CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET BURIED FOR THIRTY YEARS

The hospital room became so quiet that even the sound of the baby's breathing seemed loud.

Sebastián frowned.

“What did you just say?”

Dr. Ernesto Salvatierra didn't answer immediately.

His eyes remained fixed on the newborn sleeping peacefully in Mariela's arms.

That tiny birthmark.

That same shape.

That same place.

A small reddish crescent near the left shoulder.

Thirty years ago, another baby had carried that exact mark.

A baby everyone believed had died.

Ernesto's hands trembled.

Doña Rebeca stepped forward, her elegant face suddenly pale.

“Doctor… is there a problem?”

This time, Ernesto looked directly at her.

And the color drained from his face.

He recognized her too.

He would never forget that woman.

Not after everything that happened.

“Rebeca Ibarra,” he said quietly.

Her breathing stopped.

“You remember me?”

The doctor's eyes darkened.

“I have tried to forget you for thirty years.”

Sebastián looked confused.

“Mother… do you know this man?”

For the first time in years, Doña Rebeca looked frightened.

“No,” she said quickly.

“I don't know him.”

“You're lying,” Ernesto replied.

Mariela looked from one face to another.

“What is happening?”

Nobody answered.

Then the doctor whispered:

“I was there the night your family committed the greatest crime of its existence.”

Sebastián laughed nervously.

“This is ridiculous.”

But nobody else was laughing.

Ernesto slowly removed his glasses.

“Thirty years ago, I worked at a small maternity clinic outside the city.”

He looked at Rebeca.

“You arrived in the middle of the night carrying a newborn baby.”

The older woman's hands began shaking.

“You begged me to help you.”

“Stop talking,” she whispered.

“You said the child's mother had died during childbirth.”

Tears appeared in the doctor's eyes.

“But it was all a lie.”

Sebastián frowned.

“What child?”

Ernesto looked directly at him.

“You.”

The room seemed to stop.

“What?”

“You were that baby.”

Sebastián stared at him.

“No…”

“Yes.”

The doctor took a deep breath.

“Your mother didn't give birth to you.”

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Then Sebastián laughed.

A loud, disbelieving laugh.

“That's insane.”

Ernesto didn't move.

“You are not biologically related to Rebeca Ibarra.”

“Enough!”

Doña Rebeca's scream echoed through the room.

But it was too late.

The secret had begun to emerge.

Mariela held her baby tighter.

She could barely breathe.

Ernesto continued.

“The woman who gave birth to you was a young servant named Elena Morales.”

The name seemed to strike Rebeca like lightning.

“Stop!”

“She worked for the Ibarra family.”

“No!”

“She became pregnant by your father.”

“STOP!”

The doctor raised his voice for the first time.

“Your father fell in love with her.”

The room froze.

“Your grandmother discovered the affair and decided that a servant's child could never inherit the Ibarra fortune.”

Tears ran down Ernesto's face.

“On the night you were born, Elena disappeared.”

Sebastián's smile vanished.

“What do you mean… disappeared?”

The doctor swallowed.

“She died.”

Mariela covered her mouth.

“No…”

“She bled to death after childbirth.”

“And my mother?”

Ernesto looked at Rebeca.

“She took the baby.”

Silence.

“She pretended the child was hers.”

Sebastián slowly turned toward the woman who had raised him.

“You… stole me?”

Rebeca's lips trembled.

“I saved you.”

“You lied to me my entire life?”

“I gave you everything!”

The doctor's voice became cold.

“You stole another woman's child and built your entire life on that crime.”

Sebastián took a step backward.

“No…”

He looked sick.

He looked lost.

Then his eyes fell on the newborn in Mariela's arms.

“The baby…”

Ernesto nodded.

“The birthmark belongs to Elena's bloodline.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means your son carries the same mark because he is her descendant.”

Sebastián's face turned white.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The resemblance.

The eyes.

The features.

The child looked exactly like the old photographs hidden in his father's study.

Photographs of a woman nobody was allowed to mention.

Elena.

His real mother.

He sank into a chair.

“My entire life…”

“…was a lie.”

Tears filled his eyes.

Doña Rebeca stepped toward him.

“Sebastián, listen to me…”

“Don't touch me.”

Her hand froze.

“I did it for you.”

“You did it for yourself!”

His voice exploded through the room.

“You lied to my father.”

“You lied to everyone.”

“You let an innocent woman die!”

“I had no choice!”

“You always had a choice!”

For the first time in his life, Sebastián looked at her not with love…

But with horror.

Mariela watched silently.

She had dreamed of seeing this family fall apart.

Yet now she only felt sadness.

Because the little boy sleeping in her arms had unknowingly exposed a secret buried for three decades.

Suddenly, someone knocked on the door.

A police officer entered.

Behind him stood Camila Ríos.

Mariela's lawyer.

She looked serious.

“Mariela…”

“What happened?”

Camila glanced at Sebastián and Rebeca.

“The financial crimes you discovered have already been reported.”

Rebeca's face lost all color.

“The authorities have frozen the Ibarra accounts.”

Another officer entered.

“We also have an arrest warrant.”

“For whom?” Sebastián asked weakly.

The officer looked directly at Doña Rebeca.

“For fraud, money laundering, and obstruction of justice.”

The older woman couldn't breathe.

“No…”

“There is also an investigation regarding the death of Elena Morales.”

“No…”

The handcuffs appeared.

“No!”

She looked at Sebastián desperately.

“Please… say something.”

But he didn't move.

“Sebastián…”

He slowly raised his eyes.

The woman who had controlled his entire life suddenly looked like a stranger.

“You stole me from my mother.”

“Please…”

“You taught me how to destroy people.”

“I did everything for this family!”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“You did everything for yourself.”

The officers placed handcuffs on her wrists.

For the first time in decades…

Doña Rebeca looked powerless.

As they led her away, she turned one last time.

“You'll regret this!”

Nobody answered.

The door closed.

Silence returned.

Then Sebastián began to cry.

Not like a businessman.

Not like a powerful man.

But like a little boy who had just learned that his entire identity was built on a lie.

After a long moment, he looked at Mariela.

Then at his son.

“I almost took him away from you.”

Mariela said nothing.

“I became exactly like the people who destroyed my mother.”

Tears rolled down his face.

“I am so sorry.”

For the first time since their marriage collapsed, she saw genuine regret in his eyes.

But some wounds are too deep.

Some apologies arrive too late.

Mariela kissed her baby's forehead.

“I will protect him,” she whispered.

“No matter who you are… or who your family was.”

Dr. Ernesto smiled softly.

“His story doesn't begin with lies.”

He looked at the sleeping child.

“It begins with truth.”

Outside, the first rays of sunlight entered the room.

A new day had arrived.

The Ibarra empire was collapsing.

A terrible secret had finally been exposed.

And in the arms of a mother who had lost everything…

A little boy slept peacefully.

Completely unaware that his birth had changed the destiny of an entire family forever.
