CHAPTER 5 — "The Security Director Took Out Emma's Butterfly Pendant... Then the Little Girl Whispered Three Words That Exposed the Truth"

Nobody in the security room breathed.

The silver butterfly pendant rested quietly in the security director's palm, catching the light from dozens of surveillance monitors.

Daniel's face turned white.

His knees nearly gave way.

"No..."

he whispered.

"...where did you get that?"

The director looked down at the pendant before closing his fingers around it.

His expression wasn't threatening.

It was almost... sad.

"My name is Robert Gaines," he said calmly.

"I think we've frightened each other enough."

Natalie instinctively stepped in front of Iris.

"I asked you a question."

Robert slowly nodded.

"You deserve an answer."

Daniel took one step forward.

"My wife's necklace."

Robert looked directly into his eyes.

"Yes."

"It belonged to Emma."

The room exploded.

Daniel lunged across the floor, grabbing Robert by the front of his suit.

"You lied!"

"You told the police you never met her!"

"You testified she was alone on that roof!"

Hotel guards rushed forward, pulling Daniel away before the situation turned violent.

Robert never fought back.

He simply waited until Daniel calmed enough to stand on his own.

Then he quietly said,

"I lied because someone made sure I had no choice."

Silence fell over the room.

Natalie narrowed her eyes.

"Who?"

Robert looked toward the security cameras lining the wall.

"The same people who have been watching your daughter."

Natalie felt the air leave her lungs.

"You knew about Iris?"

Robert nodded.

"I've known about her since the day she was born."

Daniel stared at him in disbelief.

"What does a six-year-old little girl have to do with Emma?"

Robert hesitated.

For the first time, fear appeared in his eyes.

"I hoped..."

"...the answer would die with Emma."

Natalie's voice became sharp.

"Stop speaking in riddles."

"If my daughter is in danger, tell me the truth."

Robert closed his eyes.

"I can't tell you everything."

"Not here."

"Not while the cameras are recording."

He looked toward the ceiling.

Natalie followed his gaze.

Tiny black security cameras blinked silently from every corner of the room.

Robert lowered his voice.

"They're listening."

Natalie didn't waste another second.

She pulled the power cable from the nearest monitor.

The screen went black.

Daniel understood immediately.

He unplugged another.

Then another.

Within a minute, every surveillance monitor in the room had gone dark.

Only emergency lighting remained.

The silence felt unnatural.

Robert finally exhaled.

"Thank you."

He reached into his wallet.

Not for money.

For a folded piece of yellowed paper.

The edges were worn from years of being opened and closed.

"I've carried this for five years."

He handed it to Natalie.

She unfolded it carefully.

It wasn't a letter.

It was the last page of Emma's notebook.

Across the page, written in hurried handwriting, were only two sentences.

If anything happens to me, don't let them find the child.

She hears what the rest of us cannot.

Natalie's hands began to shake.

"The child?"

Robert slowly looked toward Iris.

"Emma wasn't writing about her own daughter."

Daniel frowned.

"We never had children."

Robert nodded.

"I know."

He pointed gently toward Iris.

"She meant her."

The room fell silent.

Natalie stared at the page.

"That's impossible."

"Emma died before Iris was born."

"So how could she..."

Robert answered softly.

"Because Emma met you."

Natalie looked up so quickly the notebook slipped from her fingers.

"What?"

"You don't remember."

"I never met your wife."

"You did."

"Seven years ago."

Natalie's heartbeat thundered in her ears.

Seven years earlier...

Before Meridian Capital.

Before becoming CEO.

Before Iris.

Before almost everything.

Robert continued quietly.

"You were in Boston."

"You volunteered for one weekend at St. Catherine's Children's Hospital."

Natalie's eyes widened.

Fragments of memory returned.

Children.

Art classes.

Paper butterflies hanging from the ceiling.

A young nurse with bright eyes...

always wearing a silver butterfly necklace.

Emma.

Natalie whispered,

"...the art therapist."

Robert nodded.

"Yes."

"You spent two afternoons together."

"You talked about children."

"You told Emma that one day, if you ever became a mother..."

"...you hoped your child would always keep her kindness."

Natalie could barely breathe.

She remembered.

Only faintly.

But she remembered.

Daniel looked completely stunned.

"Emma never told me."

Robert smiled sadly.

"She couldn't."

"Because after meeting Natalie..."

"...Emma discovered something."

Daniel stepped closer.

"What?"

Robert hesitated.

His lips parted.

Before he could answer—

The emergency lights suddenly went out.

Total darkness swallowed the room.

Someone screamed in the hallway.

Then came the sound of running footsteps.

A loud metallic crash echoed through the corridor.

The backup generator failed.

Only faint daylight leaked through the conference room windows.

Natalie immediately reached for Iris.

"Iris!"

"I'm here, Mommy."

Her tiny hand found Natalie's.

Safe.

For one brief moment.

Then...

A man's voice echoed from somewhere inside the darkness.

Calm.

Cold.

Almost amused.

"She found the truth much sooner than Emma did."

Every adult froze.

The voice continued.

"That's disappointing."

Daniel spun toward the sound.

"Who's there?"

No answer.

Only footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Walking somewhere inside the room.

But no one could see him.

Natalie grabbed the emergency flashlight from the wall and switched it on.

The narrow beam swept across empty chairs.

The conference table.

The doorway.

Nothing.

Then the light reached the far wall.

Written across the glass window...

In fresh red marker...

Were six chilling words.

SHE WAS NEVER THE TARGET.

Before anyone could react...

Another sentence slowly appeared beneath it.

As if someone had written it only seconds earlier.

YOU WERE.

The flashlight slipped from Natalie's hand.

It hit the floor with a sharp crack.

At that exact moment...

Iris looked into the darkness and quietly spoke the first full sentence she had said since the lights went out.

"No..."

she whispered.

May you like

"He's standing behind Mommy."
