CHAPTER 4 — THE MAN WHO DIED TEN YEARS AGO WAS WAITING FOR HIM

The photo slipped from Ethan's trembling fingers.
It landed face-up on the marble floor.
Margaret gasped.
"No..."
"It can't be..."
The man standing behind the seven terrified children wore a black coat, leather gloves, and the same silver ring engraved with a phoenix.
Ethan would have recognized that ring anywhere.
Because ten years ago...
He watched that man die in an explosion.
Victor Kane.
The head of Blackwood Security.
The man Ethan had trusted more than anyone.
The man who betrayed his family...
...and supposedly paid for it with his life.
But Victor was alive.
Smiling.
Watching.
Waiting.
Sophia suddenly coughed.
Her eyes fluttered open.
"Victor..."
"He runs everything now."
Ethan knelt beside her.
"Where are they?"
She struggled to breathe.
"I don't know..."
"I only heard one name..."
"The Sanctuary."
The words sent a chill through Ethan's spine.
He had heard that name once before.
Years ago.
His father had forbidden anyone from mentioning it.
Whenever Ethan asked questions...
Everyone changed the subject.
The federal agents rushed toward Richard Ashford.
"You are under arrest."
Richard didn't resist.
Instead...
He laughed.
A calm...
Confident...
Terrifying laugh.
"You think you've won?"
He looked directly at Ethan.
"You still don't understand who you're fighting."
The lead agent pushed him toward the exit.
Richard smiled one last time.
"You've just declared war..."
"...against people richer than you."
Then he was gone.
Minutes later...
The ballroom emptied.
Broken glasses covered the floor.
Wedding decorations lay scattered everywhere.
News helicopters circled above the hotel.
Every television station in America interrupted its programming.
BILLIONAIRE EXPOSES WEDDING FRAUD LIVE.
Millions watched.
But Ethan didn't care.
He stared only at the photo.
Seven children.
One ghost.
One location.
The Sanctuary.
Back at Blackwood Tower...
His private investigation team assembled within minutes.
Dozens of screens lit up.
Maps.
Satellite images.
Financial records.
Facial recognition.
Nothing.
"The Sanctuary doesn't exist," one analyst said.
"No hospitals."
"No orphanages."
"No companies."
"No property."
"It's like someone erased it from history."
Another analyst suddenly froze.
"Sir..."
"I found something."
Everyone turned.
A grainy newspaper from thirty-two years earlier appeared on the screen.
The headline read:
FIRE DESTROYS ST. GABRIEL CHILDREN'S HOME — NO SURVIVORS FOUND.
Margaret stepped closer.
Then her face turned white.
"That's impossible."
Ethan looked at her.
"You know this place?"
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
"I worked there."
Silence.
"There were fifty-two children inside that night."
She whispered,
"Not one of them died."
Every person in the room stared at her.
"What do you mean?"
Margaret slowly sat down.
Her hands wouldn't stop shaking.
"Because the fire..."
"...was only a cover."
Ethan's heart pounded.
"A cover for what?"
Margaret looked into his eyes.
"For taking the children."
The room fell silent.
An analyst enlarged the old newspaper photograph.
Hidden in the background...
Almost impossible to notice...
Was a black limousine.
The license plate had been blurred.
But not enough.
One technician restored the image.
Everyone watched the computer process.
Five seconds...
Ten...
Fifteen...
Then the license number appeared.
The room froze.
The limousine wasn't registered to the Ashford family.
It wasn't registered to Victor Kane.
It wasn't registered to any corporation.
It belonged to one person.
Charles Blackwood.
Ethan's father.
The billionaire staggered backward.
"No..."
His voice cracked.
"My father died twenty years ago."
Margaret slowly closed her eyes.
"No, Ethan."
"He didn't die."
"He disappeared."
The words struck harder than any bullet.
Everything Ethan believed about his family...
Every memory...
Every story...
Every funeral...
Was built on a lie.
Before anyone could speak again—
Every monitor inside the command center suddenly turned black.
One by one.
Then a single video appeared.
Victor Kane looked straight into the camera.
Smiling.
"As always..."
"...you're asking the wrong questions, Ethan."
Behind him...
The seven kidnapped children sat tied to metal chairs.
Victor lifted a remote control.
"If you want answers..."
"Come to the Sanctuary."
"But remember..."
"If anyone follows you..."
"I'll bury these children beside your father."
The screen flickered.
Then Victor leaned closer to the camera and whispered the sentence that shattered Ethan's world forever.
"Ask your mother why she abandoned you the night you were born."
The transmission ended.
Margaret collapsed into tears.
And Ethan realized...
The woman he had just called "Mother"...
May you like
Was still hiding the darkest secret of all.
