CHAPTER 4: THE SECRET OF HER FATHER'S COMPANY

The room fell into a terrifying silence.
Rain pounded against the windows.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Valeria stared at her father-in-law.
"Ramiro…" she whispered. "What is he talking about?"
The older man looked twenty years older in that moment.
His hands trembled.
"Please…" he said softly. "Not today."
"Today?" Mauricio laughed bitterly. "No, today is perfect."
The police officer frowned.
"Mr. Vega, enough."
But Mauricio ignored him.
Everything in his life was collapsing, and he wanted someone else to fall with him.
He pointed at Ramiro.
"Tell her the truth."
Ramiro closed his eyes.
"Tell her who owns this house."
"Stop."
"Tell her what happened after her father died."
"STOP!"
The shout echoed through the mansion.
Everyone froze.
It was the first time Valeria had ever heard her father-in-law scream.
Tears filled his eyes.
For years, Ramiro had been the calm one.
The quiet one.
The man who stayed in the background.
But now…
he looked terrified.
Valeria's heart pounded.
"What happened after my father died?"
No answer.
"Ramiro… answer me."
The old man slowly looked at her.
And for the first time in years…
she saw guilt in his eyes.
A terrible, unbearable guilt.
"You deserve to know," he whispered.
Mauricio folded his arms.
"Finally."
Leonor looked confused.
