CHAPTER 2 â The Boy Who Was Never Supposed To Be Found

The alley went silent.
The rich woman wrapped her arms around the homeless boy, but he didnât hug her back.
His name was Ethan Whitmore.
Three months ago, every news channel in the city had shown his face.
MISSING BILLIONAIRE HEIR.
FAMILY OFFERS $5 MILLION REWARD.
POLICE SUSPECT KIDNAPPING.
But Ethan had not been kidnapped.
He had run.
His mother, Victoria Whitmore, sobbed as she held him.
âEthan, please⊠come home.â
Ethanâs eyes turned cold.
âHome?â he whispered. âYou mean the mansion where nobody believed me?â
Victoria froze.
The crowd leaned closer.
Lilyâs father quickly pulled Lily behind him, realizing this was much bigger than a simple act of kindness.
Ethan lifted his sleeve.
Bruises covered his arm.
âMy stepfather said I was lying. He told everyone I was unstable. Then he locked me in the basement for three days.â
Victoria shook her head in horror.
âNo⊠Richard told me you left because you hated me.â
Ethan laughed bitterly.
âHe wanted me gone before my eighteenth birthday.â
The motherâs face turned pale.
Because Ethan was only two weeks away from inheriting his grandfatherâs fortune.
Suddenly, one of the bodyguards stepped back nervously.
Victoria noticed.
âWhere is Richard?â she demanded.
Before anyone could answer, another black car stopped at the alley.
A tall man in an expensive suit stepped out.
Richard Whitmore.
He smiled like nothing was wrong.
âMy God, Ethan. We were so worried.â
Ethan backed away.
Lily suddenly pointed at him.
âThat man is scary.â
Richardâs smile vanished.
Then Lily whispered something that made everyone turn.
âHe was watching from across the street before the lady came.â
Victoria stared at Richard.
âYou knew he was here?â
Richardâs jaw tightened.
For the first time, the perfect billionaire husband looked afraid.
Then Ethan pulled a tiny recorder from his torn jacket.
âI knew youâd come.â
He pressed play.
Richardâs voice filled the alley.
âThe boy disappears tonight. If he reaches eighteen, we lose everything.â
Victoria staggered backward.
The crowd gasped.
Richard lunged forwardâ
But the bodyguards grabbed him before he could touch Ethan.
Police sirens screamed in the distance.
Ethan looked at Lily with tears in his eyes.
âYou didnât just give me food,â he said softly. âYou gave me time.â
Victoria knelt before Lily.
âWhat is your name, sweetheart?â
âLily.â
Victoria held her trembling hand.
âThen from today on, Lily Parker will never be forgotten by the Whitmore family.â
But as Richard was dragged away, he smiled at Ethan and whispered:
âYou think I was the only one?â
That night, inside the Whitmore mansion, Victoria opened her late husbandâs locked safe.
Inside was a file marked:
LILY PARKER â PROTECT AT ALL COSTS.
And under it was a photo of Lilyâs motherâŠ
