Chapter 2 - "YOU CHOSE A LOUSE OVER A QUEEN" — THE MASK SLIPS

The study became a pressure cooker.

Roman looked from Gabriel to the folder. Slowly, he picked it up. Inside were bank routing numbers, a transcribed confession, and a certified employment record from the architectural firm where Ethan Cole worked.

Attached to the very front was a forensic digital analysis of the photographs Vanessa had provided. The red circles highlighted where the metadata had been altered. The dates had been shifted by exactly seven months to align with Elena’s conception timeline.

Roman’s breath caught in his throat. His eyes scanned the financial ledger.

"What is this?" Roman’s voice was barely a whisper, but it carried the weight of a death sentence.

Vanessa’s face drained of color. She took a half-step backward, her eyes darting toward the door, but Gabriel had already shifted his posture, blocking her only exit.

"It’s a frame-up, Roman!" Vanessa cried out, her voice losing its elite composure, rising to a frantic pitch. "Gabriel has always hated me! He’s trying to protect Elena because he’s loyal to her family’s old guard! You can’t believe this garbage!"

"The driver's real name is Owen Pike," Gabriel said, his voice cutting through her panic like a scalpel. "He was on your personal payroll when you managed the logistics for the logistics firm in Connecticut three years ago. I have his signed confession, and I have the wire transfers from your offshore account. Elena never met Ethan Cole alone. The 'secret meetings' were public arbitrations regarding her mother's estate. You altered the timestamps, Vanessa."

Roman stared at the paper. The world around him seemed to slow down, spinning on a dangerous, violent axis. Every memory of the last six months flashed before his eyes—Elena crying alone in the kitchen, Elena assembling a crib with swollen hands, Elena looking at him with absolute pity across the dining table.

“She brought you permission to believe the worst thing about me.”

"Roman, listen to me—" Vanessa reached out to touch his arm, but Roman moved with a speed that startled even Gabriel.

He slammed his hand onto the desk, shattering the crystal bourbon glass into a hundred glittering shards. Vanessa screamed, flinching back as blood began to seep from a shallow cut on Roman’s palm. He didn't even feel it.

"Get out," Roman said. The tone wasn't loud. It was the low, vibrating growl of a predator that had realized it had been caged by its own stupidity.

"Roman, please! I did it for us! She wasn't right for you! She didn't understand the business—"

"Gabriel," Roman barked, his eyes burning with a terrifying, unhinged rage. "Take her out of my sight. Strip her of everything. Every account, every property, every car tied to this family. If she is seen within fifty miles of Westchester by tomorrow morning... bury her."

Vanessa began to sob as Gabriel grabbed her upper arm with an iron grip, dragging her out of the room. Her emerald dress tore against the door frame, a fitting end to the facade she had spent a year building.

Left alone in the massive study, Roman sank into his chair. He looked at his bleeding hand—the same hand he had placed on Elena's stomach.

"What have I done?" he whispered into the empty room.

He grabbed his phone, his fingers trembling as he dialed Elena's old number.

“The number you have dialed is no longer in service.”

He dialed her attorney. The call went through on the fourth ring.

"Where is she?" Roman demanded without greeting.

A long, exhausted sigh came from the other end of the line. "Mr. DeLuca. Your divorce was finalized. Elena waived the alimony. She took nothing from you."

"Where is my wife, Arthur?!" Roman roared.

May you like

"She isn't your wife anymore, Roman," the attorney said quietly. "And you're too late. She gave birth three days ago. You have a son. And if I were you, I would stay as far away from Maryland as humanly possible."

The line went dead.
