CHAPTER 4 — THE FILE THEY BURIED TWENTY-NINE YEARS AGO

The room remained silent long after Andrés walked away.
Daniela stared at the doorway.
"He didn't deny it..."
Rosario slowly nodded.
"No."
"He admitted it without realizing he did."
Daniela's breathing became uneven.
"So..."
"Our baby is alive?"
Rosario wanted to say yes.
She wanted to give her daughter hope.
Instead, she answered with the only thing she knew for certain.
"I know someone wants us to believe he's dead."
"And people don't fake a death unless the living child is worth hiding."
An hour later, Detective Esteban Salazar from the Special Crimes Unit arrived at the hospital.
Unlike the uniformed officers who had already taken Daniela's statement, Salazar didn't look impressed by expensive suits or influential family names.
His gray hair was beginning to show.
His notebook was worn.
His eyes missed nothing.
He introduced himself politely before sitting across from Rosario.
"I've reviewed your daughter's medical photographs."
Rosario remained quiet.
"The injuries aren't consistent with a simple fall."
Daniela looked at him hopefully.
"Then you'll arrest Andrés?"
The detective hesitated.
"If this were an ordinary family..."
"...yes."
"But it isn't."
Rosario understood exactly what he meant.
"The Luján family."
Salazar nodded once.
"They've already called people much higher than me."
He opened a thin case file.
"Mrs. Mendoza..."
"I need to ask something unusual."
Rosario folded her arms.
"Go ahead."
"Were you once employed by the Federal Prosecutor's Office?"
Daniela looked surprised.
Rosario answered carefully.
"Years ago."
Salazar slid an old newspaper clipping across the table.
It showed a much younger Rosario standing outside a courthouse beside several arrested businessmen.
The headline read:
FEDERAL INVESTIGATOR EXPOSES $400 MILLION MONEY-LAUNDERING NETWORK
Daniela stared at her mother.
"You never told me..."
Rosario smiled sadly.
"I left that life when your father died."
Salazar leaned forward.
"The men you helped imprison..."
"...one of them was Víctor Luján."
Rosario's face slowly lost color.
Andrés' father.
The man who had supposedly died of a heart attack twenty-three years earlier.
She remembered him instantly.
Cold.
Brilliant.
Untouchable.
The financial mastermind behind dozens of shell companies.
But before prosecutors could bring him to trial...
He had disappeared.
Official records later claimed he had died overseas.
Rosario had always believed it.
Until now.
"You think this has something to do with Víctor?"
Salazar nodded.
"I think your daughter married into something much bigger than domestic violence."
He removed another document from his folder.
"This arrived anonymously at our office yesterday."
Rosario unfolded the paper.
It wasn't recent.
The edges had yellowed with age.
The date made her heartbeat quicken.
Twenty-nine years earlier.
Across the top were the words:
CONFIDENTIAL ADOPTION RECORD
Mother:
Unknown
Infant:
Female
Date of Birth:
The exact same birthday as Daniela.
Rosario frowned.
"This makes no sense."
Then she reached the final line.
Child transferred to the custody of Rosario Mendoza under emergency protection order.
Her hands began shaking.
"No..."
"This is impossible."
Daniela looked confused.
"Mom..."
"What is it?"
Rosario whispered,
"I never adopted you."
The room fell silent.
Daniela laughed nervously.
"That's ridiculous."
"You gave birth to me."
Rosario slowly looked up.
"I thought I did."
Fragments of old memories suddenly flooded back.
Twenty-nine years ago...
A complicated labor.
Heavy bleeding.
Emergency surgery.
Three days unconscious.
When Rosario finally woke, a nurse placed a newborn baby in her arms.
She had never questioned it.
Never requested additional paperwork.
She had simply thanked God that her daughter was alive.
Now...
Nothing felt certain anymore.
Detective Salazar spoke carefully.
"The original birth records disappeared years ago."
"So did the hospital archives."
"But this copy survived."
Rosario stared at the document.
Someone had hidden it.
Someone had waited decades.
Why reveal it now?
Daniela looked as though the world beneath her had collapsed.
"So..."
"You might not be my biological mother?"
Rosario immediately grabbed both of her daughter's hands.
"I don't care whose blood runs through your veins."
"I raised you."
"I loved you."
"I will die protecting you."
Daniela burst into tears and embraced her mother tightly.
Neither woman noticed the small security camera mounted above the hospital door.
Its tiny red light blinked silently.
Someone was watching.
Across town...
Inside the top floor of the Luján Foundation headquarters...
Doña Carmen sat at the head of a polished mahogany table.
Andrés stood beside the window.
Fabián entered carrying a tablet.
"They know about the transfer file."
Doña Carmen remained expressionless.
"And?"
"They've also found the neonatal record."
She slowly closed her eyes.
"I warned Víctor this day would come."
Andrés turned sharply.
"My father has nothing to do with this."
Doña Carmen looked directly at her son.
"You've spent your whole life believing that."
Silence filled the room.
Then she calmly opened a locked drawer.
Inside rested an old photograph.
Two newborn babies.
Lying side by side in identical bassinets.
One wore a bracelet labeled Luján.
The other...
Mendoza.
Doña Carmen slid the photograph across the table.
Andrés stared at it.
His face turned white.
"What is this?"
"The truth."
"You and Daniela were never supposed to meet."
Back at the hospital...
Rosario couldn't stop thinking about the adoption record.
Something felt wrong.
Very wrong.
She remembered every detail of Daniela's childhood.
Her first steps.
Her first words.
The scar on her knee from falling off a bicycle.
None of that could be fake.
But the paperwork...
The paperwork suggested someone had rewritten history before Daniela was old enough to remember.
Late that evening, Liliana quietly entered Daniela's room.
She closed the door behind her.
"I don't have much time."
She pulled a small flash drive from her pocket.
"I copied these before they erased the system."
Rosario accepted it carefully.
"What is it?"
"Security footage."
"From the maternity wing."
Rosario frowned.
"But Daniela wasn't in the maternity wing."
Liliana swallowed hard.
"I know."
She looked directly into Rosario's eyes.
"The footage isn't from this week."
"It's from twenty-nine years ago."
Rosario felt her heart stop.
"The day Daniela was born."
Liliana's voice trembled.
"Or..."
May you like
"...the day someone switched two babies."
