CHAPTER 5 — "The DNA Never Lied... It Was the Babies Who Were Switched."

Emily stared at the tiny gold bracelet in disbelief.

It carried the name Emily Carter...

But the birth date belonged to the woman who had claimed to be her twin.

Nothing made sense anymore.

Gunfire echoed through the underground vault as masked men searched every corner.

"Find the bracelet!"

"Kill anyone who saw the files!"

Emily crawled behind a fallen steel cabinet, clutching the velvet box against her chest.

Henry lay motionless on the floor.

His final sacrifice had bought her only seconds.

Suddenly, someone grabbed her arm.

Emily spun around—

It was the mysterious woman.

"Come with me if you want to live."

Emily pulled away.

"Why would I trust you?"

The woman looked her straight in the eyes.

"Because I'm not your enemy."

Another explosion shook the vault.

The ceiling began to collapse.

Without another choice, Emily followed her through a hidden tunnel behind the archive.

After several minutes, they emerged inside an abandoned church on the outskirts of the city.

The woman locked the heavy wooden doors and finally turned to face Emily.

"My name isn't Emily."

"My real name is Grace."

Emily frowned.

"Then who are you?"

Grace took a deep breath.

"I'm the baby everyone thought died."

Emily whispered,

"My twin..."

Grace slowly shook her head.

"No."

"We're not twins."

Emily's heart skipped a beat.

"What?"

Grace opened an old leather journal she had carried for years.

Inside was the original delivery record from the hospital.

Two women had given birth only three minutes apart.

One was Emily's mother.

The other...

...was the family's live-in housekeeper.

During the chaos of a citywide blackout...

The newborn babies were switched.

Emily felt the room spinning.

"So..."

"I wasn't born into the Carter family?"

Grace nodded sadly.

"No."

"You were raised as their daughter."

"But you were never the child they were trying to protect."

Emily's voice cracked.

"Then... who am I?"

Grace reached into the journal and removed one final photograph.

It showed a young woman holding a newborn baby outside a small farmhouse.

On the back were eight handwritten words.

'Take her far away. They'll kill her if they find her.'

Emily stared at the woman in the picture.

She looked exactly like her.

"My mother..."

Grace nodded.

"She's alive."

Emily gasped.

"My mother is alive?"

"Yes."

"For twenty-three years, she's been hiding."

"Waiting for the day you discovered the truth."

Before Emily could ask where she was...

The old church doors burst open.

A dozen armed men surrounded them.

A tall man in a black suit slowly stepped inside.

Everyone lowered their weapons.

Even Grace stepped back in fear.

The man smiled at Emily.

"You've caused us a lot of trouble."

Emily swallowed hard.

"Who are you?"

He reached into his pocket...

...and placed another DNA report on the altar.

"This one..."

"...is the only real DNA test ever made."

Emily looked at the name signed at the bottom.

The laboratory director.

The date.

The official seal.

Everything was authentic.

Then she read the final result.

Her blood turned cold.

Biological Father: UNKNOWN.

The man smiled wider.

"You've been looking for the wrong father..."

"...because the man who created you..."

"...was never supposed to exist."
