Chapter 6 - The Trap SpringsMarco pulled the trigger.

Click.

An empty chamber.

Marco’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. He stared at the gun, frantically pulling the slide back, but no round ejected.

“Looking for your bullets, brother?” a cold voice echoed from the shadows behind the study doors.

Captain Vance, head of Alessandro’s elite internal security, stepped into the room, holding a magazine full of hollow-point rounds that he had covertly extracted from Marco’s holster during the morning briefing.

Marco spun around, lunging toward Vance, but he never made it.

Before Marco could take two steps, Alessandro crossed the room with blinding speed. He grabbed Marco by the throat, slamming him against the heavy oak bookshelves with enough force to shatter wood and send cascading volumes crashing to the floor.

Marco choked, clawing at Alessandro’s iron grip, his face turning purple.

“You thought you were the only one playing chess, Marco?” Alessandro whispered in his ear, his knuckles whitening. “You thought I spent three years mourning without asking questions? I was just waiting for the right piece to fall into place.”
