CHAPTER 4 — "The Rooftop Stranger Vanished... But the Security Footage Revealed Someone Even More Terrifying"

Natalie didn't hesitate.
"Lock down the hotel."
Her voice echoed through the executive conference room with the same authority that had once stopped hostile takeovers and billion-dollar lawsuits.
Within seconds, Priya was already on the phone.
"Close every employee entrance."
"Notify hotel security."
"Nobody leaves until we identify the man on that rooftop."
The annual investor summit came to an abrupt halt.
Guests looked around in confusion as discreet security officers quietly appeared near elevators and exits.
No announcement was made.
No panic spread.
The hotel's wealthy guests simply assumed an important VIP required additional protection.
None of them knew the CEO wasn't protecting herself.
She was protecting her six-year-old daughter.
Meanwhile...
Two blocks away...
The man with the black umbrella calmly stepped into a waiting black SUV.
He removed a tiny wireless earpiece.
"They saw me."
A distorted voice answered through the speaker.
"I expected they would."
"The girl pointed directly at me."
Silence.
Then the voice asked,
"Did she recognize you?"
"No."
Another pause.
"But..."
The man glanced toward the hotel skyline.
"...she felt me."
Neither man spoke for several seconds.
Finally the voice returned.
"Accelerate the schedule."
The call disconnected.
The SUV disappeared into Chicago traffic.
Back at The Langham...
Natalie insisted on reviewing every security camera herself.
The hotel's security director led them into a monitoring room filled with dozens of screens.
Hallways.
Ballrooms.
Elevators.
Parking garages.
Loading docks.
Every corner of the building appeared somewhere on the glowing wall of monitors.
"Show me the maintenance corridor."
The technician rewound the footage.
11:19 a.m.
There was Iris.
Walking quietly out of the anteroom.
She wasn't frightened.
She wasn't wandering aimlessly.
She moved with purpose.
As though she already knew where she wanted to go.
Natalie frowned.
"Pause."
The technician froze the image.
"What is she looking at?"
Everyone leaned closer.
Iris wasn't looking down the hallway.
She was looking...
...at someone standing just outside the edge of the camera.
The person wasn't visible.
Only a shadow.
Natalie felt her stomach tighten.
"Continue."
The video rolled again.
Iris smiled.
Then nodded.
As though someone had spoken to her.
She began following the unseen figure.
Ten seconds later...
The shadow disappeared around the corner.
Iris followed.
The camera lost both of them.
Natalie stared at the screen.
"Zoom in."
The technician enhanced the footage.
The image became grainy.
Blurry.
Almost useless.
Almost.
Daniel suddenly stepped forward.
"Stop."
The technician froze the frame again.
Daniel pointed toward the lower corner.
"There."
At first nobody noticed it.
Then...
They all saw it.
A tiny reflection in the polished marble wall.
Not enough to show a face.
But enough to reveal...
...a black umbrella.
The same umbrella from the rooftop.
Natalie felt ice run through her veins.
"He was inside the hotel."
Another technician called from the opposite side of the room.
"Ma'am..."
"You should see this."
He opened footage from the executive lobby.
Time stamp:
9:03 a.m.
More than two hours before Iris disappeared.
The cameras showed Natalie greeting investors near the ballroom.
Journalists surrounded her.
Flashbulbs exploded.
Reporters shouted questions.
Everything looked normal.
Until Daniel noticed someone standing near a flower arrangement.
The man wore a navy business suit.
Perfectly ordinary.
Except...
He never once looked at Natalie.
He watched Iris.
For seven straight minutes.
Without blinking.
Without moving.
The technician fast-forwarded.
The crowd shifted.
Guests walked past.
Employees crossed the lobby.
The mysterious man never left.
He simply watched the little girl.
Finally...
At 9:10...
He smiled.
Not warmly.
Not kindly.
Like someone who had just confirmed something.
Then he walked away.
Natalie whispered,
"Can you zoom in on his face?"
The technician tried.
Nothing.
Every frame became distorted the moment the man's face filled the screen.
As if the file itself had been damaged.
The technician looked confused.
"That's impossible."
"Why?"
"The corruption only affects him."
Every other face remained perfectly clear.
Only his...
...couldn't be restored.
Daniel quietly stepped backward.
His breathing became heavier.
"I've seen this before."
Natalie turned.
"What do you mean?"
"The police surveillance footage."
"What surveillance footage?"
"The investigation after Emma died."
He swallowed hard.
"There was one man."
"The cameras couldn't identify him."
"The files kept corrupting."
"The detectives blamed old equipment."
Daniel slowly looked back toward the frozen image.
"I don't think it was the equipment."
The room fell silent.
Then Iris tugged gently on Natalie's sleeve.
"Mom?"
Natalie knelt immediately.
"What is it, sweetheart?"
"The umbrella man isn't bad."
Everyone looked at her.
Natalie frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"He isn't the scary one."
A cold feeling settled over the room.
"If he's not..."
Natalie whispered.
"...then who is?"
Iris slowly turned toward the wall of security monitors.
She lifted one tiny finger.
Pointing.
Not at the footage.
At someone standing behind them.
Every adult spun around instantly.
Only three people were there.
Natalie.
Daniel.
The hotel security director.
The director looked confused.
"What?"
Iris's face suddenly turned pale.
The color drained from her cheeks.
She took one frightened step backward.
Then another.
Her lips trembled.
For the first time that day...
Her voice disappeared again.
Natalie wrapped her arms around her.
"It's okay."
"Nobody will hurt you."
Iris clung tightly to her mother.
She tried to speak.
Nothing came out.
Only tears.
Daniel slowly walked toward the security director.
He stared at the man's identification badge.
Then his eyes widened.
"No..."
he whispered.
"That's impossible."
Natalie looked up.
"What?"
Daniel pointed toward the badge clipped to the director's jacket.
His hands were shaking violently.
"The employee number."
Natalie looked closer.
ID: 0417
Daniel's face had turned ghost white.
"My wife..."
he whispered.
"...called me the morning she died."
"She only managed to say one thing before the line went dead."
Natalie's heartbeat quickened.
"What did she say?"
Daniel looked directly at the security director.
His voice barely escaped his lips.
"'If anything happens to me... remember the number 0417.'"
At that exact moment...
The security director smiled.
A calm...
Almost friendly smile.
Then he quietly reached into his jacket pocket.
Not for a weapon.
Not for a phone.
But for an old silver butterfly pendant.
May you like
Exactly like the one Emma had worn in the photograph.
