Chapter 4 - The Voice in the Dark"Leave my daddy alone!"

Marcus whipped his head around toward the stairs. Standing at the threshold of the basement door, clutching her gray stuffed rabbit in one hand and holding a heavy iron fireplace poker in the other, was Sophie.

Her eyes weren't swollen anymore. They were burning with a fierce, unnatural defiance.

"You little brat," Marcus hissed, his polished demeanor cracking instantly. "How did you get out of the living room?"

Sophie didn't answer him. Instead, she looked past Marcus, locking eyes with David in the dim light.

"Dad... I found Mommy's phone on the kitchen counter when she went to the bathroom," Sophie said, her voice shaking but clear. "I called Uncle Tom. He’s outside."

David’s heart leaped into his throat. Tom?

Tom Henderson was David’s younger brother—and a fiercely dedicated homicide detective with the Chicago Police Department, who happened to be visiting family in the suburbs this weekend.

"You what?!" Marcus shrieked, his face losing all its color. He lunged toward the stairs, abandoning David entirely. "Give me that phone, you little—"

Before Marcus could take two steps toward the stairs, Sophie let out a fierce battle cry, hoisted the heavy iron fireplace poker over her small shoulder, and hurled it down the steps with every ounce of strength she had left.

The heavy iron bar caught Marcus squarely across the shin with a sickening CRACK.

Marcus let out a shriek of absolute agony, stumbling backward and crashing hard into a stack of old storage bins, sending plastic tubs and broken lamps clattering across the concrete floor.

"NOW, TOM! BREAK THE DOOR DOWN!" Sophie screamed at the top of her lungs.

BOOM!

The heavy wooden basement door didn't just open—it exploded inward off its iron hinges, splintering into a thousand pieces as a massive figure charged through the smoke and darkness.

Detective Tom Henderson burst into the basement, his service weapon drawn, his badge gleaming in the dim light, his face twisted into a mask of pure, unbridled familial rage.

"FBI AND CPD! NOBODY F***ING MOVE!" Tom roared, scanning the room in a single, hyper-trained sweep.

His eyes locked onto Marcus groaning on the floor, then to David tied to the pillar, and finally up to little Sophie standing triumphantly at the top of the stairs.

"Uncle Tom," Sophie whispered, her tough exterior finally melting as two fat tears spilled down her cheeks. "He hurt Daddy. And Mommy hurt me."

Tom's eyes flicked back to David, and the look in his brother's eyes told him everything he needed to know.

"Stay right there, sweetie," Tom commanded, his voice dropping an octave as he marched across the basement and kicked Marcus's twitching hand away from a hidden pocket knife. "You're safe now."

Tom holstered his weapon for a fraction of a second, pulled out his tactical combat knife, and sliced through the zip-ties binding David to the pillar with two swift, brutal strokes.

David collapsed forward, catching himself on his hands and knees. The moment the circulation rushed back into his arms, he scrambled to his feet, ignoring the burning pain in his wrists, and sprinted up the stairs.

He swept past Tom, rushed up the threshold, and burst into the kitchen.

Elena was standing by the back patio door, her car keys in one hand, a packed duffel bag by her feet, ready to bolt into the night.

When she saw David standing in the doorway—free, bruised, and radiating pure wrath—her face went completely white.
