CHAPTER 5 – THE SECRET INSIDE THE VAULT

the color drained from Héctor Armenta's face.

"You… uploaded everything?" he whispered.

Mariana slipped her phone back into her purse.

"Every invoice. Every bank transfer. Every fake company. Every recording."

For the first time in years, the powerful CFO looked like an old man cornered by his own lies.

The police commander stepped forward.

"Mr. Héctor Armenta, I advise you not to move."

But Héctor suddenly laughed.

A strange, broken laugh.

"You still don't understand."

Diego frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

"The money."

Silence.

"The forty-eight million pesos."

He looked directly at Mariana.

"You think I stole it."

"You did."

"No."

Mariana narrowed her eyes.

Then why are you afraid?

Héctor's smile slowly returned.

"Because I know where it came from."

The corridor became quiet.

"The money wasn't company money."

Nobody spoke.

"It belonged to someone else."

The police commander folded her arms.

"Whose money?"

Héctor looked at Diego.

Then at Mariana.

And finally said:

"Your father's."

Diego's face turned white.

"My father died seven years ago."

"Exactly."

The old man smiled.

"Which is why this is so interesting."

A chill went through Mariana.

Something about his voice felt wrong.

Almost triumphant.

"You're lying," Diego said.

"Am I?"

Héctor slowly reached into his jacket.

Several officers aimed their weapons.

"Don't move!" the commander shouted.

But Héctor simply pulled out an old photograph.

He handed it to Diego.

The moment Diego saw it, he stopped breathing.

"What is it?" Mariana asked.

He couldn't answer.

She took the photograph.

Her hands trembled.

The picture showed a much younger Héctor standing beside Diego's father.

Between them stood a little girl.

About five years old.

Dark hair.

Big brown eyes.

And a tiny silver bracelet.

Mariana's heart nearly stopped.

Because she recognized the bracelet.

She still had it.

She had worn it since childhood.

"No…" she whispered.

The old man watched her carefully.

"Do you remember now?"

She looked at him.

"What is this?"

Héctor sighed.

"Your mother never told you, did she?"

Diego looked confused.

"Told her what?"

The old man smiled sadly.

"The truth."

The air seemed to disappear from the corridor.

Mariana couldn't breathe.

"What truth?"

Héctor's voice softened.

"You weren't brought into Diego's life by coincidence."

Silence.

"You were always part of this family."

Nobody moved.

Nobody even blinked.

"What?" Diego whispered.

The old man looked directly at Mariana.

"Your mother worked for my brother twenty-eight years ago."

Mariana's knees weakened.

"No."

"She disappeared suddenly."

"No…"

"And she took a child with her."

Tears filled Mariana's eyes.

"No!"

Héctor took one step closer.

"You."

The world seemed to stop.

Diego looked as though someone had punched him.

The commander herself looked shocked.

Mariana's voice barely came out.

"Why are you saying this?"

"Because it's true."

He pointed at the photograph.

"That little girl is you."

"No…"

"You are not an outsider, Mariana."

Silence.

"You are Diego's half-sister."

Everything shattered.

The photograph slipped from Mariana's hand.

It landed on the floor.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Even the police officers stood frozen.

Diego looked like he couldn't understand the words he had just heard.

His lips trembled.

"No," he said quietly.

"No."

Héctor closed his eyes.

"My brother had an affair."

Mariana felt dizzy.

"He tried to hide it."

"No…"

"Your mother fled because she was afraid."

Tears streamed down Mariana's face.

Her entire life…

Everything she knew…

Suddenly meant nothing.

The marriage.

The late-night conversations.

The strange connection she felt toward Diego.

The reason his father had left her an anonymous inheritance years ago.

It all made sense.

"No…" Diego whispered.

"This can't be true."

But deep inside…

he knew something was wrong.

Because his father had often sent money to an unknown woman.

A secret account.

One he had never understood.

Mariana suddenly remembered something.

A letter.

Her mother's old letter.

The one she had never opened.

It was still in her apartment.

Locked inside a wooden box.

Her legs gave out.

Diego caught her before she hit the floor.

For a moment, they simply stared at each other.

Two people who had secretly become husband and wife.

Two people who had slowly fallen in love.

And now…

they might share the same father.

Mariana pulled away.

Tears streamed down her face.

"No…" she whispered.

Héctor looked at them both.

"I'm sorry."

For the first time that night, he sounded sincere.

Then…

he smiled.

A terrible smile.

"But there is one more thing."

Everyone looked at him.

"The money."

Nobody spoke.

"The forty-eight million pesos wasn't stolen."

Mariana slowly lifted her head.

"What?"

"It was your inheritance."

Silence.

"My inheritance?"

"My brother created a trust fund in your name."

The corridor became completely still.

"He left it to the daughter he never publicly acknowledged."

Mariana stared at him.

"You're lying."

"I'm not."

Diego looked stunned.

"The money belonged to Mariana all along."

The commander frowned.

"Then why hide it?"

Héctor's expression changed.

"Because if she discovered the truth… everything my brother built would belong to her too."

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

"You tried to steal her inheritance?" Diego asked.

Héctor lowered his eyes.

"I protected what should have remained in this family."

Mariana slowly stood.

"I am family."

The old man looked at her.

Pain appeared in his eyes.

Then…

for the first time…

he nodded.

"Yes," he whispered.

"You are."

Suddenly, a voice echoed through the corridor.

"He's lying."

Everyone turned.

A woman stood at the end of the hallway.

Elegant.

Wearing a red dress.

And holding an old envelope in her hand.

Mariana's heart nearly stopped.

Because she knew that face.

Even after twenty years.

Even after believing she was dead.

"Mom…?"

The woman looked at her with tears in her eyes.

"Hello, sweetheart."

The envelope fell from Mariana's hands.

Because the woman she had buried in her memories…

the woman everyone said had died fifteen years ago…

had just walked back into her life.

And she looked directly at Héctor and said:

"You've lied long enough."

The old man's face turned ghostly white.

May you like

Because the only person who knew the real truth…

had finally returned.
