CHAPTER 4 — The Room Beneath the House

The faint humming stopped.
The silence that followed was even more terrifying.
Diego stood frozen at the top of the hidden staircase, his phone flashlight illuminating only a few worn wooden steps before darkness swallowed the rest.
Behind him, Esteban whispered nervously.
"I've never been down there."
"You built it."
"I built the entrance," the old man replied, his voice shaking. "Renata hired another crew to finish the room after I left. She paid in cash and made everyone sign confidentiality agreements. I thought it was some kind of panic room."
Diego looked down again.
Something about the air felt wrong.
It smelled stale, as though the room had remained sealed for years.
Taking a deep breath, he started down the narrow staircase.
Each wooden step groaned beneath his weight.
The humming never returned.
At the bottom, the beam from his flashlight swept across a small concrete room.
It wasn't large.
Barely ten feet by twelve.
The walls were painted pale blue.
A child's rocking chair sat quietly in one corner.
Against another wall stood a tiny bookshelf filled with fairy tales, coloring books, and stuffed animals carefully arranged as though someone expected a child to return at any moment.
Nothing was covered in dust.
Someone had been cleaning this room.
Recently.
Diego's heartbeat quickened.
On the wall hung dozens of drawings.
Every picture showed the same little family.
A smiling girl.
A woman with long black hair.
And a man whose face had been crossed out with thick black marker.
Every single drawing.
Every single father.
Erased.
The Locked Cabinet
Near the rocking chair stood a narrow white cabinet secured with a small padlock.
Esteban frowned.
"That wasn't here before."
Diego pulled gently on the lock.
It wouldn't move.
He searched the room until he noticed a ceramic doll sitting on a shelf.
Something metallic glinted beneath its dress.
A key.
Inside the cabinet were carefully labeled folders.
VALENTINA
LUCÍA
Diego's breathing became uneven.
He opened Lucía's folder first.
Inside were school report cards.
Medical records.
Copies of family photographs.
Pages of handwritten notes.
Some were dated on the exact days Diego had been away on business.
One page read:
Day 12. Lucía asked when Daddy is coming home. Continue emotional separation.
Another:
She cried less today after removing the stuffed rabbit for six hours.
Another:
Reward obedience with affection. Punish attachment.
Diego felt sick.
This wasn't anger.
This wasn't losing patience.
Someone had been systematically trying to convince his daughter that love was conditional.
Every note was written in Renata's unmistakable handwriting.
The Missing Folder
His hands shook as he opened Valentina's folder.
It was almost empty.
Only one photograph remained.
It showed a smiling six-year-old girl standing in front of the same house.
On the back was a single handwritten sentence.
"She finally stopped asking for him."
Nothing else.
No medical records.
No school documents.
No explanation.
Only silence.
As though someone had deliberately removed every trace of her life.
The Voice Recorder
While searching the cabinet, Diego discovered a small digital voice recorder hidden behind the folders.
Its battery indicator still showed one bar.
He pressed Play.
Static filled the room.
Then a little girl's voice.
"Daddy..."
Diego's knees weakened.
It wasn't Lucía.
The voice sounded slightly older.
"If you ever hear this..."
"...Mom said you don't love me anymore."
A pause.
Soft crying.
"But I don't believe her."
Another pause.
"If something happens to me..."
"...please don't let her do it to another little girl."
The recording ended.
No one spoke.
Esteban quietly removed his cap.
Even the old builder's eyes filled with tears.
The Detective Arrives
A knock echoed from upstairs.
Loud.
Authoritative.
"Police!"
Diego immediately climbed the stairs.
Standing in the hallway was Detective Ana Velasco, accompanied by two uniformed officers.
She introduced herself calmly.
"We received an anonymous report this morning."
Diego frowned.
"I didn't call."
"I know."
She held up a sealed envelope.
"It was delivered to the station before dawn."
Inside the envelope was a single flash drive.
And a handwritten note.
'Search the Santillán residence before the evidence disappears.'
The detective looked past Diego toward the open attic door.
"Mr. Santillán..."
"May we come in?"
Within minutes, forensic investigators filled the attic.
Photographs.
Fingerprints.
Evidence bags.
Every item was documented.
Detective Velasco examined the hidden room without saying a word.
When she emerged nearly an hour later, her expression had completely changed.
She walked directly toward Diego.
"Where is your wife?"
"I don't know."
"When did you last speak to her?"
"Yesterday."
The detective nodded slowly.
"I'm issuing an emergency alert."
"For what?"
She looked him directly in the eyes.
"Because your wife disappeared forty-three minutes ago."
Diego stared in disbelief.
"What do you mean disappeared?"
"Her vehicle was found abandoned on the highway leading out of Guadalajara."
"The engine was still running."
"Her phone."
"Her purse."
"And her wallet..."
"Were all left inside."
Silence.
One officer approached with a clear evidence bag.
"Detective..."
"We found this hidden beneath the driver's seat."
Inside the bag was a folded photograph.
It was old.
Faded.
The edges had yellowed with time.
The picture showed Renata standing beside a little girl.
Valentina.
But someone else was in the photograph.
A woman standing just behind them.
Her face had been carefully cut out with scissors.
Only her hand remained, resting protectively on Valentina's shoulder.
Detective Velasco turned the photograph over.
Three words were written in faded blue ink.
"She knows everything."
At that exact moment, Diego's phone vibrated.
Another message from the unknown number.
"You're too late."
A second message arrived immediately.
"Renata isn't running away..."
"...She's running from the person who took Valentina."
Diego felt every hair on his arms stand up.
Until now, he had believed Renata was the monster.
But what if...
She had also been hiding from someone even more dangerous?
The investigation had just taken a turn no one saw coming.
