Chapter 4 - THE PUPPET MASTER’S GALA

“The cameras flashed as my beautiful fiancée led me onto the stage in my wheelchair. She thought she was presenting her trophy—she didn't know she was walking into a trap.”
The Grand Ballroom of the Seattle Westin was a sea of glittering diamonds, expensive champagne, and high-society whispers. Over five hundred of the city’s most influential figures, along with the entire board of Whitmore Systems and national business media, were in attendance.
Sophia looked breathtaking in a floor-length emerald green gown. She pushed Nathan’s wheelchair through the crowd, smiling radiantly, nodding to reporters.
"Look at her," Nathan heard a board member whisper. "So devoted. She’s a saint."
Julian Croft met them near the stage, looking sharp in a classic tuxedo. He leaned down and patted Nathan’s shoulder. "How are you holding up, buddy? Big night."
"I'm ready, Julian," Nathan said, his voice weak and raspy. "I just want this to be over."
"It will be soon," Julian said, sharing a quick, highly charged look with Sophia. Nathan saw it. It was the look of two predators about to feast on their prey.
At 9:00 PM, the chime of crystal glasses echoed through the hall. Julian stepped up to the microphone on the stage.
"Ladies and gentlemen, members of the board, and honored guests," Julian began, his voice booming with artificial warmth. "Six months ago, our founder and my dear friend, Nathan Whitmore, suffered a tragic accident. Since then, we have watched him battle his illness with incredible courage. But the physical toll has been immense."
The crowd went silent. Sophia stepped onto the stage, pulling Nathan's wheelchair up the ramp to the center of the platform. The spotlight hit them, bright and blinding.
"As Nathan’s partner in both life and business," Julian continued, "Sophia Lane has stood by him through the darkest hours. Because Nathan’s health must be his primary focus, he has decided tonight to officially step down as CEO and Chairman of Whitmore Systems."
A collective murmur swept through the room.
"Nathan has decided to transfer his full voting shares and executive power of attorney to Sophia, who will act as trustee of the Whitmore legacy, with myself stepping in as CEO to ensure continuity."
A legal assistant walked onto the stage, carrying a leather binder containing the official transfer documents. Sophia took a silver pen from her clutch, her hands slightly trembling with excitement. She placed the document on a small podium in front of Nathan’s wheelchair.
"Just sign here, my love," Sophia whispered, her voice cracking with fake emotion for the benefit of the cameras. "Let me carry the weight for you."
Nathan looked at the paper. He looked at the silver pen.
He looked up at Julian, who was nodding encouragingly, a greedy grin barely concealed on his face.
Nathan picked up the pen. He leaned forward, pretending to sign.
Then, he dropped the pen.
It rolled off the podium and fell to the stage floor.
"Oh, let me get that for you, darling," Sophia said quickly, bending down to retrieve it.
"Don't bother," Nathan said.
His voice was no longer weak. It was clear, resonant, and echoed through the microphone on the podium.
Sophia paused, looking up at him from her knees.
Nathan Whitmore took a deep breath. He placed both hands on the armrests of his wheelchair.
And then, in front of five hundred people, thirty television cameras, and the entire board of his company, Nathan stood up.
He didn't shake. He didn't wobble. He stood tall, shoulders back, towering over his fiancée.
The entire ballroom gasped. A deafening silence fell over the crowd. Camera shutters clicked in a frantic, blinding frenzy.
"Nathan?" Sophia stammered, her face turning pale. "What... what are you doing? This is a miracle, but you shouldn't be standing—"
"It's not a miracle, Sophia," Nathan said, stepping away from the wheelchair. He walked toward the main microphone, his stride perfectly even and powerful. "It's chemistry."
Julian rushed forward, his face flushed with panic. "Nathan, you're not well! You're having a manic episode! Security, help Mr. Whitmore back to his seat—"
"Stand down, Julian," Nathan barked.
The security guards hesitated, recognizing the absolute authority in the founder's voice.
"For the past six months," Nathan addressed the crowd, his voice booming, "I have been slowly paralyzed. Not by my accident, but by a systematic poisoning orchestrated by my fiancée, Sophia Lane, and my COO, Julian Croft."
Uproar exploded in the ballroom. Reporters began shouting.
"This is madness! You have no proof!" Sophia shrieked, her elegant facade cracking into pure, ugly terror.
"I have Marcus Vance's final legacy," Nathan said, pointing to the massive projection screen behind the stage.

Suddenly, the screen flickered to life. Instead of the Whitmore Systems corporate logo, it displayed a detailed chemical analysis sheet, wire transfer receipts from Julian's offshore accounts, and a video clip of Sophia purchasing illegal restricted toxins from a black-market pharmaceutical distributor.
"No!" Julian yelled, lunging toward the control booth, but he was immediately blocked by two federal agents who stepped out from the wings of the stage.
