CHAP 3: THE SECRET PARTNER

Three days after the disastrous engagement party, I sat in my office on the top floor of the Romero Urban Design headquarters. The glass walls offered a panoramic view of the San Francisco skyline, but my mind was elsewhere.
Daniel had thrown himself into his work, refusing to take Charlotte's calls or answer the dozens of pleading emails from her father. He was hurt, but he was strong. Yet, I knew this wasn't over. A family like the Holloways didn't just disappear into the night after being publicly humiliated. They were desperate, and desperate people did desperate things.
A knock on my door interrupted my thoughts. My assistant, Sophia, stepped in, looking nervous.
"Ms. Romero, there's a gentleman here to see you. He doesn't have an appointment, but he says it's regarding the Holloway group's debt portfolio."
I narrowed my eyes. "Who is he?"
"He gave his name as Julian Vance."
My grip tightened on my pen. Julian Vance was the older brother of Marcus Vance, the venture capitalist who had been at the party. But unlike Marcus, who was a legitimate businessman, Julian was known in the darker corners of the financial world as a corporate raider—a man who bought up distressed debt to strip companies of their assets and leave them to rot.
"Send him in," I said.
Julian Vance walked in with the easy confidence of a apex predator. He was handsome in a sharp, dangerous way, wearing a bespoke gray suit that screamed wealth.
"Ms. Romero," he said, taking a seat opposite my desk without waiting for an invitation. "I must say, your performance at the Pacific Ember was legendary. The video is still circulating in certain private circles."
"I don't play games, Mr. Vance," I said coldly. "What do you want?"
"I want to buy the Holloway debt from you," Julian said, leaning forward. "All six million of it. I'll pay you eighty cents on the dollar, cash, by the end of the day."
I studied him. "Why would you want to buy the debt of a failing yacht company? Unless..."
"Unless I already own forty percent of their outstanding shares through a shell company," Julian smiled, a slow, predatory grin. "Richard Holloway is a fool. He let me buy into his company last year when he needed cash for Charlotte’s trust fund. If I get my hands on your debt portfolio, I can officially declare them insolvent, seize the remaining sixty percent, and take full control of the Sausalito marina. It's a prime piece of real estate, Isabelle. Perfect for one of your urban design developments."
He was offering me a partnership. A joint venture to completely crush the Holloways and build a multi-million-dollar luxury marina in their place. It was a perfect business move. It was clean, profitable, and served as the ultimate punishment.
But something felt off.
"How did you know I held the debt, Julian?" I asked softly. "That information was highly confidential, kept within the executive board of Vanguard Trust."
Julian’s smile didn't waver, but his eyes cooled. "I have my sources, Isabelle. In our world, information is the only currency that matters."
"I'll think about it," I said, standing up to signal the end of the meeting. "I'll let you know my decision by tomorrow."
"Don't wait too long," Julian said, rising from his chair. "Desperate people do foolish things. And right now, the Holloways are looking for a lifeline. It would be a shame if they found one before we could cut the cord."

After he left, I immediately called my head of security, Marcus. "Marcus, I need you to run a full background check on Julian Vance. And search for any connection between him and Charlotte Holloway."
A nagging feeling in my chest told me that the snobbish, entitled Charlotte wasn't just a spoiled girl who made a mistake. She was a pawn in a much bigger game.
