Chapter 5: The Phone Call That Changed Everything

Emily's heart pounded as she stared at her phone.

The call had lasted only six seconds.

But one sentence echoed in her mind.

"It's Elizabeth... They're coming."

Then the line went dead.

Richard immediately grabbed the phone.

"We can trace it."

Within minutes, his laptop displayed the result.

The signal came from an abandoned hospital nearly eighty miles away.

Emily didn't hesitate.

"I'm going."

Richard looked at her seriously.

"If this is a trap, we may not come back."

Emily glanced at Lily, who was sleeping peacefully in the back seat of Richard's SUV.

"I've spent twenty-six years living inside someone else's lies."

"I'm done running."

Three hours later...

The abandoned hospital stood alone on the edge of a forgotten town.

Broken windows.

Rusted gates.

No electricity.

It had officially closed nearly fifteen years earlier.

Yet...

Lights flickered on the third floor.

Richard drew his flashlight.

"Someone's inside."

They climbed the cracked staircase carefully.

The silence felt unnatural.

Every step echoed through the empty halls.

Then...

A faint voice.

"Emily..."

She froze.

"I know that voice."

It was Elizabeth.

Emily ran toward the sound.

At the end of the hallway...

A steel door stood slightly open.

She pushed it.

Inside sat a woman tied to a chair.

Bruised.

Exhausted.

But unmistakable.

Elizabeth.

For a long moment...

Neither sister spoke.

They simply stared at each other.

Like two reflections meeting for the first time.

Then Elizabeth burst into tears.

"You actually found me."

Emily rushed forward and untied her.

The sisters embraced tightly.

Twenty-six years of stolen memories disappeared in a single hug.

"I thought you were dead," Emily whispered.

Elizabeth shook her head.

"They wanted you to think that."

Richard interrupted.

"We have to leave. Now."

Elizabeth's expression changed instantly.

"No."

"It's already too late."

She pointed toward the hallway.

"They're here."

The lights suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Then came footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Deliberate.

One pair.

Then another.

Then dozens.

Flashlights filled the corridor.

Masked men surrounded the room.

A tall man wearing black gloves stepped forward.

He smiled calmly.

"So..."

"The Carter sisters have finally reunited."

Emily stepped in front of Elizabeth.

"Who are you?"

The man removed his leather gloves.

Richard's face turned white.

"No..."

"It can't be."

Emily looked between them.

"You know him?"

Richard nodded slowly.

"I arrested him eighteen years ago."

"He died in prison."

The stranger smiled.

"That's what everyone believes."

He reached into his pocket and placed a gold badge on the floor.

The badge belonged to the FBI.

"My name..."

"...is Director Nathan Cole."

Emily stared in disbelief.

"The FBI Director?"

Nathan laughed quietly.

"The real one."

"For twenty years, I've been building an organization hidden inside the government."

Elizabeth grabbed Emily's arm.

"He trafficked children."

"He sold identities."

"He erased families."

"And when we discovered the truth..."

"He hunted us."

Nathan slowly applauded.

"Very impressive."

"But you're still missing the biggest secret."

He looked directly at Lily, who had quietly followed Emily into the room without anyone noticing.

His smile widened.

"I wasn't looking for Emily."

"I wasn't looking for Elizabeth."

"I've always been looking..."

"...for the child."

Emily instinctively pulled Lily behind her.

Nathan's eyes filled with excitement.

"Do you really think she ended up in your life by accident?"

Emily's blood ran cold.

"What are you talking about?"

Nathan reached into his briefcase and tossed a thick confidential file onto the floor.

Across the front, stamped in bold red letters, were the words:

PROJECT LILAC

Below it...

A photograph.

Taken six years earlier.

It showed baby Lily...

...surrounded by scientists wearing laboratory coats.

Emily slowly opened the first page.

Her hands began to shake uncontrollably.

The first line read:

"Subject L-17 is the only surviving child of the Carter bloodline experiment."

Emily looked at Lily.

Lily looked back with frightened eyes.

And for the first time...

Emily realized the little girl she had sworn to protect wasn't just an orphan.

She was the center of a secret so dangerous...

May you like

People had been willing to kill for it for years.
