CHAPTER 5 — The Mansion Was Set on Fire... But the Little Girl Said One Name That Made the Attacker Freeze

The smell reached Lily first.

She wrinkled her tiny nose.

"Emma..."

Emma looked up from the bedtime story she had been reading.

"What is it, sweetheart?"

"It smells funny."

Emma paused.

She sniffed the air.

At first...

Nothing.

Then...

A sharp chemical odor drifted beneath the bedroom door.

Gasoline.

Her entire body went rigid.

Years disappeared in an instant.

She wasn't twenty-nine anymore.

She was eleven.

Standing inside a burning dormitory at St. Agnes Children's Home.

Children screaming.

Smoke filling the hallway.

Someone pounding on locked doors.

The memory hit so violently that her hands began to shake.

Not again...

Please...

Not again.

She stood and opened the bedroom door only a few inches.

A wave of smoke rolled into the room.

Emma slammed it shut immediately.

Her heart nearly stopped.

"Stay away from the door!"

Lily stared at her.

"Emma?"

Emma forced herself to smile.

Everything inside her screamed to panic.

She couldn't.

Not in front of Lily.

She knelt until they were eye to eye.

"I need you to do exactly what I say."

Lily nodded immediately.

"Is this a game?"

Emma gently held her face.

"No."

"This is real."

Downstairs...

Orange flames began swallowing the curtains in the west hallway.

The fire spread unnaturally fast.

Almost as if someone had planned every inch.

The mansion's fire alarms exploded into life.

Sprinklers activated.

But the flames continued racing across the polished wooden floor.

Outside...

A hooded figure stood beyond the garden hedge.

Watching.

Waiting.

Waiting for one thing.

Emma not to come out.

Daniel's black Mercedes tore through the rain.

His phone remained pressed against his ear.

"Answer..."

Voicemail.

Again.

He slammed the steering wheel.

"Come on..."

The security company finally answered.

"Mr. Harrison, emergency services are on the way."

"I'm three minutes out."

"There appears to be a fire—"

"I know there's a fire!"

He ended the call before they finished.

For the first time in years...

The billionaire who controlled billion-dollar negotiations could do absolutely nothing.

Except drive.

Inside the bedroom...

Smoke thickened quickly.

Emma searched desperately.

The hallway was impossible.

The staircase was already burning.

The nearest window overlooked the rear garden.

Nearly twenty feet above the ground.

Too high to jump with a child.

Think.

Think.

Think.

Then she remembered.

The old linen closet.

Years ago, the architect had hidden an emergency escape ladder behind it.

Daniel had shown it to her during her first week.

"Hopefully you'll never need this."

She needed it now.

Emma rushed to the closet.

Pulled aside the shelves.

There.

A red emergency box.

Still sealed.

She ripped it open with trembling hands.

The compact ladder dropped into her arms.

"Good."

Lily whispered,

"Are we going to fly?"

Emma smiled through tears.

"Something like that."

Outside...

Neighbors gathered behind the security gates.

Someone screamed.

"The little girl is still inside!"

Fire engines roared into the driveway.

Firefighters rushed toward the mansion.

The heat was already unbearable.

One commander shouted,

"The west wing is fully involved!"

Another yelled,

"We're missing two occupants!"

Daniel arrived seconds later.

His tires barely stopped before he jumped from the car.

He looked up.

The second floor was burning.

"LILY!"

Firefighters grabbed him instantly.

"You can't go in!"

"My daughter is inside!"

"So is her nanny!"

Daniel fought like a desperate animal.

"LET ME GO!"

Three firefighters struggled to hold him back.

The mansion behind them exploded with shattered glass.

Heat blasted across the lawn.

Everyone instinctively stepped backward.

Everyone...

Except Daniel.

His eyes never left Lily's bedroom window.

Inside...

Emma secured the escape ladder.

She tested it once.

Solid.

She turned toward Lily.

"I'll go first."

Lily shook her head.

"No."

Emma blinked.

"I want to hold your hand."

Emma's heart broke.

"You will."

She wrapped Lily securely against her with a safety strap kept inside the emergency kit.

"Ready?"

Lily buried her face against Emma's shoulder.

"I'm scared."

"So am I."

Emma whispered.

"But brave people can still be scared."

They climbed.

Slowly.

Smoke surrounded them.

The ladder swayed in the wind.

Below...

Firefighters spotted them.

"There!"

"Second-floor window!"

"They're coming down!"

Hope exploded across the front lawn.

Daniel looked up.

His knees nearly gave way.

"Lily..."

Halfway down...

A loud crack echoed through the air.

The burning window frame collapsed.

Flaming debris crashed directly toward Emma.

She twisted instinctively.

Taking the impact herself.

The burning wood slammed across her shoulder.

The ladder swung violently.

Emma cried out in pain.

One hand slipped.

For one horrifying second...

Both of them dangled above the flames.

Then...

Something unexpected happened.

The hooded figure watching from the hedge quietly stepped closer.

Close enough to see Lily's terrified face.

Close enough to hear her cry.

She wasn't screaming for help.

She was crying one word.

"Grandpa..."

The attacker froze.

Every muscle locked.

Grandpa?

Slowly...

The hooded figure lowered his head.

Lily's tear-filled eyes met his through the smoke.

"I know you..."

she whispered.

"You came with Grandma."

The lighter slipped from the stranger's hand.

It landed in the wet grass.

He took one slow step backward.

Another.

His breathing became uneven.

"No..."

he whispered.

"No..."

Within seconds...

He disappeared into the trees before anyone noticed him.

Emma finally reached the ground.

Firefighters rushed forward.

Daniel ran faster.

He dropped to his knees.

Pulled Lily into his arms.

She sobbed against his chest.

"Daddy..."

"I'm here."

"I'm sorry."

"I thought..."

Daniel couldn't speak.

He simply held her tighter.

Then he looked toward Emma.

She had collapsed beside the ladder.

Barely conscious.

Her shoulder badly burned.

Blood stained her sleeve.

Daniel crawled to her side.

"Emma!"

She opened her eyes weakly.

"Lily..."

"She's safe."

Emma smiled.

"Good."

Then everything went black.

Paramedics loaded Emma into the ambulance.

Daniel climbed in without hesitation.

One medic stopped him.

"Family only."

Daniel looked directly into the man's eyes.

"She is family."

No one argued.

Hours later...

The fire was finally under control.

Investigators searched through the ruins.

One firefighter approached the lead detective carrying something wrapped in a cloth.

"You should see this."

Inside the bundle...

Was a half-burned leather journal.

The cover was badly damaged.

But one name remained perfectly readable.

Eleanor Harrison.

Daniel's late mother's diary.

The detective carefully opened the first surviving page.

Most of the writing had burned away.

Only one sentence remained untouched by the flames.

It read:

"If anything happens to me... Daniel must never discover who Emma Walker really is."

The detective slowly looked toward the ambulance disappearing into the night.

"What..."

he whispered,

"...does that mean?"

Hundreds of feet away...

Emma lay unconscious.

She had no idea...

The one secret Eleanor Harrison had protected for nearly twenty years...

Had survived the fire.

May you like

And someone else...

Would kill to make sure the rest of that diary was never read.
