Chapter 1 - The Forbidden DoseThe sterile air of Massachusetts General Hospital smelled of ozone and fading hope.

Robert Blackwood marched through the VIP corridors, his polished leather shoes striking the linoleum like gunfire. Beside him walked Grace Walker, her hands tucked deep into the pockets of a worn trench coat, and twelve-year-old Lily, whose small hand held a scratched metal thermos as if it contained the secret to the universe.

"You're out of your mind, Robert," Dr. Harrison barked, intercepting them outside Ethan's room. Two hospital security guards stood behind him, their heavy boots planted wide. "You cannot bring an unlicensed civilian—and a child—into an ICU! If you administer anything to Ethan, I will have you removed and stripped of your guardianship!"

"I pay for this entire floor, Harrison," Robert said, his voice dropping into the icy register that usually made board members hand over their stock options. "I bought the machines keeping my son alive. Try to touch me, and I will tear down this hospital before the sun sets."

"Look at her!" Harrison gestured wildly toward Lily. "She’s a child! Her mother is a disgraced former researcher who was fired from your own firm four years ago! Did she fail to mention that?"

Robert paused. He turned his heavy gaze to Grace Walker.

Grace didn't flinch. "I wasn't fired, Dr. Harrison. I resigned when Blackwood Biotech ordered me to destroy the raw data from Clinical Trial 409. The trial where Lily was patient zero."

"That's enough!" Harrison snapped, reaching for his radio. "Security—"

Before Harrison could finish, Lily stepped past the guards. She didn't look at the doctors or the security team. She slipped past the door frame, walked up to Ethan’s bed, and unclipped the thermos.

"Lily, wait!" Grace cried, but the girl was already moving with terrifying precision.

Inside the bed lay Ethan. His skin was translucent, blue veins showing like fractures beneath marble. The monitors hummed a slow, agonizing drumbeat: 42 beats per minute.

Lily opened the thermos. A dark, pungent liquid—smelling faintly of bitter almonds and damp soil—steamed in the cold air. She dipped her fingers into it and smeared a thick streak across Ethan’s throat, right over his carotid artery, before anyone could react.

"Stop her!" Harrison screamed, bursting into the room.

The guards grabbed Grace. Harrison tackled Robert back against the glass partition.

"Ethan!" Diana screamed from the armchair, dropping her book as nurses rushed in with syringes.

Then, the heart monitor went completely crazy.

BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP!

The flatline alarm shrieked. Ethan’s chest heaved once, violently, arching off the mattress like a landed fish. His eyes rolled into the back of his head, his fingers clawing at the sheets.

"He's going into cardiac arrest!" Harrison yelled, grabbing the defibrillator paddles. "You killed him! You let this crazy woman kill your son!"

Robert broke free from the guard's grip, horror washing over him. "Lily! What did you do?!"

Lily stood beside the convulsing boy, unbothered by the chaos around her. She looked straight into Robert’s eyes, her voice completely calm amid the sirens.

"I didn't kill him," Lily whispered. "I woke up his cure."

Suddenly, Ethan’s eyes snapped open—bright, clear, and focused. He seized his father’s coat sleeve with a grip that turned Robert’s knuckles white.

"Dad..." Ethan gasped, his voice raspy, but undeniable. "They're... lying to you."
