Chapter 2 - The Morning After the Storm

The apartment smelled of antiseptic, copper, and damp wool. By 5:00 AM, the bleeding had stopped completely. Clara wiped a line of sweat from her forehead with the back of her forearm, staring down at her handiwork. The vertical sutures were neat, tight, and professional, mimicking the precision of an elite trauma surgeon.
Dominic was still sitting on the laminate kitchen counter, shirtless, his muscular upper body crisscrossed with older, faded scars that told a violent, silent history. His head was tipped back against the tiled wall, his breathing deep and even. For a moment, Clara thought he had finally passed out from exhaustion.
Then, his dark eyes snapped open. They were clear, calculating, and intensely focused.
"You have steady hands," he said, his voice dropping the raw gravel of pain for a smooth, low register that sent a shiver down Clara's spine. "In my line of work, people with steady hands are worth a fortune."
"In my line of work, people who bleed out in alleys are supposed to go to jail or the morgue," Clara retorted, her voice shaking slightly as she tossed a blood-soaked gauze pad into the trash can. "You're lucky I didn't call the authorities, Mr. Dominic."
"Call me Dominic," he corrected gently, sliding off the counter with a slight wince. He tested his core muscles, rolling his shoulders back. The movement pulled the stitches tight, but his face didn't betray a flicker of pain. "And as for the authorities... calling them would have been a catastrophic mistake for both of us."
"For both of us?" Clara scoffed, crossing her arms. "I just saved your life. What could the police possibly do to me?"
Dominic reached into the ruined pocket of his charcoal trousers, pulling out a heavy, platinum signet ring engraved with a stylized, snarling wolf head. He slipped it onto his pinky finger, his gaze locking onto hers with a chilling gravity.
"The men who ambushed me tonight aren't street thugs, Clara. They are a rival faction from the South End. If they tracked me to this alley, they are tracking my blood trail. They know someone patched me up. And if the police find out a notorious criminal was treated in a Beacon Hill apartment, your name goes into public records. Within twenty-four hours, my enemies would find you, tear this apartment apart, and torture you to find out where I went."
The air in the room seemed to freeze. Clara stared at him, the reality of what she had done finally crashing over her. "Who... who are you?"
May you like
Dominic stepped closer. Despite his injury, he towered over her, radiating an aura of absolute, terrifying power.
"My name is Dominic Vane," he said quietly. "And you just stitched up the man who owns this city."
