Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Betrayal: Who Was the Real Puppet Master?

Sarah didn't scream. She didn't beg.

Instead, she stood up straight, her face surprisingly calm in the beam of his flashlight.

"You really are a fool, Marcus," she said softly. "You always thought you were the smartest man in the room. You thought you were the one pulling the strings."

Marcus paused, his arm still raised. "What are you talking about?"

"Who do you think suggested the yacht for our anniversary?" Sarah asked, her voice steady. "Who do you think bought the waterproof phone case for me last Christmas?"

Marcus blinked, his mind struggling to connect the dots. "I... I bought that."

"No," Sarah said, a cold, mocking smile appearing on her lips. "Elena bought it. She gave it to you to give to me. She told you it would be a 'nice touch' for my maternity outfits."

Marcus’s brow furrowed. "So what?"

"Elena and I have been talking for over a year, Marcus," Sarah revealed.

The room seemed to drop another ten degrees.

"What?" Marcus whispered.

"Elena didn't want to be your mistress forever, and she certainly didn't want to share four billion dollars with a reckless, arrogant man who would eventually get bored of her too," Sarah explained, stepping slightly to the side. "We made a deal. She would convince you that getting rid of me was the only way to get the money. She knew you'd use the yacht. She knew you'd push me. And she made sure I was wearing the waterproof case—the one with a built-in GPS transmitter that was linked directly to her phone and the Coast Guard's emergency response team."

Marcus’s chest heaved. "You... you're lying. She loved me!"

"She loved your money," Sarah said. "She wanted you to take the fall for attempted murder. Under the terms of our marriage contract, if you are convicted of a felony against me, your shares are immediately forfeited... to me. And Elena? She gets a highly lucrative, permanent position as CEO of the restructured Mitchell Group, financed by my family's trust."

"No... no!" Marcus screamed, his face contorting with rage. "You're lying! I'll kill you!"

He lunged forward, raising the iron bar.

But before he could take a second step, the bedroom door was kicked entirely off its hinges.

A bright, blinding red laser sight painted Marcus’s chest.

"FEDS! DROP THE WEAPON! NOW!"

Detective Hayes and four tactical officers flooded the room, their weapons trained on Marcus.

Marcus froze, looking at the red dots on his chest, then back at Sarah. He realized, with a sudden, crushing weight, that he had been set up from the very beginning. He was never the predator. He was the prey.

He dropped the iron bar. It clattered uselessly to the floor.

As the officers tackled him to the ground, slamming his face into the carpet and pulling his arms behind his back, Marcus screamed, "You planned this! You both planned this!"

Sarah walked over to him, looking down at his defeated, pathetic form one last time.

"I didn't plan for you to try and kill me, Marcus," she said, her voice filled with absolute authority. "I just prepared for the fact that you would. There's a difference."

Epilogue: A New DawnThree months later.

The courtroom of the Western District of Washington was packed to capacity. The judge pounded the gavel, bringing an end to the most sensational trial in the state's history.

Marcus Mitchell was sentenced to consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole for attempted first-degree murder, kidnapping, and corporate fraud. Elena Vance, despite her cooperation, was sentenced to twelve years for conspiracy.

Outside the courthouse, the sun was shining warmly.

Sarah stood on the steps, surrounded by a swarm of reporters. She was no longer wearing maternity clothes. In her arms, wrapped in a soft pink blanket, was her beautiful, healthy baby girl.

"Mrs. Mitchell! What are your plans for the company?" a reporter shouted.

"The Mitchell Group is no more," Sarah announced clearly, looking into the cameras. "As of today, the company has been rebranded as the Mitchell-O'Brien Foundation, dedicated to supporting victims of domestic abuse and funding maritime rescue operations. My daughter and I are looking forward to a quiet, peaceful life."

She looked down at her baby, who opened her eyes and let out a tiny, soft yawn.

"We're going to build a new world," Sarah whispered to her. "One where we finally get to look at the stars... in peace."
