Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Payback

“True justice doesn’t come from a gavel. It comes from taking everything they used to look down on you with.”One month later.
The media circus had moved on to newer scandals, but the corporate landscape of New York had changed forever. West Holdings had been restructured into Bennett-West Global.
Ava stood on the private terrace above Central Park—the exact same spot where Nathaniel had proposed to her fourteen months ago with that arrogant, glittering diamond.
The wind blew her hair across her face, but she didn't look back. She looked forward.
The divorce had been finalized in a closed-door, lightning-fast settlement. To avoid prison time for corporate manslaughter and fraud, Nathaniel had signed over his remaining personal assets, including the full rights to the green-energy infrastructure, to Ava. He had been banished from his own empire, left with nothing but a ruined reputation and enough debt to keep him in legal hiding for the rest of his life.
The Ohio lithium project was now fully underway, but not as an environmental disaster. Ava had transformed it into a community-owned cooperative, ensuring that every family in her hometown received a piece of the wealth her father had died protecting.
A soft footstep sounded behind her.
Ava didn't turn around. “You’re late, Lauren.”
“I was signing the final asset transfer paperwork,” Lauren said, walking out onto the terrace with two glasses of cheap Ohio apple cider—a middle finger to the champagne culture they had left behind.
Lauren handed Ava a glass. “It’s official. You are officially the majority owner of the largest clean energy resource on the continent. How does it feel to be America’s most eligible architect of wealth?”
Ava smiled, a genuine, warm smile that reached her eyes for the first time in years. She took a sip of the cider.
“It feels like my father was right,” Ava said, looking up at the sky. She reached into her pocket and touched the cold metal of the old voice recorder. “People lie beautifully. But the truth... the truth pays the ultimate price.”
Suddenly, Ava’s phone buzzed in her pocket. It was an restricted number.
She answered it, placing it to her ear.
“Ava,” Nathaniel’s voice whispered through the line. He sounded broken, desperate, speaking from some cheap apartment in an undisclosed city. “You think you’ve won. You think you took everything. But you forgot one thing.”
Ava’s eyes narrowed. “What’s that, Nathaniel?”
“I wasn't the only one who wanted that lithium,” Nathaniel hissed, a chilling, insane laugh bubbling through the phone. “I was just the only one who tried to marry you for it. The people I borrowed the initial acquisition capital from... they don't do pre-nups. And now that you own the company... you own my debt to them. Good luck surviving the board meeting next week, wife.”
The line went dead.
Ava slowly lowered the phone. She looked out over the glittering, predatory lights of Manhattan. The war wasn't over. A new, more dangerous enemy was coming out of the shadows.
But as she looked down at the city, Ava didn't feel fear. She felt ready.

She turned to Lauren, her eyes burning with a dangerous, viral intensity.
“Get the paperwork ready, Lauren,” Ava said softly, a dark smile playing on her lips. “We’re going to need a bigger courtroom.”
