CHAPTER 5: THE LAST MESSAGE

The next morning, Sebastián stood outside a small yellow house on the edge of Mexico City.

The address Dr. Ernesto had given him was written on a piece of paper that trembled in his hand.

He had spent his entire life entering luxurious mansions, five-star hotels, and corporate offices.

But this simple little house made him more nervous than anything else ever had.

Because for the first time…

He was about to meet his real family.

The door opened before he could knock.

Dr. Ernesto stood there.

For a long moment, neither man spoke.

Then the older doctor smiled sadly.

“You have your father's eyes.”

Sebastián's throat tightened.

“And you have his way of standing,” Ernesto added softly.

A tear escaped before Sebastián could stop it.

“I don't even know who I am anymore.”

Ernesto stepped forward and hugged him.

A real hug.

Warm.

Gentle.

The kind of hug Sebastián couldn't remember ever receiving.

“You're exactly where you're supposed to be,” the doctor whispered.

Inside the house, photographs covered the walls.

There were pictures of birthdays, weddings, and family vacations.

In the center of one wall hung a portrait of a young man.

Dark hair.

Warm smile.

Kind eyes.

Sebastián froze.

He was staring at himself.

Or rather…

At the man he looked exactly like.

“That's him,” Ernesto said quietly.

“Alejandro Salvatierra.”

“My brother.”

Sebastián walked closer.

His hands shook.

For thirty years he had wondered where he came from.

Now he was looking at the answer.

“He looks… like me.”

Ernesto smiled.

“No.”

“You look like him.”

For the first time in his life, Sebastián laughed and cried at the same time.

Then another voice came from the kitchen.

“Ernesto? Is he here?”

An elderly woman appeared.

She stopped instantly.

Her hand flew to her mouth.

“Oh my God…”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Mamá,” Ernesto whispered.

The woman took one shaky step forward.

Then another.

Finally, she reached out and touched Sebastián's face.

“You're Alejandro's son…”

He couldn't speak.

She began crying.

“My grandson.”

The word hit him harder than anything else.

Grandson.

Nobody had ever called him that.

The woman pulled him into her arms.

“I prayed for this day.”

Sebastián closed his eyes.

For the first time in years…

He didn't feel alone.

Hours later, they sat around the dining table.

Ernesto placed a small wooden chest in front of him.

“This belonged to Alejandro.”

Inside were photographs, notebooks, and old letters.

At the very bottom lay a cassette tape.

A small label was attached.

For my child.

Sebastián stared at it.

“When did he record this?”

“A few weeks before the accident,” Ernesto answered.

“He didn't know if the baby would be a boy or a girl.”

Tears filled Sebastián's eyes.

“He made this for me?”

“Yes.”

Ernesto found an old tape player.

With trembling fingers, Sebastián pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a warm male voice appeared.

“Hello, little one.”

Sebastián covered his mouth.

“By the time you hear this, I may already be old…”

The voice laughed softly.

“…or perhaps life had different plans.”

Everyone sat in silence.

“I don't know your name yet.”

“I don't know the color of your eyes.”

“I don't know if you'll love music like your mother or books like me.”

“But I already love you.”

Sebastián's tears began falling.

“I hope one day I get to teach you how to ride a bicycle.”

“I hope I get to embarrass you with terrible jokes.”

“And I hope you always know something…”

The voice paused.

“You were wanted.”

“You were dreamed of.”

“You were loved before you were born.”

The room was silent except for quiet sobs.

“If one day I cannot be with you…”

“…don't be angry with life.”

“Be kind.”

“Protect your family.”

“And if you become a father…”

“…hold your child every chance you get.”

Because time is precious.

And love is the greatest gift we leave behind.”

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Sebastián cried openly.

Thirty years.

Thirty years believing he had been unwanted.

Thirty years believing love had conditions.

And now…

A man he had never met had just given him the greatest gift of all.

The truth.

That evening, Sebastián returned to the hospital.

Mariela was feeding Mateo when he entered.

She looked up.

“You're back.”

He nodded.

Something in his face had changed.

“You look different.”

“I met my family.”

She smiled softly.

“Your real family?”

“Yes.”

He walked closer and looked at Mateo.

The baby smiled.

Again, he raised his tiny arms.

“Papa.”

Sebastián laughed through his tears.

He picked him up.

For a long time, he simply held his son.

Remembering the words from the recording.

Hold your child every chance you get.

Finally, he looked at Mariela.

“I know I don't deserve forgiveness.”

She remained silent.

“I hurt you.”

“Yes.”

“I failed you.”

“Yes.”

“I almost became the same kind of person who destroyed my mother.”

A long silence followed.

Then he whispered:

“But I want to be better.”

Mariela looked at him carefully.

For the first time…

She believed him.

Not completely.

Not yet.

But enough to see that the arrogant man she had married was gone.

In his place stood someone broken.

Someone learning.

Someone trying.

Mateo yawned and fell asleep against his father's chest.

Sebastián smiled.

“He's perfect.”

“He is,” Mariela replied.

Outside the window, the city lights began to glow.

A new chapter was beginning.

A family once built on lies had fallen apart.

But another family…

One built on truth…

May you like

Was slowly being born.

TO BE CONTINUED…
