CHAPTER 1 – THE SLAP THAT DESTROYED AN EMPIRE

The slap echoed through the marble lobby so loudly that even the elevators seemed to stop.

Every head turned.

A young receptionist nearly dropped her coffee.

Two security guards froze in place.

And in the middle of the luxurious reception area of Grupo Armenta, Mariana Ríos slowly lifted her hand to her burning cheek.

A thin line of blood appeared on her lip.

She didn't cry.

She didn't scream.

She simply looked at the woman standing before her.

Pamela Solís.

Executive assistant.

Perfect makeup.

Expensive heels.

And a smile filled with hatred.

"How dare you come here looking for Mr. Diego?" Pamela shouted. "Women like you always show up sooner or later, hoping to trap a rich man!"

Several employees exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Nobody knew who Mariana was.

She wore a simple cream dress, flat shoes, and no jewelry except a silver ring hidden beneath her sleeve.

She looked ordinary.

Almost invisible.

Which was exactly why she had chosen that outfit.

Mariana tightened the green folder in her hands.

Inside were documents, bank transfers, contracts, and enough evidence to destroy several powerful people.

But nobody in the lobby knew that.

They only saw a woman who had just been humiliated.

"Security!" Pamela ordered. "Remove her immediately."

The guards approached.

One of them looked almost apologetic.

"Ma'am, please come with us."

Mariana remained still.

"Before you touch me," she said softly, "perhaps you should check who approved my entrance."

The guard hesitated.

He pulled out his tablet and scanned her visitor code.

Three seconds later, his face turned white.

He looked at Mariana.

Then at Pamela.

Then back at the screen.

"Ma'am…" he whispered. "There must be some mistake."

Pamela snatched the tablet from his hands.

The color drained from her face.

On the screen appeared:

Mariana Ríos de Armenta.

Executive Access.

Unlimited Clearance.

Silence filled the lobby.

Someone gasped.

Another employee whispered:

"De… de Armenta?"

Pamela's hands began trembling.

"No," she muttered. "Impossible."

Mariana met her eyes calmly.

"Is it impossible?"

The elevator doors suddenly opened.

A tall man stepped out wearing an expensive gray suit.

Héctor Armenta.

Chief Financial Officer.

Younger brother of the company's founder.

And Diego's uncle.

The moment he saw Mariana, his expression changed for a fraction of a second.

Fear.

Then it disappeared.

"What is going on here?" he demanded.

Pamela immediately ran to him.

"This woman is pretending to be Mrs. Armenta."

Héctor looked at Mariana from head to toe.

Then he smiled.

It was the smile of a man who had lied so often that deception had become second nature.

"I see," he said. "And what exactly do you want, young lady?"

Mariana's eyes narrowed.

He wasn't surprised to see her.

That meant only one thing.

He already knew she existed.

Interesting.

"I came to see my husband."

A murmur spread through the lobby.

Héctor folded his arms.

"Mr. Diego is in an important meeting."

"Then I can wait."

"Actually…" he said slowly, "I think it would be better if we talked privately."

Pamela's face relaxed.

She thought the problem had been solved.

Poor woman.

She had no idea she had just walked into a trap.

Minutes later, Mariana was escorted into a conference room without windows.

The door locked.

Pamela stood beside it.

Héctor sat across from Mariana.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Héctor smiled.

"So… Diego's secret wife."

Mariana raised an eyebrow.

"You admit it, then?"

"I admit nothing."

"Yet you know who I am."

The man's smile disappeared.

"You should never have come here."

"Why?"

"Because this company is not what you think."

Mariana slowly placed the green folder on the table.

"And what exactly do you think I believe?"

Héctor leaned forward.

"I think you believe you're here to save your husband's company."

"And?"

"And you're already too late."

The room suddenly felt colder.

Mariana's expression remained calm.

Inside, however, her pulse quickened.

She had suspected fraud.

But hearing his confidence made her realize the situation might be even worse.

Héctor opened a black folder.

Inside was a document.

He pushed it across the table.

"Sign it."

Mariana glanced at it.

A legal declaration.

She would renounce any rights as Diego's wife and promise never to interfere in company affairs.

She almost laughed.

The desperation practically leaked from the paper.

"And if I refuse?"

Pamela finally spoke.

"Then your life becomes very difficult."

Mariana looked at her.

"Is that a threat?"

"It's a promise."

Silence.

Then Mariana smiled.

For the first time since arriving.

And that smile made both of them uneasy.

"You seem very confident."

"We are."

She opened the green folder.

Pulled out three photographs.

And laid them on the table.

The color vanished from Pamela's face.

The first photograph showed her entering a bank in Querétaro.

The second showed her signing documents.

The third showed her standing beside a man wanted for financial crimes.

"No…" Pamela whispered.

Mariana slid another document forward.

"Eight shell companies."

Another paper.

"Twenty-seven fake invoices."

Another.

"Forty-eight million pesos missing."

Héctor's breathing changed.

"You've been busy," he said.

"I have."

The older man slowly stood up.

"What do you want?"

"I want the truth."

"And if you don't get it?"

Mariana checked the time.

11:40 a.m.

She looked back at him.

"At 12:05, a file containing all this information will automatically be sent to the Board of Directors, the company's external lawyers, and the prosecutor's office."

Pamela's face turned pale.

"You… you're bluffing."

Am I?

Mariana placed her phone on the table.

The countdown timer was clearly visible.

Twenty-five minutes.

Nobody spoke.

Twenty-four minutes and fifty-three seconds.

Héctor suddenly smiled.

Then he laughed.

To Mariana's surprise, Pamela also laughed.

"You still don't understand," he said.

"What don't I understand?"

He leaned closer.

"The money wasn't stolen from Diego."

Mariana frowned.

"It was stolen from someone much more dangerous."

The room went silent.

For the first time, uncertainty crossed her face.

Héctor smiled wider.

"You think you've uncovered a simple fraud."

He shook his head.

"You've just stepped into something far bigger."

Then Mariana's phone vibrated.

A message appeared on the screen.

It was from Diego.

Three words.

Leave. Right. Now.

A second message arrived immediately after.

They know you're there.

Mariana's blood ran cold.

Then the lights in the conference room suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

May you like

And somewhere in the hallway outside…

someone screamed.
