Chapter 9 - THE FINAL BETRAYALThe silence in the grand foyer was absolute. The gentle sound of my children playing outside on the lawn felt like a distant memory from another lifetime.

Julian Vance-Smith smiled, his eyes cold and devoid of any familial warmth. He adjusted his platinum cufflinks with his left hand, looking entirely comfortable in a house where he had just pulled off the ultimate corporate coup.
“I must hand it to you, Valerie,” Julian said, his voice smooth as silk. “When Ryan and his clumsy uncle tried to bash down your front door with their amateur forgery schemes, we almost felt bad for them. They were such wonderfully useful idiots.”
Mr. Sterling didn't move. He stood calmly beside me, his hands resting quietly at his sides.
“You sold the encryption keys to Arthur Hayes in 2004,” Mr. Sterling stated, his voice devoid of surprise. “You helped the Hayes family orchestrate the entire infiltration from inside the board.”
“Of course I did,” Julian laughed softly, taking another step closer. “My father spent forty years acting like a loyal dog to old man Arthur Vance, while our branch of the family was treated like second-class citizens in our own company. When your grandfather left thirty million to you—a part-time graphic designer who knew nothing about global shipping—I knew it was time to collect what was rightfully ours.”
Julian gestured with the silenced pistol toward the sub-basement doors.
“The international patent portfolio is already transferring to an offshore entity under my control. All I need is your biometric thumbprint on the final master override console downstairs, Valerie, and the Vance empire officially belongs to the Vance-Smiths.”
I looked at Julian, feeling a cold fury unlike anything I had ever experienced. Ryan was a pathetic pawn; Camille was a desperate opportunist. But Julian—Julian was a cold-blooded viper who had hidden behind a corporate smile for decades.
“You’ll never get away with this,” I said, stepping slightly in front of Mr. Sterling. “The federal investigators are already monitoring the estate's security feeds.”
Julian chuckled, shaking his head. “Valerie, sweet, naive Valerie. Do you really think I didn't disable the external transmission relays before I walked through those front doors? The security feed you think is broadcasting to Detective Vance is currently looping a thirty-minute pre-recorded loop of an empty hallway.”
My heart skipped a beat. For a fraction of a second, panic threatened to paralyze me.
Were my children in danger? Was anyone coming to help?
Julian raised the pistol higher, aiming directly at my heart. “Now, walk toward the sub-basement elevator. Don't try anything stupid, or the next sound you hear won't be a warning.”
I looked down at the marble floor, calculating every possible angle, every escape route, and every hidden panic button within reach.
Then, a faint, metallic click echoed from the shadows behind the grand staircase.
Julian didn't hear it. His eyes were locked on me, high on the intoxication of absolute power.

“Move,” Julian commanded, taking a step forward.
Suddenly, the heavy oak front doors exploded inward with a deafening crash.
