CHAPTER 2: THE MEN AT THE DOOR

The three knocks echoed through the mansion like gunshots.
BANG.
BANG.
BANG.
No one moved.
Mauricio frowned.
Camila slowly lowered her coffee mug.
Leonor stopped stuffing clothes into a garbage bag.
Even Ramiro put down the box in his hands.
Only Valeria remained calm.
She took another sip of coffee.
Then she smiled.
A small, almost invisible smile.
Mauricio noticed it immediately.
"What are you smiling at?"
She looked at him.
"Open the door."
His face darkened.
"This is my house. I decide who comes in."
Valeria raised an eyebrow.
"Is it?"
For a moment, something strange flashed in Mauricio's eyes.
Then the doorbell rang again.
This time it didn't stop.
DING-DONG. DING-DONG. DING-DONG.
Whoever was outside was impatient.
Mauricio stormed toward the entrance.
"I swear, if this is one of your stupid games—"
He pulled the door open.
And froze.
Three people stood outside.
A man in a dark gray suit.
Another carrying a briefcase.
And behind them…
two police officers.
Nobody spoke.
The man in the gray suit smiled politely.
"Good morning. Are you Mr. Mauricio Vega?"
Mauricio swallowed.
"Y-yes."
The man pulled an identification card from his jacket.
"I'm Attorney Gabriel Ortega."
He handed over a document.
"We're here regarding the transfer of one hundred and fifty thousand pesos made yesterday morning."
The color drained from Mauricio's face.
"What… what about it?"
Gabriel's smile disappeared.
"May we come in?"
"No."
The answer came too quickly.
Too nervously.
Behind him, Valeria quietly placed her cup on the kitchen counter.
"Let them in."
Mauricio turned.
His eyes were suddenly full of anger.
"You knew about this?"
She didn't answer.
The lawyer stepped forward.
"I'm afraid this matter concerns the entire household."
The two officers entered.
Camila's face turned pale.
Leonor whispered, "Mauricio… what's happening?"
He didn't answer.
Because he didn't know.
Not anymore.
The game was slipping from his hands.
A few moments later everyone was gathered in the living room.
The rain outside had become heavier.
The atmosphere inside was worse.
Gabriel opened his briefcase and removed several documents.
Then he looked directly at Mauricio.
"Yesterday morning, your wife transferred one hundred and fifty thousand pesos into an account you provided."
Mauricio forced a smile.
"That's right. It was to pay a business debt."
The lawyer nodded.
"Interesting."
He placed a folder on the table.
"Because the account in question doesn't belong to any creditor."
Silence.
"It belongs to a private company registered two weeks ago."
Another document.
"The company has only two shareholders."
Another paper.
"Mr. Mauricio Vega…"
He looked up.
"And Ms. Camila Fuentes."
The room exploded.
"What?!" Leonor screamed.
Camila nearly dropped her cup.
Ramiro's mouth fell open.
Mauricio stood up.
"This is ridiculous!"
Gabriel ignored him.
"The money was transferred into a shell company designed to move assets abroad."
He turned another page.
"The company already has a purchased apartment in Madrid and two plane tickets for next month."
Nobody breathed.
Camila's face became as white as paper.
Leonor slowly looked at her son.
"Madrid?"
Mauricio said nothing.
The older woman's voice trembled.
"Mauricio… what is he talking about?"
Nothing.
Then Gabriel added one final sentence.
"The investigation suggests that Mr. Vega intended to leave Mexico permanently."
Leonor's hands began shaking.
"And… abandon all outstanding financial obligations here."
Her face changed.
She suddenly understood.
The debts.
The loans.
The lies.
Her son hadn't planned to save the family.
He had planned to escape.
Without them.
Without anyone.
And with his mistress.
"Mauricio…" she whispered.
He finally spoke.
"It's not what it looks like."
Camila looked at him in horror.
"Not what it looks like?"
She stood up.
"You said we were starting a new life together!"
He looked at her.
"I can explain—"
"You told me your wife was stealing your money!"
"I had to say something!"
"You said your parents would come with us!"
Silence.
Camila's eyes widened.
"You weren't taking them either?"
Leonor's face turned gray.
"What…?"
Mauricio looked trapped.
Sweat rolled down his forehead.
For the first time that morning…
he looked afraid.
Then Gabriel spoke again.
"Actually, this is only part of the reason we're here."
Everyone looked at him.
He opened another folder.
"Mrs. Valeria Ríos hired our firm three months ago."
Mauricio's head snapped toward his wife.
"What?"
Gabriel smiled slightly.
"She suspected financial fraud."
He pulled out several photographs.
Bank statements.
Invoices.
Contracts.
Voice recordings.
One by one he placed them on the table.
Mauricio stared at them.
And slowly…
his face lost all color.
"No…"
Valeria finally spoke.
Her voice was calm.
"You should look at page twelve."
His trembling hands turned the pages.
Then he saw it.
A transcript.
His own words.
As soon as she pays the debt, I'll divorce her. The house will be ours.
His knees nearly gave out.
"You… recorded me?"
She nodded.
"You forged my signature."
"You stole company money."
"You created fake debts."
"You planned to run away."
Each sentence was another knife.
And then she said the one thing that truly terrified him.
"And I know who helped you."
Mauricio's eyes widened.
Slowly, Valeria looked toward Camila.
The young woman took a step backward.
Then another.
"I… I didn't know everything."
"You knew enough."
Camila began shaking.
"Mauricio said—"
"Don't," Mauricio hissed.
She looked at him.
And suddenly she realized something.
He had lied to her too.
Just like he lied to everyone.
She wasn't his partner.
She was simply another victim.
Another useful person.
Exactly like Valeria.
Tears filled her eyes.
"You said you loved me."
He said nothing.
Because there was nothing left to say.
Then the lawyer closed the final folder.
"Mr. Vega, considering the evidence, criminal charges are being prepared."
The words hit the room like thunder.
Criminal charges.
Prison.
Fraud.
Forgery.
Embezzlement.
Everything was falling apart.
Mauricio slowly turned toward Valeria.
She was sitting calmly in the armchair.
Watching.
Waiting.
She looked more beautiful than he had ever seen her.
And suddenly…
he realized something horrifying.
She had known.
All of it.
For months.
The transfer.
The mistress.
The divorce.
The betrayal.
Everything.
And she had let him continue.
She had let him believe he was winning.
Because she wasn't paying his debt.
She was building his prison.
"Valeria…" he whispered.
She looked at him.
For the first time that morning…
he was the one who looked helpless.
And she was the one holding all the power.
Then she smiled.
A cold, devastating smile.
"You wanted me out of the house, Mauricio."
She stood up.
Walked slowly toward him.
And whispered:
"Now you'll be lucky if you don't lose your freedom too."
At that exact moment…
one of the police officers stepped forward.
May you like
And pulled a pair of handcuffs from his belt.
