Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Little Girl

Daniel’s face turned ice-cold.

“Emily,” he said slowly, holding up the photograph, “why does this child have a picture of you calling her your little girl?”

Emily’s hands shook.

Before she could answer, the woman in the black suit stepped forward.

“This is emotional manipulation,” she snapped. “The child stole that photo. She has behavioral problems.”

But Lily hid behind Emily and whispered:

“She’s lying. They told me you were dead.”

The entire ballroom gasped.

Emily’s heart stopped.

“What did you say?”

Lily pulled out a folded envelope from her coat. It was dirty, torn, and stamped with the name of the foster facility.

Inside was a document.

A fake death certificate.

Emily Carter’s name was printed on it.

For four years, Lily had believed the only woman who ever loved her had died.

Emily turned slowly toward the woman in black.

“Who gave her this?”

The woman’s face went pale.

Daniel grabbed Emily’s arm.

“Enough. This wedding is becoming a circus.”

Emily looked at his hand on her wrist.

For the first time that day, she saw something strange in his eyes.

Not confusion.

Not heartbreak.

Fear.

Then Lily pointed at Daniel.

“It was him.”

The room went silent.

Emily could barely breathe.

Lily’s voice trembled.

“I saw him at the facility last week. He gave the lady money and told her to keep me away from the wedding.”

Daniel’s charming mask cracked.

“That’s ridiculous.”

But the woman in black suddenly backed away.

Emily stepped closer to Daniel.

“How did you know Lily existed?”

Daniel said nothing.

Then Lily handed Emily one final thing.

A small recording device.

“I took this from her office,” Lily whispered.

Emily pressed play.

Daniel’s voice filled the ballroom.

“Once I marry Emily, her inheritance transfers into the family trust. No child, no scandal, no old orphanage story can ruin this.”

Guests screamed.

Emily stared at the man she almost married.

The truth hit her like a knife.

Daniel had never loved her.

He had researched her past, found Lily, paid people to hide the child, and planned to marry Emily for her inheritance.

Emily slowly removed her veil.

Then her engagement ring.

And dropped it at Daniel’s feet.

“You didn’t just lose a bride,” she said. “You lost the one woman who could have saved you.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You think anyone here will believe a child?”

At that moment, the ballroom doors opened again.

Two police officers walked in.

Behind them stood an elderly woman in a navy suit.

Emily’s lawyer.

She raised a folder and said:

“Actually, we believe everything. We’ve been investigating Mr. Foster for three months.”

Daniel’s face collapsed.

The guests watched in shock as the groom was handcuffed in front of the altar.

But the biggest surprise came when Lily looked up at Emily and asked:

“Does this mean you’re still my mommy?”

Emily broke down crying.

She knelt, hugged Lily tightly, and whispered:

“No, sweetheart…”

Lily’s face fell.

Then Emily smiled through her tears.

“Now I’m going to be your real mother.”

And while Daniel was dragged out of his own wedding…

Emily walked down the aisle again.

Not as a bride.

May you like

But as a woman who had finally found the daughter her heart never stopped searching for.
