CHAPTER 1 — "The Sunset Betrayal"

Emily Carter had always believed sunsets were promises.

As the golden light spilled across the endless ocean, she stood barefoot on the deck of the luxurious yacht, one hand gently resting on her seven-month pregnant belly while the other held a glass of sparkling water. The sea was calm, the sky painted with shades of orange and crimson. It should have been the happiest day of her life.

Her husband, Ryan Carter, had rented the entire yacht to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary.

Or so she thought.

Ryan wrapped an arm around her shoulders and smiled for the crew.

"Smile, sweetheart," he whispered. "Let's make this a memory we'll never forget."

Emily laughed softly.

"I already know this is the best day of my life."

Ryan forced a smile.

"Mine too..." he muttered under his breath.

She didn't hear him.

Emily had built Ryan's empire from nothing.

Five years earlier, he had been drowning in debt, rejected by every investor in New York. While everyone else called his business idea impossible, Emily believed in him.

She mortgaged the tiny apartment she inherited from her grandmother.

She worked two jobs.

She sold her jewelry.

She sacrificed everything.

Ryan became a billionaire.

Emily became invisible.

Over the last year, something had changed.

Ryan no longer kissed her goodbye.

He always kept his phone upside down.

Late-night meetings became weekend business trips.

Every excuse sounded rehearsed.

But whenever Emily questioned him, he would gently touch her pregnant stomach and say,

"Everything I'm doing is for our baby."

She wanted to believe him.

Love often makes intelligent people ignore obvious lies.

The yacht slowly drifted farther from shore.

No other boats.

No witnesses.

Only endless blue water.

Ryan glanced toward the captain.

The captain gave him an almost invisible nod.

Emily noticed it.

"Did something happen?" she asked.

Ryan smiled too quickly.

"Nothing. I just told him to stop near the cliffs. I thought we'd watch the sunset together."

She relaxed.

How romantic.

Or so she believed.

Minutes later, another speedboat quietly approached from the opposite side of the yacht.

Emily frowned.

"I thought we rented the yacht privately."

Ryan didn't answer.

A glamorous blonde woman climbed aboard wearing oversized sunglasses and a designer dress that fluttered in the sea breeze.

She walked straight toward Ryan.

Without hesitation...

She kissed him.

Passionately.

Emily's smile disappeared.

The world stopped spinning.

"...Ryan?"

The blonde laughed.

"So... this is the wife?"

Ryan stepped away from Emily as if she were a complete stranger.

"It's over."

Emily blinked.

"What are you talking about?"

"I'm filing for divorce."

Emily stared at him in disbelief.

"I'm carrying your child!"

Ryan shrugged.

"You'll never raise that baby."

Her blood ran cold.

The blonde crossed her arms with a cruel smile.

"Did you tell her?"

Ryan slowly removed his wedding ring.

"The insurance policy."

Emily felt her knees weaken.

Insurance?

"What insurance?"

Ryan smiled.

"The fifty-million-dollar life insurance policy... that names me as the only beneficiary."

Emily's heart nearly stopped.

"No..."

"Oh yes."

The blonde giggled.

"And accidents happen on the ocean every day."

Emily instinctively backed away.

"You can't be serious..."

Ryan took one step closer.

Then another.

"You always believed love was forever."

His voice became terrifyingly calm.

"But money lasts much longer."

Emily clutched her stomach.

"Our baby..."

Ryan looked directly into her eyes.

"I only ever wanted the money."

He shoved her.

Hard.

Emily screamed as her body crashed through the yacht's railing.

The freezing ocean swallowed her whole.

Above the waves, Ryan watched without emotion.

The crew remained silent.

The blonde wrapped her arms around him.

"It's finally over."

But beneath the surface...

Emily wasn't fighting the water.

She was reaching into the hidden pocket sewn inside her maternity dress.

Her trembling fingers pulled out a tiny waterproof recorder.

Before the darkness closed in...

She pressed one button.

And whispered just six words—

"Dad... release everything if I die."

Then she disappeared into the endless black sea.

Ryan smiled.

Certain no one would ever hear those final words.

He had absolutely no idea...

May you like

...that someone had already been listening.
