Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

Facebook Headline: THE BILLIONAIRE RETURNED HOME EARLY AND CALLED AN EMERGENCY GALA... THE TWIST AT THE END LEFT THE ELITES IN TEARS! 😱😭💎Sloane Prescott was having a wonderful Thursday morning.
She was sitting in the sunroom of the Whitaker mansion, reviewing the floral arrangements for her upcoming wedding, when Grant walked through the front doors.
"Grant, darling!" Sloane cried, throwing her arms around his neck as he entered the room. "You’re home early! I thought your flight wasn't until tonight."
Grant didn't hug her back. He let her kiss his cheek, his body completely rigid. "The conference wrapped up early. I missed home."
"Oh, I’m so glad," Sloane purred, completely oblivious to the ice in his eyes. "The house has been so quiet. Well... mostly quiet. I had to handle a small staffing issue while you were gone. One of the housekeepers was getting incredibly sloppy, bringing her unruly child into the house. I had to let her go. I knew you wouldn't want the estate compromised."
Grant stared at her, his face an unreadable mask. "Is that so? You handled it?"
"Of course," Sloane smiled smugly. "I always protect your interests, darling."
"Good," Grant said, stepping away from her. "Because I’ve decided to host an intimate dinner party tonight. Right here at the mansion. I want to celebrate our upcoming union with some of our closest friends. Call Victoria, call the board members of the hospital foundation. Tell everyone it’s mandatory."
Sloane’s eyes lit up with excitement. "Oh, a gala! A flash party! I love it. I’ll coordinate with the caterers immediately."
"Don't worry about the staff, Sloane," Grant said coldly as he walked toward his study. "Jonah and I will handle everything."
By 8:00 PM that evening, the grand foyer of the Whitaker mansion was filled with fifty of the most powerful, wealthy people in Chicago. Diamonds glittered under the massive crystal chandeliers. Men in tailored tuxedos chatted about the stock market while classical music drifted softly through the air.
Sloane stood at the center of the room in a stunning emerald-green gown, holding a glass of vintage champagne, soaking in the compliments.
"You look radiant, Sloane," Victoria said, leaning in. "By the way... did you ever find a replacement for that... you know, the housekeeper?"
Sloane laughed softly, waving her hand. "Oh, please. Good help is easy to find. I’ve already forgotten she ever existed."
Suddenly, the music stopped.
Grant Whitaker stepped onto the first landing of the grand staircase, a microphone in his hand. The crowd immediately fell silent, turning their attention to the billionaire host.
"Good evening, everyone," Grant said, his voice echoing through the microphone. "Thank you for coming on such short notice. Tonight was supposed to be a celebration of the future. But before we look forward, I think it’s incredibly important to look at the present. To look at what happens inside the walls of this home when the gates are closed."
Sloane smiled proudly, stepping closer to the stairs, waiting for him to announce their wedding date.
"A few days ago," Grant continued, his eyes locking onto Sloane with a terrifying intensity, "a challenge was issued in this very room. A wager of five thousand dollars was made to a three-year-old child. The wager was built on cruelty, designed to humiliate a mother who works herself to the bone to provide for her daughter."
A murmur of confusion and shock rippled through the crowd. Sloane’s smile froze. Her heart skipped a beat.
"The person who issued that challenge thought the child would fail," Grant said, his voice growing louder, trembling with suppressed rage. "But she didn't fail. She showed us what true genius, true dignity, and true strength look like. And tonight, I want to introduce you all to the real star of the Whitaker estate."

Grant turned his head toward the top of the stairs.
"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Miss Lily Brooks. And her mother, Maya."
