CHAPTER 4 — "One Year Later… Ryan Saw the Daughter He Tried to Kill"

One year passed.
Ryan Carter was no longer the billionaire the world envied.
He was Prisoner #48217.
The expensive suits were gone.
The private jets were gone.
The people who once called him "sir" wouldn't even answer his letters.
Every morning began the same way—steel doors slamming shut and guards shouting orders.
But every night ended with the same nightmare.
Emily's voice.
"Dad... release everything if I die."
He heard it over and over until he couldn't sleep anymore.
Prison had taken everything from him.
Except his guilt.
On a rainy October morning, Ryan was unexpectedly escorted out of his cell.
Two federal marshals placed him into a transport van.
He frowned.
"Where are we going?"
No one answered.
Thirty minutes later, the van stopped outside a courthouse.
Ryan's heart pounded.
Another hearing?
Another lawsuit?
As the courtroom doors opened, he froze.
Emily was there.
She looked healthier than ever.
Her confidence filled the room before she even spoke.
And standing beside her...
...was a little girl with bright hazel eyes and soft brown hair.
She couldn't have been more than one year old.
She was laughing.
Holding a tiny stuffed rabbit.
Ryan's breath caught in his throat.
"My... daughter?"
The little girl looked at him with innocent curiosity.
She had no idea who he was.
Emily gently lifted the child into her arms.
"This is Grace."
Ryan's eyes filled with tears.
"I've dreamed about meeting her every day."
Emily remained silent.
The judge entered.
The hearing began.
Ryan assumed it was about his prison sentence.
He couldn't have been more wrong.
Emily's attorney stood.
"Your Honor, Mrs. Carter requests the court terminate all parental rights of Ryan Carter."
Ryan shot to his feet.
"What?"
"You can't do that!"
"She's my daughter!"
Emily finally spoke.
"No."
"You were her biological father."
"But the day you pushed us into the ocean..."
"...you chose money over your own child."
The courtroom fell silent.
Ryan collapsed back into his chair.
Emily continued calmly.
"You didn't lose Grace because of this hearing."
"You lost her the moment you decided her life was worth fifty million dollars."
The judge reviewed the evidence.
The confession.
The attempted murder.
The insurance fraud.
The conspiracy.
Every page made Ryan's future darker.
After several minutes, the judge looked directly at him.
"Mr. Carter..."
"The court finds that maintaining your parental rights would not be in the best interests of the child."
The gavel struck.
"Petition granted."
Ryan closed his eyes.
It was over.
Forever.
As the marshals prepared to take him away, little Grace suddenly reached out her tiny hand.
Ryan instinctively smiled.
For one heartbreaking second, he thought she wanted him.
Instead...
She handed him her stuffed rabbit.
The old toy slipped from her fingers and landed at his feet.
Ryan picked it up with trembling hands.
There was a small embroidered message on one ear.
"Love protects. Greed destroys."
Tears streamed down his face.
Emily smiled sadly.
"She'll never remember you."
"But she'll always know why she was saved."
Ryan slowly handed the rabbit back.
"I don't deserve her..."
Emily nodded.
"No."
"You never did."
The prison van doors slammed shut behind him.
Ryan watched through the tiny window as Emily walked away with Grace in her arms.
Mother and daughter disappeared into the sunlight...
...without ever looking back.
For the first time in his life, Ryan understood that prison wasn't the walls around him.
It was living every day knowing the family he betrayed would spend the rest of their lives happy...
May you like
Without him.
