CHAPTER 3: THE SECRET THEIR FATHER TOOK TO HIS GRAVE WAS NEVER AN ACCIDENT

The entire square fell silent.

Michael slowly turned toward his mother.

"Mom..."

"What did Vanessa mean?"

Evelyn couldn't answer.

Her hands trembled so violently that the old envelope slipped from her fingers.

The police officers exchanged uneasy glances.

Vanessa smiled through her tears.

"Go ahead, Evelyn."

"Tell him why Richard never made it home that night."

Michael felt his heart pounding.

For years, he had believed his father died in a tragic car accident during a business trip.

Everyone had.

That was the official story.

Evelyn finally whispered,

"It wasn't supposed to happen..."

Michael stared at her.

"What wasn't supposed to happen?"

Before she could answer, another voice interrupted.

"Because it wasn't an accident."

Everyone turned.

An elderly man stepped out of the crowd carrying a weathered leather briefcase.

He walked with a cane, but his eyes were sharp.

Evelyn gasped.

"Frank?"

Michael's jaw dropped.

"Uncle Frank?"

The man nodded slowly.

"I've stayed silent for twenty years."

"But I can't stay silent anymore."

He placed the briefcase on the bench and unlocked it.

Inside were old newspaper clippings...

Police reports...

Photographs...

And a small VHS tape labeled:

HIGHWAY 16 – OCTOBER 12.

Michael frowned.

"What is this?"

Frank looked him straight in the eye.

"I was with your father that night."

The crowd gasped.

"You were?"

Frank nodded.

"We were driving home after meeting with federal investigators."

"Richard had uncovered millions of dollars stolen from the company."

"He was preparing to expose everyone involved."

Vanessa's confident smile slowly disappeared.

Frank continued.

"Someone knew."

"They followed us."

"They forced our car off the highway."

Michael felt his knees weaken.

"My father was murdered?"

Frank lowered his head.

"I've lived with that guilt every day."

"I survived."

"Your father didn't."

The police chief immediately stepped forward.

"Mr. Brooks..."

"Why didn't you come forward?"

Frank sighed.

"Because they threatened my family."

"They said Michael would be next."

The square became completely silent.

Vanessa suddenly shouted,

"He's lying!"

But Frank calmly removed one final document.

It was a list of names.

Some were crossed out.

One remained circled in red.

RICHARD BROOKS.

At the bottom...

A signature.

Not Vanessa's.

Not Richard's.

Just two initials.

D.H.

The police chief stared at the page.

His expression changed instantly.

"Oh my God..."

He grabbed his radio.

"Call headquarters."

"Reopen the Brooks homicide investigation."

"Immediately."

Michael looked at Vanessa.

"You knew."

She backed away.

"I never wanted anyone to die!"

"I only knew about the money!"

"I swear!"

Just then...

One detective received a phone call.

His face turned pale.

"What?"

He slowly lowered the phone.

"The evidence warehouse..."

"It was broken into thirty minutes ago."

"The original crash files..."

"They're gone."

Frank whispered,

"They've found us."

Before anyone could react...

A black sedan accelerated toward the square.

Its engine roared.

People screamed and scattered.

The car wasn't trying to escape.

It was heading straight...

...for Frank.

And behind the wheel...

Michael recognized a face from an old family photograph.

A man everyone believed had died twenty years earlier.

Richard Brooks' former business partner.

The man who vanished the same night Richard was killed.

He was alive.

May you like

And he had just come back to silence the last witness forever.
