CHAPTER 2 — The Video No One Was Supposed to See

Diego's hands trembled as he stared at the tiny USB drive resting in his palm.
It weighed almost nothing.
Yet somehow it felt heavier than his entire world.
Across the street, Doña Elvira wiped tears from her wrinkled face and looked toward Renata's house as though she expected the front door to burst open at any second.
"Don't watch it here," she whispered. "Please... just take Lucía somewhere safe first."
Diego nodded.
Without another word, he climbed into the driver's seat.
As soon as the engine started, Lucía reached forward from the back seat and softly touched his shoulder.
"Daddy..."
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Are you mad at me?"
The question broke something inside him.
He turned around immediately.
"Never."
"But Mommy said families fall apart because children tell lies."
Diego unbuckled his seatbelt, climbed into the back, and hugged his daughter as gently as he could.
"No, Lucía."
"Families fall apart when adults choose to lie."
"For the first time, we're going to tell the truth."
A Doctor's Silence
Forty minutes later, they arrived at a children's emergency clinic on the other side of Guadalajara.
Diego intentionally avoided the private hospital near their neighborhood.
He didn't want anyone recognizing Renata.
He wanted independent medical records.
Dr. Isabel Moreno examined Lucía with extraordinary patience.
She never rushed.
She never raised her voice.
Instead, she asked Diego to wait outside for a few minutes while she spoke privately with the little girl.
The hallway seemed endless.
Every passing second felt like an hour.
When the examination room door finally opened, the doctor's expression was completely different.
Professional.
Calm.
But deeply concerned.
"Mr. Santillán..."
"We've documented the injuries."
Diego's throat tightened.
"Injuries?"
She nodded slowly.
"The bruise on her lower back is recent."
She hesitated.
"But..."
"There are several older bruises in different stages of healing."
Diego felt the blood drain from his face.
"So..."
"This has happened before."
"I'm afraid that's what the medical evidence suggests."
For a long moment neither of them spoke.
Finally, Dr. Moreno placed a folder on the desk.
"I also asked Lucía how she usually gets hurt."
"And?"
The doctor's voice became softer.
"She didn't describe accidents."
"She described rules."
The Rules
When Diego entered the room, Lucía looked frightened.
"I wasn't supposed to tell."
"You don't have to hide anymore."
She looked at Dr. Moreno, who gave her an encouraging smile.
Very quietly, Lucía began counting on her fingers.
"Rule number one..."
"Don't cry loudly."
"Rule number two..."
"Never tell Daddy."
"Rule number three..."
"If someone asks, always say I fell."
She stopped.
Then whispered,
"Rule number four..."
"If Mommy smiles..."
"...everyone will believe her."
Diego covered his face.
He had spent years believing exactly that.
Renata was elegant.
Educated.
Charming.
Everyone loved her.
Neighbors admired her.
Friends called her generous.
Social media showed birthday parties, vacations, and perfect family photographs.
Behind every smiling picture...
His daughter had been living by rules no child should ever know.
The Hidden Footage
After leaving the hospital, Diego checked into a small hotel rather than returning home.
He locked every door.
Closed every curtain.
Only then did he insert the USB drive into his laptop.
There were dozens of video files.
Different dates.
Different times.
The oldest recording was almost six months earlier.
His heartbeat accelerated.
He clicked Play.
The image showed part of Doña Elvira's backyard.
Only a corner of Diego's patio was visible.
At first...
Nothing happened.
Then Renata appeared.
She was dragging a frightened Lucía across the patio by the wrist.
The little girl wasn't resisting.
She simply stumbled, trying to keep up.
There was no audio.
But the security camera captured everything clearly.
Renata pointed toward the garden hose.
Lucía shook her head.
Renata pointed again.
The child slowly picked up the hose and began washing the patio.
Minutes later...
Lucía accidentally sprayed water onto one of Renata's flower pots.
Renata spun around.
Even without sound...
The anger on her face was unmistakable.
She grabbed the hose away.
Lucía raised both arms to protect herself.
Then the video froze for a split second.
When the image returned...
Renata shoved the little girl hard enough that she crashed against the fence.
Diego slammed the laptop shut.
His breathing became ragged.
He couldn't continue.
Not yet.
Across the room, Lucía slept peacefully for the first time in days, clutching her old stuffed rabbit.
He looked at her tiny face.
Then back at the laptop.
His hands shook as he opened the next video.
This time the date was only three nights earlier.
The night before his flight home.
The recording showed Renata standing in the backyard holding a black trash bag.
Lucía stood beside her with tears streaming down her cheeks.
Renata opened the bag.
One by one...
She threw away the child's drawings.
Her favorite storybooks.
A broken music box.
The handmade Father's Day card Lucía had spent an entire weekend creating.
The little girl tried to rescue it.
Renata stopped her.
Then pointed toward the garbage bag.
Lucía lowered her head.
She threw the card away herself.
Diego could no longer hold back his tears.
What he was watching wasn't punishment.
It was control.
The deliberate destruction of everything that made a child feel safe.
The Message at 2:17 A.M.
As Diego sat in stunned silence, his phone vibrated.
Unknown Number.
He almost ignored it.
Then another message appeared.
"If you watched the videos, you're still looking in the wrong place."
A second message arrived before he could reply.
"Search the attic before Renata gets there."
His heart began pounding.
Only one person could know about the USB drive.
Unless...
Someone else had been watching.
Someone who had stayed silent for months.
Someone who knew a secret even darker than the videos.
Diego slowly looked toward the hotel window.
Across the parking lot...
A silver SUV sat with its headlights off.
Inside, a shadowy figure appeared to be watching the hotel.
The phone vibrated one final time.
"Hurry."
"The box with the pink ribbon is the reason another little girl disappeared."
Diego's blood ran cold.
Another little girl?
Was Lucía telling the truth?
Had there really been someone before her?
Or was someone trying to lure him into a trap?
He looked down at his sleeping daughter.
Then at the mysterious message glowing on his phone.
For the first time that night...
He realized the videos were only the beginning.
The attic was hiding a secret someone had been willing to protect at any cost.
