Attorney at Law, overlooking the glittering skyline of the city.

Across from me sat Marcus Vance, the forensic accountant who had quietly dismantled Ryan’s entire life.

“The freeze on all joint assets is absolute,” Marcus said, sliding a thick leather-bound dossier across the mahogany table. “Every offshore transfer Ryan attempted to make over the last twelve months has been flagged and intercepted. His personal bank accounts have been zeroed out to cover legal fees and restitution.”

“And Tiffany?” I asked, sipping my black coffee.

Marcus smirked, leaning back in his chair. “Oh, Tiffany packed her designer bags and checked out of her downtown apartment forty minutes after the news broke. She told police she had no idea Ryan was married—though our text message recovery logs show she was the one coaching him on how to pressure you for your father’s money.”

“Poetic,” I murmured, flipping open the dossier.

Inside were the final settlement papers for our impending divorce. Because of the irrefutable evidence of financial fraud, forgery, and domestic abuse captured on camera, the pre-nup amendments Ryan had forced me to sign under psychological duress were declared null and void by a federal judge.

Not only was I walking away with every single asset I had brought into the marriage, but Ryan’s personal assets—including his vintage sports car and his share of his mother’s secondary home—were slated to be seized to pay back legal fees and damages.

My phone buzzed on the table. It wasn't a call or a text. It was a prison-collect call notification.

I looked at the screen, watched the caller ID flash “County Detention Center - Inmate #48921,” and calmly pressed the red decline button.

I didn't need to hear what he had to say. The three seconds of fear I had felt on Christmas Eve were gone forever, replaced by an absolute, unshakeable peace.
