Chapter 5: "The Secret Tunnel Led to a Truth No Billionaire Could Survive—The Woman Walking Out Was Supposed to Be Dead"

No one breathed.

The hidden passage yawned open behind the century-old grandfather clock like the mouth of the mansion itself.

A cold draft drifted out, carrying the smell of damp stone and old earth.

Then—

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Closer.

Every security officer raised a weapon.

"Federal agents! Show your hands!"

No answer.

Only the echo of footsteps.

Spencer instinctively pulled Sophie behind him while Elena knelt beside the little girl.

"Close your eyes for me," Elena whispered.

"But—"

"Trust me."

Sophie nodded.

She buried her face against Elena's shoulder.

A shadow emerged.

Then another.

Finally, a woman stepped into the dim emergency lights.

She wore dark jeans, a black jacket, and hiking boots covered in mud.

Her long brown hair was streaked with gray, and a thin scar ran across her left cheek.

She slowly raised both hands.

"I'm not armed."

No one lowered a gun.

The lead FBI agent barked,

"Identify yourself."

The woman looked directly at Spencer.

Tears filled her eyes.

"I never thought I'd see you again."

Spencer stared.

His expression didn't change.

He had never seen her before.

"I don't know who you are."

The woman's face fell.

Then she whispered the one sentence that made Spencer's knees weaken.

"You still keep your wedding ring in your right pocket."

Spencer's hand instinctively flew to his suit jacket.

Inside was a plain gold ring.

Emily's wedding band.

He had carried it every day since the accident.

No one knew that.

No one.

Not even his closest friends.

"Who told you that?" Spencer demanded.

The woman's lips trembled.

"No one."

"I watched you do it."

The room fell silent.

The FBI agents exchanged uneasy glances.

The woman slowly reached into her jacket.

Ten rifles instantly aimed at her chest.

"Don't move!"

She froze.

"I'm only taking out a photograph."

"Slowly."

She obeyed.

A faded Polaroid appeared in her hand.

She placed it carefully on the marble floor.

Then stepped back.

One of the agents picked it up.

His eyes widened.

"Mr. Davis..."

Spencer took the photograph.

It showed himself and Emily laughing on a tiny beach during their honeymoon.

On the back, written in Emily's unmistakable handwriting, were the words:

"If we ever have a daughter, she'll have your smile."

Spencer's breathing became uneven.

That photograph had disappeared years ago.

Emily kept it locked inside a private wooden box in their bedroom.

No employee had ever seen it.

No visitor even knew it existed.

"Who are you?" Spencer whispered.

The woman answered quietly.

"My name is Rachel."

"I was Emily's younger sister."

Spencer looked as if someone had struck him.

"Emily didn't have a sister."

Rachel gave a sad smile.

"That's what your father-in-law wanted everyone to believe."

The room froze.

Rachel continued.

"My father was obsessed with appearances."

"When I was seventeen, I testified against him in court."

"He had been laundering money through his construction company."

"He made sure I disappeared from the family forever."

"He erased every record."

"Changed my identity."

"Told everyone I had died overseas."

She lowered her eyes.

"Emily never stopped looking for me."

Spencer searched his memory.

Emily had spoken often about feeling alone.

About wishing she had someone from her childhood.

But she had never mentioned a sister.

Because she hadn't been allowed to.

The FBI quickly verified Rachel's fingerprints.

Within minutes, the results returned.

The room became even quieter.

The DNA matched archived hospital records.

Rachel wasn't lying.

She really was Emily's sister.

Spencer struggled to process it.

"Why now?"

Rachel looked toward sleeping Sophie.

"Because they're running out of time."

"Who?"

"The people who killed Emily."

Every head turned.

Spencer's voice hardened.

"My wife died in an accident."

Rachel slowly shook her head.

"No."

"She was murdered."

The words echoed through the room.

"Murdered?"

Rachel nodded.

"The boat explosion was staged."

"They placed explosives beneath the engine compartment."

"Emily discovered financial records proving that someone inside Davis Global Systems had been secretly selling military navigation software on the black market."

The FBI agents exchanged alarmed looks.

One of them whispered,

"That would explain the military-grade tracker."

Rachel nodded.

"Exactly."

"They weren't after your money."

"They were after the encryption system Emily helped design."

Spencer frowned.

"Emily wasn't an engineer."

"No."

"But she was a mathematician."

The room grew silent.

Rachel smiled sadly.

"Everyone thought she was only the billionaire's wife."

"They never knew she created the encryption algorithm that protects nearly every Davis Global satellite."

Spencer's heart sank.

Emily had hidden that part of her career from the public to avoid attention.

Only a handful of executives knew the truth.

Someone inside the company had betrayed her.

Rachel reached into her backpack.

This time, the agents searched it first.

Inside were old journals.

Flash drives.

Legal documents.

And one sealed envelope.

Across the front, in elegant handwriting, were three words.

For Sophie.

Spencer stared at it.

Emily's handwriting.

Again.

His hands shook as he opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The paper had yellowed with age.

The first line stole the air from his lungs.

"My dearest Sophie... if you're reading this, I couldn't come home."

Tears rolled freely down Spencer's face.

Rachel quietly explained.

"Emily wrote several letters."

"One for every birthday."

"She hoped someday..."

"...someone trustworthy would find them."

Spencer looked up.

"Why didn't you bring these to me?"

Rachel's expression darkened.

"I tried."

"What do you mean?"

"Three times."

"The first person I contacted disappeared."

"The second died in what police called a car accident."

"And the third..."

She looked directly at Spencer.

"...worked for your security team."

The room froze.

Rachel finished softly.

"He called the people hunting us."

Before anyone could speak, every phone in the mansion vibrated at exactly the same moment.

Security officers.

FBI agents.

House staff.

Even Spencer's private phone.

One message.

One sender.

UNKNOWN.

Spencer opened it.

A single photograph filled the screen.

It had been taken less than a minute ago.

Inside this very mansion.

From the second-floor balcony.

The picture showed Spencer...

Holding Sophie.

Standing beside Elena.

At the bottom were nine chilling words.

"You're still too late. She's already one of ours."

Silence crashed over the room.

Then Elena slowly looked down at Sophie.

The little girl had fallen asleep against her shoulder...

Still hugging Mr. Cuddles.

Only—

Mr. Cuddles had been taken away by the FBI an hour earlier.

Elena's blood turned to ice.

She looked at the teddy bear in Sophie's arms.

It looked identical.

Same brown fur.

Same stitched smile.

Same blue ribbon.

But on its tiny left paw...

Someone had sewn a small silver star.

Elena had never seen that star before.

She whispered,

"Spencer..."

He turned.

Her voice was barely audible.

"That's not Sophie's teddy bear."

Everyone stared at the toy.

Then, almost simultaneously...

A tiny red light began blinking from inside its chest.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The bomb technician lunged forward.

May you like

"EVERYBODY GET BACK!"

End of Chapter 5.
