Chapter 5 - THE COLLATERAL DAMAGEThe flashbulbs of the paparazzi waiting outside the hospital emergency entrance cut through the predawn darkness like lightning bolts, strobing violently against the tinted windows of the black armored SUV as it sped away from the curb.

Inside the vehicle, the leather seats were silent, save for the rhythmic clicking of Emily’s tablet as she scrolled through a cascading waterfall of financial forfeiture documents.
Raymond sat in the opposite corner, his long legs crossed, his fingers steepled thoughtfully beneath his chin. He stared out the window at the receding skyline of the city, where the first pale streaks of dawn were beginning to bleed through the smog.
"It’s done," Emily murmured, her voice sounding suddenly hollow, the adrenaline crash finally catching up to her. She let the tablet rest on her lap, rubbing her eyes with the heels of her palms. "The board has already issued an emergency stabilization statement. The pediatric oncology endowment fund has been fully restored, and Preston’s assets are locked in receivership pending criminal trial."
"Good," Raymond said without turning his head. "A hospital is a sanctuary, Emily. The moment we allow predators to treat human life as a ledger entry, we lose the very thing that separates us from the animals."
Emily looked up at her uncle, the flickering amber streetlights casting shifting shadows across his aged, granite-hard face. For all his ruthlessness, for all the terrifying efficiency with which he had dismantled Preston’s multi-million-dollar empire in a matter of hours, there was a profound, quiet exhaustion in his dark eyes.
"You knew about Preston months ago, didn't you?" Emily asked softly, the realization dawning on her with sudden clarity. "When we first noticed the discrepancies in the research funding... you didn't tell me because you were already watching him."
Raymond slowly turned his head, his gaze meeting hers with absolute transparency. "If I had stepped in too early, Preston would have hidden his assets behind complex offshore trusts that would have taken years to unspool in civil court. I needed him to reach high enough to build a noose strong enough to hang himself with."
Emily shivered, pulling her wool coat tighter around her shoulders. Sometimes, having a dynasty backing you was a terrifying privilege. "And Marcus?"
"Marcus will spend the next ten years singing like a canary in a federal penitentiary," Raymond replied dismissively. "He’ll receive a reduced sentence in exchange for testifying against every single board member who took a bribe to look the other way."
Emily nodded slowly, watching the city blur past them. The immediate crisis was over, the tumor excised from the hospital's leadership with surgical precision. But as she looked back down at her tablet, a secondary alert caught her eye—an encrypted data packet flagged with a high-priority security tag originating from an unknown Swiss server.
She frowned, tapping the notification to expand it.
"Uncle Raymond," Emily said, her voice dropping an octave as she read the first lines of the decrypted text. "You might want to see this. The offshore accounts we froze... they didn't belong to Preston."

Raymond stopped tapping his fingers against his knee. He slowly turned around, his dark eyes narrowing. "Explain."
"The funds didn't originate from Preston's shell companies," Emily said, her heart beginning to hammer against her ribs once more as she read the cryptographic trail. "The ultimate beneficiary listed on the parent holding corporation isn't Preston, and it isn't Marcus. It’s registered to an internal holding entity... controlled by the Saint Claire family trust."
