Chapter 2: "The Billionaire's Offer—And the Secret Hidden Inside Mr. Cuddles"

The mall suddenly felt too quiet.

Not because people had stopped talking.

Because everyone nearby sensed something was terribly wrong.

The security team immediately formed a circle around Spencer Davis and little Sophie. Their eyes scanned every balcony, every escalator, every exit.

No one moved without permission.

No one looked relaxed.

Elena stood frozen, unable to pull her eyes away from the photograph in Spencer's trembling hand.

A sleeping child.

Taken through her bedroom window.

Someone had been watching Sophie.

For a long time.

Spencer folded the picture with shaking fingers before slipping it into his jacket.

His voice became cold.

The kind of cold that frightened powerful men.

"Lock down every exit."

A security officer nodded instantly.

"Already done, sir."

"No one leaves until every camera, every employee, and every witness has been interviewed."

"Yes, sir."

Another guard stepped closer.

"The police are on their way."

Spencer answered without looking away from Sophie.

"So is my private investigation team."

He held his daughter tighter.

"You are not letting her out of your sight."

"Never again."

Sophie suddenly looked up.

"Daddy..."

Spencer immediately softened.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"I made a promise."

"What promise?"

"I told Elena we'd buy Mr. Cuddles ice cream after we found you."

For one brief moment...

The frightened billionaire smiled.

The first genuine smile anyone around him had seen that afternoon.

He kissed Sophie's forehead.

"Mr. Cuddles deserves two scoops."

Sophie giggled.

Even several security guards couldn't hide small smiles.

Then she reached toward Elena.

"Come with us."

Elena blinked.

"Oh... I don't think I should."

"Please."

"I have things to do."

"What things?"

Elena hesitated.

"I was going to buy a book."

Sophie frowned seriously.

"A book can wait."

Spencer looked at Elena.

"I know this is an unusual request."

"You've already done enough."

"I'd still appreciate it if you stayed for a few minutes."

"There are questions my team would like to ask."

Elena nodded.

"Of course."

They were escorted into the mall's private security office.

Outside the room stood armed guards.

Inside, Spencer refused to let Sophie leave his lap.

The little girl had stopped crying.

But every few minutes she checked to make sure her father was still there.

Only then would she relax.

A woman in a navy business suit entered.

Mid-forties.

Sharp eyes.

Calm voice.

She carried a tablet filled with reports.

"Mr. Davis."

"Lena?"

"Our investigators have begun reviewing every available camera."

"What did you find?"

She hesitated.

"Something strange."

The room became silent.

"The security cameras covering the toy store were disabled."

"We know."

"But..."

She tapped her tablet.

"The cameras in the hallway outside the toy store weren't disabled."

Spencer frowned.

"Then why didn't they catch the suspect?"

"Because..."

She enlarged several images.

"...no one approached Sophie."

Everyone stared.

There she was.

Tiny.

Holding Mr. Cuddles.

Standing exactly where she'd described.

Looking at teddy bears.

Then puppy toys.

Then...

She simply walked away.

Alone.

No one touched her.

No one called her.

No stranger led her anywhere.

Spencer looked confused.

"That makes no sense."

Lena nodded.

"You're right."

"The little girl wasn't taken."

Everyone looked at her.

Elena slowly pointed toward the screen.

"She wasn't kidnapped."

"She was distracted."

The investigator tilted her head.

"What do you mean?"

"I've waited tables for twelve years."

"So?"

"I watch people all day."

"When parents shop with children..."

She pointed again.

"The children never look at one toy."

"They always look at the next one."

"And then the next."

"And then something shiny catches their eye."

Sophie quietly whispered,

"The puppies."

Elena smiled gently.

"Exactly."

She looked back at Spencer.

"Whoever planned this didn't need to grab Sophie."

"They only needed to know exactly how children think."

The room fell silent.

Lena spoke softly.

"They expected her curiosity to separate her from you."

One security officer muttered,

"That's... actually brilliant."

Spencer didn't answer.

His jaw tightened.

Someone had studied his daughter.

Not for hours.

For weeks.

Maybe months.

A technician hurried into the room carrying a clear evidence bag.

"Sir."

"What is it?"

"We found something."

Inside the bag...

Was Mr. Cuddles.

Sophie's teddy bear.

The little girl gasped.

"My bear!"

Spencer looked confused.

"I thought she never lost it."

The technician shook his head.

"We found it after forensics searched the toy department."

Sophie hugged herself.

"I had him..."

"I know I had him..."

Elena suddenly frowned.

Something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

She looked carefully at the teddy bear.

Then at Sophie.

Then back again.

"May I?"

The technician handed her the evidence bag.

Elena slowly turned the bear over.

The stitching along its back looked newer than the rest.

One line of thread wasn't the same color.

Someone had repaired it recently.

Except...

The repair wasn't done by hand.

It was machine perfect.

Too perfect.

"This isn't original."

The room went still.

"What?"

Elena carefully pressed the teddy's back.

Instead of soft stuffing...

Something hard clicked beneath the fabric.

Every security officer reached for his radio.

Spencer stood immediately.

"Nobody touch it."

The bomb technician who had just arrived rushed forward.

He gently scanned the bear.

The machine beeped once.

Then again.

Then flashed red.

"There is an electronic device inside."

Sophie's eyes grew wide.

"My teddy?"

The technician carefully opened the stitched seam.

Cotton stuffing spilled onto the table.

Then...

A tiny black object rolled into view.

Smaller than a coin.

The room froze.

The technician stared at it for several seconds before whispering,

"...GPS."

Nobody breathed.

A military-grade tracking device.

Hidden inside a five-year-old girl's favorite teddy bear.

Spencer looked like all the blood had drained from his body.

"They've been tracking her..."

Lena quietly added,

"Not just today."

"For however long that tracker has been inside."

The investigator checked the serial number.

Her expression changed instantly.

"Oh no..."

Spencer looked up.

"What?"

She swallowed.

"This tracker..."

"...was manufactured exclusively for government and military contracts."

The room exploded into frantic phone calls.

Security officers rushed outside.

Investigators opened laptops.

Someone contacted federal authorities.

But Spencer wasn't listening anymore.

He looked only at Sophie.

His little girl.

Who had spent months sleeping beside the toy that had betrayed her every location.

Sophie didn't understand why everyone looked scared.

She simply asked the only question that mattered to her.

"Is Mr. Cuddles sick?"

Elena knelt beside her.

She gently took the little girl's hand.

"No, sweetheart."

"What about him?"

"He was protecting you the best he could."

Sophie's eyes filled with tears.

"Can he come home?"

Before Elena could answer...

The office door burst open.

A breathless security guard rushed inside.

"Mr. Davis!"

"What now?"

"We've identified the person who placed the tracker inside the teddy bear."

Spencer's voice became dangerously quiet.

"Who?"

The guard hesitated.

Then slowly said the one name no one in the room expected.

May you like

"It was someone... from inside your own mansion."

End of Chapter 2.
