CHAPTER 4: THE MAN EVERYONE THOUGHT WAS DEAD STEPPED OUT OF THE CAR... WITH A GUN

The black sedan roared across the square.
People screamed.
Children cried.
The car didn't slow down.
It was heading straight for Frank.
At the last second, Michael threw himself at his uncle.
The two men crashed onto the pavement.
The sedan missed them by inches before slamming into a stone fountain.
Smoke poured from the twisted hood.
For a moment...
Everything was silent.
Then...
The driver's door slowly opened.
A tall man in a charcoal suit stepped out, brushing dust from his jacket as if nothing had happened.
His hair was gray.
His face carried an old scar across one cheek.
Evelyn froze.
"No..."
"It can't be."
Frank whispered with terror in his voice.
"David Harper..."
The name sent a chill through every officer standing in the square.
Twenty years earlier, David Harper had officially died in a yacht explosion.
His body was never recovered.
The case was closed.
Now...
He stood only a few feet away.
Alive.
Smiling.
"You've all been looking for a ghost," he said calmly.
"And ghosts are very difficult to arrest."
The police drew their weapons.
"Don't move!"
David simply laughed.
"You still think this ends with me?"
He slowly reached into his jacket.
Michael instinctively stepped in front of Evelyn and the girls.
Everyone expected a gun.
Instead...
David pulled out a thick manila folder.
He tossed it onto the pavement.
It burst open.
Hundreds of photographs scattered across the square.
Old surveillance photos.
Bank records.
Secret meetings.
One picture made Michael stop breathing.
It showed Vanessa...
Standing beside David Harper...
Nineteen years ago.
Long before she had ever "accidentally" met Michael.
His entire marriage...
Had been planned.
Vanessa collapsed onto her knees.
"No..."
"Please don't show him."
David smiled.
"You were never my partner."
"You were my investment."
Michael stared at the photographs in disbelief.
"You married me..."
"...because of my family?"
Vanessa sobbed uncontrollably.
"At first... yes."
"But then I fell in love with you."
David interrupted with a cold laugh.
"No, Vanessa."
"You fell in love with the fortune."
The officers moved closer.
David didn't resist.
Instead, he looked directly at Michael.
"You still don't understand."
"Your father's company..."
"...was never the real target."
Frank's face suddenly turned white.
"Don't tell him..."
David ignored him.
"The billions were only a distraction."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small silver key.
"This..."
"...opens something worth far more than money."
He held the key up for everyone to see.
"It's the key to Vault 17."
"The vault your father built beneath the original Brooks headquarters."
Michael frowned.
"What is inside?"
David smiled.
"Proof."
"Proof powerful enough to destroy politicians..."
"...judges..."
"...and some of the richest families in America."
The police chief stepped forward.
"Take him into custody."
But David raised one finger.
"If you arrest me before opening that vault..."
"The truth dies with me."
The officers hesitated.
Then...
A deafening explosion echoed from downtown.
Everyone turned.
A massive cloud of black smoke rose into the sky.
One detective answered his radio.
His face turned pale.
"Sir..."
"The old Brooks headquarters..."
"It's on fire."
David Harper smiled.
"You're already too late."
But before he could finish speaking...
Lily tugged on Evelyn's sleeve.
"Grandma..."
"I've seen that silver key before."
Every head turned toward the little girl.
She pointed at the family photo album lying on the ground.
"It isn't the only one."
"Dad gave me another key when I was five."
"He told me..."
"'Never let Mommy find it.'"
Michael's heart nearly stopped.
His late father had known.
He had trusted his youngest daughter...
Not the adults.
And somewhere...
Hidden in plain sight for twenty years...
A second key was waiting.

The race to uncover the truth had only just begun.
