Chapter 3 - THE VAULT OF SECRETSThe subterranean parking level smelled of stagnant exhaust fumes, damp concrete, and old oil. Unlike the sterile, bright upper floors of the hospital, this level was a labyrinth of shadows, illuminated only by dim, flickering fluorescent tubes that buzzed like angry hornets.

Preston was shoved forward by one of the silent security guards, stumbling over a concrete parking stop before catching himself against the cold metal door of a black armored SUV. Marcus, the CFO, was dragged along behind them, whimpering softly with every step, his spirit entirely broken.

"Where are we going?" Preston choked out, wiping a bead of cold sweat from his forehead. His designer jacket was wrinkled, stained with the humiliation of his descent from corporate royalty to captive. "You can't just abduct people! This is kidnapping! This is—"

"This is a private audit," Raymond interrupted, stepping out of the elevator behind them with unhurried grace. He didn't look the least bit tired, his bespoke charcoal suit still immaculate despite the grim surroundings. "You utilized the hospital’s sub-basement data center to route your illegal transactions, Preston. Did you really think we wouldn't check the physical infrastructure after finding the digital breadcrumbs?"

Emily walked past her uncle, tapping a command onto her encrypted tablet. With a heavy, pneumatic hiss, a reinforced steel door marked ‘AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY—ARCHIVES & RECORDS’ slid open, revealing a pitch-black corridor beyond.

"In here," Emily commanded, her voice ringing with an authority that left no room for argument.

They were forced down a narrow, windowless hallway lined with rows of vintage filing cabinets and obsolete server racks that hummed with a low, ominous frequency. At the very end of the corridor was a heavy walk-in vault door, its digital keypad glowing with a faint blue light.

"Marcus," Raymond said, his voice cutting through the hum of the servers like a razor. He gestured toward the vault keypad. "Be a good accountant and open your master safe."

Marcus looked up, horror etched into every line of his face. "I... I can't! That's the cold storage for the clinical trial black-ledger! If I open that, everything—every single illegal acquisition, every bribe paid to the board members, every falsified patient trial result—it all uploads automatically to the federal prosecutors' secure drop!"

"Precisely," Raymond replied, his dark eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "You have exactly five seconds to enter the sequence, Marcus, or my men will help you type it using your fingers one by one."

Marcus let out a strangled sob. Trembling violently, he punched a twelve-digit code into the keypad, followed by a biometric retinal scan that required him to press his bloodshot eye against the scanner glass.

With a deep, metallic groan, the heavy vault door swung outward, releasing a gust of refrigerated air that smelled faintly of ozone and old paper.

Preston stared into the dark interior of the vault, his breath catching in his throat. Inside, illuminated by a single overhead bulb, sat rows of physical paper files—the hard copies he had ordered Marcus to print out "just in case the digital cloud ever failed." The ultimate insurance policy had become the ultimate noose.

"You kept paper copies," Raymond murmured, stepping into the vault and running a gloved hand along the spine of a thick black binder labeled Project Genesis: Asset Stripping & Patient Displacement. "Greed is truly a predictable flaw, Preston. You trusted computers to steal millions, but you trusted paper to keep your secrets safe from each other."

Preston lunged forward in a sudden, desperate surge of adrenaline, aiming for the open door. "You won't get away with this! I'll destroy—"

Before he could take two steps, a heavy hand clamped onto his shoulder, spinning him around and slamming him flat against the cold steel exterior of the vault. The air rushed out of Preston’s lungs in a violent gasp as a pair of cold, metallic handcuffs snapped tightly around his wrists.
