CHAPTER 3: THE SECRET INSIDE THE PHOTOGRAPH

The sound of the gunshot kept echoing inside Camila’s head.
Even after the black truck disappeared down the street.
Even after the police sirens began approaching in the distance.
Even after Mauricio released her and stepped away.
She could still feel the moment when he threw himself over her body to protect her.
The same man she had left hours ago.
The same man she had called a traitor.
The same man she believed had destroyed her family.
Had just taken a bullet meant for her.
Camila looked at the wall.
A hole remained where the bullet had passed.
Only a few centimeters away from where her head had been.
Her hands started shaking.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Mauricio looked at her silently.
"Because if you knew the truth, they would know you knew."
"Who are they?"
He looked toward the broken window.
"The people who have been controlling everything."
The police arrived ten minutes later.
But when they saw who owned the house and who was involved, their attitude changed.
Too quickly.
One officer barely looked at the bullet hole.
Another asked simple questions and seemed eager to leave.
Camila noticed.
Sofía noticed too.
After they left, the lawyer closed the door.
"Something is wrong."
Camila nodded.
"They're protecting someone."
Sofía looked at Mauricio.
"How long have you known?"
Mauricio didn't answer immediately.
Then he finally said:
"Six months."
Camila's eyes widened.
"Six months?"
"You expect me to believe you were protecting us for six months while pretending to hate my parents?"
Mauricio lowered his head.
"I didn't want to hurt them."
"But you did."
"I know."
His voice broke.
"And I will regret that for the rest of my life."
Three months earlier...
Mauricio remembered the day everything changed.
He had returned home early.
The house was empty.
Except for one person.
His mother, Rebeca.
She was standing in his office.
Holding a folder.
A folder she had no right to touch.
"What are you doing?"
Rebeca didn't look surprised.
She simply smiled.
"Protecting this family."
Inside the folder were documents.
Property records.
Bank transfers.
Old contracts.
And a photograph.
The same photograph Camila had just seen.
"Where did you get these?"
Rebeca's smile disappeared.
"Your father-in-law has something that belongs to us."
Mauricio frowned.
"My father-in-law?"
"Julián Serrano."
Then she said something that shocked him.
"Your wife's family destroyed my family twenty years ago."
Mauricio stared at her.
"What are you talking about?"
But Rebeca refused to explain.
Instead, she gave him an order.
"Help us get that house."
"And if I refuse?"
She looked at him coldly.
"Then Camila finds out who you really are."
Mauricio felt confused.
"What does that mean?"
Rebeca placed another document on the table.
His signature.
On a loan agreement he never remembered signing.
A fake debt.
A trap.
"If you don't cooperate, you lose everything."
Back in the present, Camila listened carefully.
She wanted to believe him.
But trust was not something that returned overnight.
Especially after watching her parents suffer.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Mauricio looked at her.
"Because Octavio threatened your parents."
The room went silent.
"He told me if I warned you, your father would disappear."
Camila felt sick.
"My father?"
Mauricio nodded.
"He said they had been waiting years for revenge."
That night, Camila barely slept.
Too many questions.
Too many secrets.
At sunrise, she went to see her father.
Don Julián was sitting near the hotel window.
Looking outside.
Like a man carrying a burden too heavy for his age.
"Dad..."
He turned around.
And immediately knew.
"You found out."
Camila froze.
"What?"
Her father sighed.
"I knew this day would come."
"Found out what?"
He looked at her.
"The truth about twenty years ago."
For the first time in her life, Camila saw fear in her father's eyes.
Not sadness.
Not worry.
Fear.
"Dad, who are Rebeca and Octavio?"
Her father closed his eyes.
"They were never supposed to come back."
"Come back from where?"
Silence.
Then he whispered:
"From prison."
Camila stepped back.
"What?"
"Twenty years ago, I worked as an accountant for a construction company."
"And?"
"I discovered they were stealing money from hundreds of families."
"Who?"
Her father looked toward the door.
"Rebeca."
Camila stopped breathing.
"My mother-in-law?"
"And Octavio."
Her father continued:
"They used fake documents to take people's homes."
Camila felt a wave of anger.
"So you exposed them?"
"No."
Her father looked broken.
"I tried."
"Then why didn't anyone know?"
Because before he could reveal the truth...
Someone framed him.
He lost his job.
His reputation.
Everything.
And the people who did it?
Walked away.
Camila sat down.
Her entire reality had changed.
Her parents weren't victims of a random attack.
They had been hunted for twenty years.
But then her father said something even more shocking.
"There is one thing you don't know."
"What?"
"The evidence I found wasn't destroyed."
Camila looked at him.
"Where is it?"
Her father pointed toward the old photograph in her hand.
"Hidden in the house."
"The house?"
He nodded.
"The same house they are trying to steal."
That afternoon, Camila, Mauricio, and Sofía returned to Tonalá.
They searched every room.
Every cabinet.
Every corner.
Until Don Julián noticed something strange.
The old blue gate.
The one he painted himself.
"Wait."
Everyone looked at him.
"I remember something."
He walked outside slowly.
He touched the gate.
"When I bought this house, the previous owner told me something strange."
"What?"
"He said..."
His voice became quieter.
"Some houses protect their secrets better than people do."
Mauricio examined the metal frame.
Then he found something.
A small hidden compartment.
Inside was a USB drive.
And a handwritten note.
Camila opened it.
Only five words were written:
"Trust no one. Not even family."
Her heart stopped.
Because underneath the message…
Was another name.
A name that made Mauricio turn pale.
A name that made Sofía drop the papers from her hands.
The name of the person who had ordered everything.
The person who wanted the house.
The person who had been manipulating them from the beginning.
CAMILA SERRANO.
Her own name.
Someone had written her name as the mastermind.
And suddenly everyone looked at her differently.
Even Mauricio.
Even her father.
Because the next secret they uncovered would reveal that Camila's entire life…
May you like
might have been built on a lie.
