CHAPTER 4 — "She Can't Stay Alive." The Phone Call Daniel Was Never Supposed to Hear

The black SUV disappeared into the rain before Daniel ever looked toward the street.

He never knew someone had been watching.

Not yet.

His attention remained fixed on the faded photograph trembling in his hands.

His mother's warm smile.

A teenage Emma in an oversized pirate hat.

Twenty children standing shoulder to shoulder outside St. Agnes Children's Home.

And four words that refused to leave his mind.

"Daniel will lose everything."

Lose what?

His company?

His inheritance?

His family?

None of it made sense.

Emma stood quietly beside him, regretting she had spoken at all.

"I shouldn't have said anything."

Daniel looked up.

"Why?"

"Because I don't know the whole story."

"But you know something."

She nodded slowly.

"Only pieces."

Daniel slipped the photograph carefully into his jacket pocket.

"Then we'll find the rest."

Emma's face changed instantly.

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

Too firmly.

Daniel frowned.

"No?"

"You don't understand."

"Help me understand."

Emma shook her head.

"I promised."

"To who?"

Silence.

Daniel waited.

Finally she whispered,

"Your mother."

Fifteen years earlier...

Emma had been a frightened ten-year-old girl living at St. Agnes.

Every Christmas, one elegant woman visited without cameras, reporters, or security.

The children simply called her...

Mrs. Eleanor.

She never arrived carrying expensive toys.

Instead, she remembered names.

Birthdays.

Favorite books.

Dreams.

When Emma once admitted she wanted to become a teacher but couldn't even afford notebooks...

Mrs. Eleanor returned the next week with blank journals.

Inside each one she had written the same sentence.

"Your beginning does not decide your ending."

Emma still owned that notebook.

She had carried it through foster homes...

College...

Every difficult year of her life.

It remained hidden inside a small wooden box beneath her bed at Harrison Manor.

Daniel didn't know any of this.

That evening...

The mansion felt strangely quiet.

Lily had fallen asleep early after an emotional day.

She still wore the cardboard pirate crown on top of her nightstand.

Daniel stood alone inside his father's old study.

The room had barely changed in twenty years.

Dark oak shelves.

Leather chairs.

A fireplace no one used anymore.

Family records filled dozens of cabinets.

If his mother had secretly supported the orphanage...

There had to be evidence.

Receipts.

Letters.

Photographs.

Anything.

He searched for nearly two hours.

Nothing.

Until...

His fingers caught on a false panel inside the bottom drawer of his father's desk.

Click.

A hidden compartment slid open.

Inside rested a single sealed envelope.

Cream-colored.

Yellow with age.

Across the front...

Written in his mother's handwriting.

For Daniel.

His heartbeat accelerated.

He carefully opened it.

Inside was only one page.

No explanation.

No signature.

Just one sentence.

If you're reading this... I wasn't able to protect her anymore.

Daniel read it again.

Protect who?

The page ended there.

Nothing else.

No names.

No clues.

No answers.

Only more questions.

Across town...

The black SUV entered the underground garage of an old office building.

The gray-haired man stepped out carrying a leather briefcase.

Inside the top-floor office, another man waited by the window.

"You saw them?"

"I did."

"Did she remember?"

The older man nodded.

"Enough."

The second man poured himself a drink.

"I warned Eleanor this day would come."

The first man looked uneasy.

"What if Daniel starts asking questions?"

"He already has."

Silence filled the office.

Finally...

The man by the window smiled.

Coldly.

"Then Emma Walker becomes a problem."

The next morning...

Emma woke before sunrise.

She couldn't sleep.

Something felt wrong.

Not because of Daniel.

Because of the photograph.

She hadn't seen it in almost fifteen years.

She had believed it disappeared forever after St. Agnes closed unexpectedly.

How had it ended up inside Harrison Manor?

She quietly walked downstairs toward the kitchen.

Halfway down the hallway...

She noticed the security monitor in the control room.

One of the outside cameras flashed briefly.

Then turned black.

A second later...

It came back.

Emma frowned.

Probably the rain.

She kept walking.

She never noticed the figure standing beyond the front gate.

Watching.

Waiting.

At breakfast...

Lily happily spread strawberry jam onto toast.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"Can Captain Crumbcake come again?"

Daniel smiled for the first time in days.

"I think Captain Crumbcake lives here."

Emma laughed softly.

"I've been promoted."

Lily giggled.

"Forever?"

Daniel looked toward Emma.

For a brief moment...

Neither spoke.

Finally he answered.

"I hope so."

Emma lowered her eyes.

She wasn't sure that would still be possible.

Late that afternoon...

Daniel left for an emergency board meeting.

Before leaving, he stopped beside Emma.

"When I get back..."

He touched the envelope inside his coat.

"...I'd like to hear everything you remember."

Emma nodded.

"I'll tell you."

Neither of them knew...

Someone else had already decided she never would.

Three hours later...

The mansion telephone rang.

Emma answered.

"Harrison residence."

For several seconds...

Only silence.

Then a distorted male voice whispered,

"Stay away from Daniel Harrison."

Emma's smile disappeared.

"Who is this?"

"You survived once."

A pause.

"You won't survive twice."

Click.

The line went dead.

Emma stood frozen.

Her hands trembled so violently the receiver slipped from her fingers.

How could a stranger know...

About the fire?

About the night that nearly killed her when she was eleven?

She had never told anyone at Harrison Manor.

Not Daniel.

Not Lily.

Not even herself in years.

Someone knew.

Someone had been watching her long before she ever became Lily's nanny.

At that exact moment...

Daniel's meeting ended early.

His phone vibrated.

Security Alert.

Front Gate Forced Open.

His blood ran cold.

He immediately called the house.

No answer.

He called Emma.

Straight to voicemail.

He slammed his laptop shut.

"Cancel everything."

His assistant looked confused.

"Sir?"

Daniel was already running.

"If anything happens to them..."

He didn't finish the sentence.

He didn't need to.

Outside...

His car sped toward Harrison Manor faster than it ever had before.

Miles away...

A masked figure quietly climbed over the mansion's rear garden wall.

Hidden beneath a dark coat...

Was a silver lighter engraved with two elegant initials.

E.H.

The same initials...

As Daniel's late mother.

And as Emma tucked Lily into bed upstairs...

Neither of them smelled the faint scent of gasoline drifting through the downstairs hallway.

May you like

The nightmare...

Had already entered the house.
