CHAPTER 5 — THE VIDEO THAT PROVED TWO BABIES WERE SWITCHED

Rosario stared at the flash drive in her trembling hand.

It looked ordinary.

A cheap black USB stick worth only a few dollars.

Yet Liliana had risked her career—and perhaps her life—to deliver it.

"If anyone asks," Liliana whispered, "you never saw me."

Before Rosario could respond, the young nurse slipped out of the room.

The door clicked shut.

For several seconds, neither Rosario nor Daniela spoke.

Finally, Daniela broke the silence.

"What if it's true?"

Rosario looked at her.

"What if... I'm not your daughter?"

Rosario crossed the room in two quick steps, cupped Daniela's face in both hands, and looked straight into her tear-filled eyes.

"Listen to me."

"I carried you."

"I raised you."

"I loved you every single day of your life."

"If someone stole the truth from us twenty-nine years ago..."

"...that changes the crime."

"It does not change who my daughter is."

Daniela threw her arms around her mother and cried harder than she had since losing her baby.

An hour later, Detective Esteban Salazar returned.

Rosario quietly showed him the flash drive.

"Can we watch this somewhere safe?"

Salazar nodded.

"Not on the hospital network."

"They monitor everything."

He led them through a restricted hallway into a small evidence review room used by investigators.

An aging desktop computer sat against the wall.

No internet connection.

No hospital surveillance.

Salazar locked the door.

Rosario inserted the flash drive.

One folder appeared on the screen.

ARCHIVE – MATERNITY WING – JULY 1997

Daniela's birthday.

Rosario's hands began shaking.

She clicked PLAY.

The footage was grainy.

Black and white.

No sound.

A timestamp blinked in the upper corner.

2:14 A.M.

A nurse pushed two newborn bassinets down the hallway.

Each infant wore an identification bracelet.

One bassinet was labeled MENDOZA.

The other...

LUJÁN.

Daniela leaned closer to the screen.

"My God..."

At first, nothing seemed unusual.

Then the video froze for exactly eighteen seconds.

When it resumed...

The bassinets had switched places.

Rosario frowned.

"Pause."

Salazar zoomed in.

"The timestamp skipped."

He pointed to the screen.

"This footage was edited."

Rosario's pulse quickened.

"Can we recover the missing frames?"

Salazar called a digital forensics technician he trusted.

Twenty minutes later, the technician arrived carrying specialized recovery software.

"It'll take a while."

The progress bar crawled across the screen.

Twenty percent.

Forty.

Sixty.

No one spoke.

Finally...

Recovery Complete.

The missing eighteen seconds appeared.

Salazar pressed PLAY.

A man wearing a surgeon's cap entered the hallway.

His face was partially hidden by a mask.

He looked around to make sure no one was watching.

Then...

He calmly removed both babies' bracelets.

Rosario covered her mouth.

The man exchanged the identification bands.

Then he switched the infants between the bassinets.

Finally, he looked directly toward the camera.

For one terrifying second...

His face became visible.

Daniela gasped.

"No..."

Rosario's blood ran cold.

She recognized him instantly.

Not because she had met him recently.

Because she had investigated him decades ago.

Dr. Ricardo Zárate.

The obstetrician who had delivered Daniela.

The same doctor who had officially signed her birth certificate.

The same doctor who had mysteriously disappeared eighteen years earlier.

Detective Salazar paused the video.

"No wonder someone erased this."

Rosario whispered,

"This wasn't an accident."

"It was planned."

Daniela suddenly looked ill.

"If the babies were switched..."

"...who was I supposed to be?"

Before anyone could answer...

Salazar's phone rang.

He stepped into the hallway.

When he returned, his expression had completely changed.

"We have another problem."

"What happened?" Rosario asked.

"The morgue."

"What about it?"

"The baby's body..."

"...isn't there."

The room fell silent.

"What do you mean it isn't there?"

Salazar swallowed.

"There was never a body."

Daniela felt dizzy.

"I knew it."

"I knew I heard him crying."

Rosario grabbed her daughter's hand.

"He's alive."

Daniela looked at her desperately.

"You really believe that?"

Rosario nodded.

"I don't think they stole a body."

"I think they stole a child."

Across the city...

Inside a secluded luxury estate hidden behind high stone walls...

A nanny gently rocked a newborn baby to sleep.

The infant wore soft blue pajamas.

A tiny silver bracelet rested around his ankle.

Engraved on the inside were the words:

A.L.

The nanny smiled.

"Your mommy will come for you one day."

She kissed his forehead.

Neither she nor the baby noticed the hidden camera mounted in the corner of the nursery.

Someone watched the room twenty-four hours a day.

Back at the hospital, Salazar received another encrypted email.

No sender.

No signature.

Only a single attachment.

A scanned ledger from 1997.

Across the top were the words:

LUNA FOUNDATION — PRIVATE INFANT PLACEMENT PROGRAM

Rosario's heart skipped a beat.

Below the title appeared a numbered list.

Children.

Dates.

Payments.

Client names.

Every line represented a baby.

Bought.

Sold.

Or exchanged.

Halfway down the page...

One entry had been highlighted in red.

Case #27

Original Family: Mendoza

Receiving Family: Luján

Status: Completed

Daniela could barely breathe.

"I was sold?"

Rosario slowly shook her head.

"No..."

"You were selected."

"For what?" Daniela whispered.

Before Rosario could answer, Salazar turned to the final page of the ledger.

At the bottom was a handwritten note in blue ink.

Only one sentence.

'The girl must never learn who her real father is.'

Beneath the sentence...

Was a signature.

Not Andrés.

Not Doña Carmen.

Not Dr. Zárate.

The signature belonged to a man everyone believed had died twenty-three years earlier.

Víctor Luján.

Rosario felt the room spin.

If Víctor had signed that document...

Then he hadn't died.

He had been hiding.

Waiting.

And somehow...

May you like

Everything that had happened to Daniela—including her marriage to Andrés—had been planned long before she was even old enough to speak.
